Bloodwych HTML

Post by MadMunky »

This is still a long way off being anything near finished but I'm happy with the progress being made so thought id do a post about it.

The game is being coded by Wishbone and myself, though currently wishbone is doing a lot of the updates so progress is flying along.

We have most of the graphics now drawing, we still need to do items and the interface but that's pretty minor to what we had to do to get the player view working and monsters.

Its Wishbone and myself coding this in JavaScript using a HTML Canvas so it should work in most browsers once finished.

http://bloodwych.co.uk/bwhtml/

Anyways check it out, let me know what you think. We plan to add multiplayer support and get the original game recreated as much as we can as we don't have any kind of source code, once we have this working we will look into making a modern version (high res graphics etc...)

Nothing seems to be working, I tried using the keys specified in the instructions but couldn't get anything to move in the game.

Impressive! It's working fine for me in Chrome. I love that you've got the dual screen working, it's fun to see yourself pop up in the other view.

The FPS seems a bit low though: it's reporting only 10FPS when idle, and this is a brand new laptop I'm using. I guess you can optimise that though?

Thanks Gambit, its limited to 10fps at the moment, it will run at 60fps (max fps of the browser) but then monsters vibrate too fast, we are going to fix that logic then increase it back to 60fps

Looks good as well for me. I hope keyboard bindings can be changed in final version for non US/UK users :)

I'm using Windows 8.0 the browser is Firefox 28.0.

I've tried it with:
  • Chrome: it works perfectly
  • Safari: does not work at all, won't even load
  • Internet Explorer: same as safari, won't even load.
  • Firefox 28.0: game loads but won't accept any input

Doesn't work for me. Tried on IE9 but didn't expected it work. But also tried with Chrome, the game is loading, and once it reaches 100%, it seems to be stuck here for ages. Running under Windows Vista.

Under Opera 12, the games is loaded and starts, but can't do anything, no move, nothing.

Anyway good luck, sounds a great idea. I'll try it from other computers.

I am using Opera 12.17 and Vista. It seems to work OK.
I was able to walk around and open doors.

Sure I remember, the graphics are terrible, but the game is so good you don' t mind.
The magic system is well thought. spells allow worthwhile actions.
It takes a long time to complete this game, much more than DM.
It allows two players. Two players on the same computer/ screen is not attractive.
It allows two players each at his own computer. This was before neworking became common practice. That was nice for the time.
I did not use, I wonder wether the two player gameplay is enjoyable, I doubt it; Who knows ?
I enjoyed this game very much in solo mode.
Spoiler
You start selecting your champions in 4 flavors heart diamon spade club
You go deep and deeper to get the first key , to get access to a tower.
Zendick the villain has a basement, foor towers and a central tower.
After the basement, you play the four towers in any order, then the last one.
Beware of the white key on a white door sill....I got stuck for ages missing such a key.

Sounds weird  . So i gave another try. Same. Tried on another computer, runninng under Windows 7. With chrome, same probleme, stuck at 100% games don't start after loading. On iE11, got same problem until i noticed a blocked popup. I allowed it, refrehsed the page and it worked, i could play it. I guess the problem comes from the ads / popup blocker i use (on both computers ads block plus is installed on chrome).

Works like a charm since this blocked popup issue was fixed, including on my compter. Nice work. :D

I wonder if that's the issue in firefox? Has anyone else tried Safari to see if it's just my verions/computer or if it's with Safari in general?

I used the PC version of Safari, btw, I got the exact same issue as Kanda, so I think it's Safari and not the OS that's causing it.

On IE it doesn't even display a broken progress update, just a blank box, so I suspect those are different issues.

Which version of IE? I have IE 11 and it loads fine (as long as the popup blocker is not enabled), remember its using a HTML 5 Canvas so only really the later browsers will be supported.

I have 10.0.12.

The other browsers versions are:
Chrome: 34.0.1847.131
Firefox: 28.0
Safari: 5.1.7

EDIT: I tried updating firefox to 29.1 and still had the same problem as before. (I also hate the new UI and will be going back to version 28 for now)

Hi Gambit,

It is all just 2D images pasted on a canvas so we should be able to do any resolution as long as there's enough memory to store the images

Plan is to get this working then do an Enhanced version, if your interested in doing any 2d graphics let us know :)
