Bug in the Amiga version?

Post by Slick »

My IIGS is unavailable right now due to school, and will probably be unavalable until spring break, but anyways, I thought I'd try the Amiga version using MacUAE to see if it's any different. Anyways, I had just proceeded to level 8 (The Void) when a giggler stole one of my flasks. While chasing it, it ran over a spot with a switchplate which closes a pit, and when I stepped on it, it opened the pit underneath the giggler (YES!). Upon jumping down the pit to retrieve my flask, I discovered a nice surprise. Not only was my flask at the bottom of the pit, but also duplicates of the contents of one of my chests. This has never to my knowledge happened in the IIGS version, but has this ever happened to anybody else?

I'm using the Amiga version available from this web site.

There are two versions of DM Amiga on the site: 2.0 and 3.6.

While writing Chaos Strikes Back for Windows I came across
a bug that duplicated the contents of a chest. under rather rare
circumstances. I don't remember the details. But I believe that
it did cause things to go progressively worse because there weren't
really two of everything. There was a single object with two pointers.

Here is what I wrote at the time.......

==================

I was able to reproduce the crash you suffered while
playing with CSBwin version 3.0. At least that
worked properly. Unfortunately, I had to debug the
hex which is not fun.

It was in the area of allocating new objects. The
list of empty objects was empty and the function's
return value was not captured correctly. It was fixed
several versions ago. The problem happened when
you killed a giggler and we had to allocate a 'cloud'
object ( the little black coud that shows up when a
monster is killed ).

So should I leave the "duplicate" contents where they are and only retrieve my flask? I never encountered this bug in the IIGS version. I was playing version 3.6 of the Amiga DM.

I encountered this bug on the Amiga several times, although it wasn't always within chests. Other objects could be 'cloned' under certain circumstances. I have also seen the problem in the giggler maze on the emulated IIGS version (flasks carried by one giggler were cloned when dropped), so it's definitely something that's been around for a while....

I think it happens when the object count gets too large for the database despite the checks to stop this, and an item is created
that is referenced in a chest or monster, since they don't have any actual anchors in the dungeon

And yeah, I rememeber I got a flask on level 11 in the amiga days cloned that was carried by a giggler, and it took me so long to work out what was crashing my game.
Was unable to (permenantly) kill off ian_scho (Haynuus), Ameena, oh_brother (Westian), money (Falkor), raixel (Petal) and Lord_Bones (Aurek) in the DM D&D game Time's Champions!

CONGRATULATIONS TO THOSE WHO MADE THE GAME WHAT IT WAS - GREAT!
