CSB from the UDM page doesn't work

Post by isamu »

I downloaded the Amiga version of CSB from the "Unofficial Dundeon Master Web Site" but I have a feeling the CSB roms are bad. Because when I select the csb game file to be placed in either of the dfo drives, that's when WinUAE crashes. Can anybody tell me where I can get another copy of CSB to see if it is indeed the rom?

Getting CSB to work, here's how:

Post by Gambit37 »

The CSB files are fine - I'm using them myself. It's your WinUAE settings that you need to check.

These are my settings:

RAM: Chip 2mb, Fast 2mb, Slow 512K
ROM: Kickstart 1.3 or 3 work fine (Have you got the ROMs?)
CPU: 68000, fastest possible
Display: 320, 240, Lores, fullscreen, linemode=normal, centering=horizontal+vertical, Chipset=OCS (Important!) refresh=every frame
Game IO Ports: leave as default
Misc: leave as default, if you have DirectX make sure it's checked
Sound: Emaulated 100%, Waveoutlooping, 22K 16bit
Floppies: df0: is the CSBGAME.adz, df1: is the save game ADF

You also need to make sure that you have the file called GZIP.EXE somewhere in your system path, normally c<!--EZCODE EMOTICON START :\ --><img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... ohwell.gif ALT=":\"><!--EZCODE EMOTICON END--> windows\command. If you want to use DMS compressed Amiga files, you also need the XDMS.EXE in your path. You can find these files on the net, just do a search. Hope that helps

CSB and WinZip

Post by isamu »

Gambit-according to some gzip docs I read, it essentially does the same thing WinZip does. In fact it literally states-"Winzip includes the gzip compression code and can decompress .gz and tar.gz files". I've been using WinZip to decrompress and unzip all my files so far. In fact, CSB *was* unzipped/decompressed with WinZip as well as the DM and csb save game files from Daniel's site. Just that DM and the csb save game both work, and CBS doesn't. That is why I speculate it could be a bad rom. Does CSB itself *specifically* need gzip (and NOT WinZip) to be unzipped properly? If WinZip already contains the gzip compression code then it should be capable of decompressing all gzip files right?

As far as the settings for WinUAE, I set it up exactly the way you outlined with the same result. However, since it's been running DM under ALL KINDS of different settings so far, I don't think it matters in this particular case. Here's why- in the floppies section, when I select a df drive it does show the CSB icon in its unzipped/decompressed state. It's called "csbgame". And the other one is called "csbutil". As soon as I select one of them and attempt to put it in one of the df drives, thats when it crashes. I doubt the settings in WinUAE would take effect or cause it to crash until you actually press O.K. and start the emulator, and not while you're still in "settings" mode and trying to put a file into a floppy drive. Thanks for the suggestions though. Get back to me on the WinZip/Gzip issue and if I stand corrected on anything please let me know :)

GAMBIT 4 PRESIDENT!!!:)

Post by isamu »

Gamblt-Thanksgivng will be coming up soon. And you are free to come over and have some turkey! Because you are simply THE MAN! You can disregard my last post. At first I thought you were crazy because I did indeed download gzip and nothing happend with csb. So continued to insist that it was a bogus rom on Daniel's site. But when I downloaded another rom, Lotus Esprit Turbo Challenge, WinUAE did the same damn thing and crashed when I selected it in df0. That's when I went back and reread your post, and noticed you *specifically* said to download and extract it into c/windows/commands. So I went back to WinUAE and tried it again and..BINGO!! It loaded! I had a smile on my face from ear to ear! Thanks alot Gambit. I really do appreciate it buddy! Oh and one more thing. I gotta problem with DMute. Check out my other post! I'll let you respond there.

BTW. When will your new DM site be ready?

Thanks for the offer - but sadly I'm in England so the turkey will have to wait...

I'm glad you managed to get CSB to work - the GZIP thing can be a bit a confusing, so well done for sorting it out. I just finished CSB again last night, but was disappointed that I didn't get the end sequence. I think it's because it's a cracked version. It's sad too because I still have my Amiga, and the original CSB disks, but because the games are protected, I can't make them into ADFs. :( I have managed to get all my old save games off the Amiga, and even some of the portraits that I had drawn for CSB! Takes me back.. aaahhh.

My DM site? Well, it's still only in the planning stages at the moment. It will take a few months probably. However, believe me it will be worth the wait!
