I made some searches in newsgroups using google (http://groups.google.com).
There are lots of Dungeon Master related messages! I have found these two interesting threads about our CSB scroll:

Hmm. Thank you for digging those out Christophe, but they're not very informative - only the same talk about a red herring without sense we already heard here. I'm not convinced (yet ;))

Is anyone else?

Is there perhaps a clue if you save the game on the same square as the scroll, then load up the CSB hint oracle thingy?

Just tried it. Unfortunately not. Good thought but I guess that probably someone did this already.

I forgot to post some of the info I found:

The guy (Bob Retelle) who explains that the scroll is a red herring knows people at FTL:

He he, I've just spent the best part of the last hour reading google groups to see all that stuff too! Some very interesting reading there.

It sounds like the Hint Disk became the Hint Oracle for CSB. I certainly haven't seen any information anywhere about any such disk for Dungeon Master. I'll see what else I can find out.

I know this is going off topic somewhat, but I checked my DM archive and realised that I have a copy of Bob Retelle's DM hintbook. It's called "The Lost Scrolls of Mount Anaias". Made in 1988, It's A5, about 100 pages and is a pretty good read (although it has some really dodgy pixel-painted illustrations). Based on what Bob said, it looks like it was re-issued around 1992 for the PC release of DM and renamed "The Dungeon Master Scrolls". I'll include information about it on my site.

I sent him an email, I'm waiting for the answer. I'll keep you informed.
I think we should open a new thread :)

Should we? Well, I imagine this thread is a nuisance for "narrowband" users, but on tghe other hands, it's the longest thread ever posted here, and I'm curious how long it will be one day.

I say keep it all in one thread, then it is all in one place, it shouldn't take that long even for 56k users, I'm sure they can find something to do for 10 seconds!

I'm facinated to know what this scroll is, even if it is a red herring and means nothing, what was it originally intended to do?

Keep the thread. So much time and thought in here, so people can spend a bit time for the download as well I think.

Regarding "aquantana"...

I can't remember when I read it, but it was something definitely on one of the DM sites/books, but "aquant" meant "water demon".

I've still standing by the red herring theory though, but thought I'd chuck that one out there.

Maybe the approach trying the "6 letter words" and shuffling that might help.

I'm still thinking there might be some letter replacement that will work, but is it possible that the two "qu"s in the scroll could represent only one letter?

Re: Quest for the Holy Scroll

Everything is possible. The question is, are there people willing to actively try and break this code or not? Because I don't believe, that a single person is gonna do it judging from the time and efforts known so far.

Everyone is expecting the scroll to be written in code, but what if the scroll was just in a fictional language where word lengths (even sentence structure) had no meaning or relevance... You could be analising it for years and not get anywhere...
This idea of " "aquant" meant "water demon". " is interesting.

Everything is possible. But this approach want get us any farther unfortunately. I still think that those "non-words" sound too close to real words to be made by chance or by a computer. Therefore I hope it has a meaning.

But it seems the interest has considerably lessened on the subject, so maybe we'll let it sleep for another half year or so until someone can provide fresh ideas... I concede I have no useful ones at the moment.
