No and no
The 'manhole' as zokathra called it isn't, it's just a fixing point for something... you might the item in the area you get the star...it's actually staring you in the face

Aha! I have it! Finally figured out what I needed to get to make that puzzle work. I guess there's truth to the old saying "out of sight, out of mind" as I'd completely forgotten about it until randomly doing things that reminded me of it's existance!
However I tried getting the Crystal Blade again and although I'm trying to repeat what I did the last time, I keep dying! It's very confusing as I did it before...

Which part specifically (use tiny font if you want)

The first time I got it, I was wearing the cross, but died whenever I touched the altar. When I clicked on the cross and it vanished, I was then able to pick up the crystal blade.
I can't think what is different this time through playing than the first time I played.

That's because the cross is not the right item to have - if you check the philosophical debate raging with Gmabit at one point, hopefully you will get what the right answer was. The cross itself has a description of being 'expensive and gaudy' or somehting, hopefulyl indicating it isn't really an item of true faith
If you wear the cross, the right answer will never be accepted

Ah, I got it. At least I think I figured out what I needed to do to get it, or I just got lucky!

I'm still stuck in the 'Desire Rised' part, after reading this thread.
I saw a small switch which opened the hole above the text.
I tried pushing the wall above below and all over the text but no joy.
I went upstairs and threw shouted and screamed over the pit but still no fun.
Cant find any item that has a relation to 'desire'.
I even had the 'stroke of genious' and cast a meaning less spell DES IR (wavey equals - star, is it not?) around the area but... No.
Can anyone just slap me on the forehead with the answer?
Thanks!

Des is the o_ shaped rune (the DESolate void of the DESert, and so on) and Ir is the curly E shaped rune (the arc of a wing as it flies through the aIR, like.)
By the way - the wavy lines are Vi, element of water.

Hi all, still dont have a solution to the Vi altar... Everyone's tried bones, I tried flasks of water too, as VI is the water symbol in this dungeon.... But still no joy.
The gold key thing is annoying me too. I poked and prodded the eye-banners, with the magnifying glass too, but no fun. I have lockpicks but no joy there. Can I burn them or something?
Think I did everything I could with the flying eye section - I have a talisman now.
Anyways.... Heeeelp

Really, try and persevere, it's a great little adventure, though maybe I'm biased as I played and loved the original Shadowgate. It also demonstrates really well the new capabilities of the engine.

Agreed!
By the way, bones aren't the only previously-living things to be found in the game...

I think the answers to zokathra should give you enough hints to get it....I htink anything more would be out and out tell you!
The only other hint is that you should have found what you need in the room wit hthe table, two handle holders, and the two cell doors

damn, I replaced the darkportal.rtc file with the new one and now RTC doesnt pick it up, and I think I just figured out (without reading the hints) how to solve the dssire puzzle. Doh!
Ah well, will try downloading again.

How does the scorpion kill you?
Is there some way to protect yourself from that?

I think someone already said this, but what doesn't kill you will make you stronger...

Yeah, I think enough hints are littered about this thread if anyone else has a problem with it

thanks for the tips, i have now to find it, the item who makes me stronger.
maybe it's the special scroll ?

Hmmm.... you need to think laterally. What have you found or discovered that makes you weaker?
