What does the coin slot do on the worm level?

I'm replaying this as a grimrock mod, and there's a coin slot before the shortcut sign, which my memory tells me it gives me a mostly useless chest. In this version I put a coin in and a teleporter field appeared but nothing happens when I step into it.

Could be a bug with the grimrock port, or I'm missing something. Strangely I've just read through 5 different walkthroughs and none of them mention it!

On consulting my hint book, it looks like that blue field serves as an anti-monster barrier, preventing them from following you. So it won't appear to do anything at all unless you pass through it with something chasing you :).

Yup, that's right. Pretty useless, IMHO, but it's good to know it's there (just like the National Museum).

Out of interest, do you know where the bit is I'm thinking of? There's a coin slot and I believe it opens a piece of wall that has a chest with some food in it...

The only place I can remember that fits this description in DM (a coin slot revealing a chest with food) is the "treasure room" at the end of the "Clockwise" level.

Yeah, on looking through my hint book again it does seem that the room you speak of at the end of Level Eleven is the only place where you use coins to get treasure - off the top of my head the only other place where you use coins is the Vault on Level Three. There's also the "vending machine" under the DDD in CSB.

Also in one of the riddle rooms, but there is no slot.... and near the amalgam on the bottom level.

Ah yes, the one on the bottom level only opens the door to the area with the Vi Altar, though - I don't recall there being any items in there. But I haven't been in there for a looong time so I could easily be misremembering ;). And the Riddle Room did come to mind but as you say, that doesn't involve an actual slot.

Another thing about the worm level... I always wondered why there were so many alcoves around. Does anybody know if they serve an actual purpose? I think I once tried putting an item on each of them, but couldn't tell if it did anything. Maybe they're there just for decoration and annoyance?

Yeah I think they're mostly just for decoration. The ones that have a use tend to be in more significant places (eg next to a closed door which has no button or keyhole) and/or have some kind of clue nearby (eg wall text or a scroll) hinting at what you should do.

That's in DM, anyway. Not so much in CSB, I don't think ;).

Going from memory, but they don't do anything.
First time I ever played it, I was doing the same thing at the start of that level thinking "they must be there for a reason".

But there is a reason!
Spoiler
To confuse the player.

Well... Since you put it like that, it could indeed be a reason.

LOL, same happened to me, and not only the first time I played. Whenever I replay DM after long time enought to loose memory about the details, reaching the worm level has me trying to interact with all those alcoves :D :D :D

On the worm level, there's just one similar secret - a gold key in one of the... ummm... drains in the wall. As far as I can remember, that's the only object in such a drain in the whole DM. I've only learned this a couple of years ago when I studied the maps on the internet, I would have never guessed it myself. Similarly, I think the worm level is the first DM level when you find these Chaos' faces on the walls - but, unlike in CSB, they have no meaning in DM... I think... I hope! :)

No, i'm pretty sure you're right about the faces.

Activating the force field via the coin slot does offer a training camp option. The ghost then provides controllable single-opponent non-toxic opposition, and can only be damaged by the one spell. Three purple worm generators within easy reach (two via the short cut), and an empty flask.

I did not wonder about the useless alcoves at the worm level.
However, I have been much puzzled about the demon face in the small room where one can rest from the worms behind a porticully.
That demon face at a specific place looks so much to mean something......I spent a lot of time investigating.
Now I think it is meaningless

Yeah, I don't recall any of the demon faces in DM meaning anything, other than that one in the looooong corridor on Level Eight that leads to the room with the Delta Blade - the face in itself doesn't do anything but you can at least knw you haven't yet reached the spinner on the floor when you get to it ;).
CSB, on the other hand, is a whole other matter ;).

Speaking about the "Daemon Faces" in Dungeon Master, I clearly recall some of them meaning "Pay Attention". For example, in the large room that is level 7, it is not unusual to see one of them near a button, a pressure plate or an item on the floor.
