Falkor looked around the room, the carnage that had taken place saddened him. In his past he recalled the times he and his dwarven friends had searched great tombs only to see the disregard for the dead by grave robbers - and here likewise it seemed the same had happened. What did strike him as strange thought was the empty sarcophagi - he had never known anyone steel the bodies! Still, while Ameena was leading he took the time to pickup some of the bandages and store them away - if anyone got hurt they could perhaps help.

Next Falkor turned to the torch sconces.. there were 4 that he could see and perhaps more further along however he had a feeling that they could be usefull. He wasn't sure why but something told him that by putting the torches into them that they may trigger something that could reveal some usefull equiptment - or a way to continue! He started to examine them - looking for any traps/triggers.

While he did this one thing that continued to strike him as odd - how did the trolls get any further? Had the blocked corridor happened as they escaped? There was a lot of banging earlier - perhaps this had caused the wall to crumble. If the way forward required inteligence he was sure the trolins wouldn't have been able to progress!

OOC - Aaw, crap, my dice are downstairs in my bag - I'll have to use an online dice-rolling thing for this one :P.
Oh, and le

BIC - Since it seems everyone is ready to descend the stairs, Ameena cautiously moves so that she's a few steps ahead of Haynuus and Westian, who walk side by side, while Falkor follows closely behind.
Ears and nose alert for anything ahead that might pose a threat, Ameena almost reluctantly descends the stairs. When the group reaches the bottom, she looks around at all she can see. Strange, tall containers line the walls, and there is another, more ornate container standing in what appears to be the centre of the room, though Ameena can't quite tell because beyond this container, the room stretches beyond her field of vision. She has been able to detect a rather strong, strange, unpleasant sort of smell since descending the stairs, a smell she faintly recognises.
She notices the clubs scattered around the floor and realises that there must have been a lot more of those troll-creatures. But have they dissipated into strange grey smoke like the two upstairs did, or have they simply run away, leaving their clubs behind for some reason? And what of the one remaining troll-creature they'd met upstairs, who'd run? Since she can't see or hear any sign of the creature from where she is, perhaps that means there's a way out of this room further back. Or that the troll-creature has simply dissipated unexpectedly, as the other did.
She is aware of movement behind her - the others must be looking around too, but no-one speaks. She creeps forward carefully to sniff at one of the strange piles of bandages on the floor. She remembers one of the troll-creatures speaking of some kind of creatures...what did he say? That they were made of scraps? Scraps of cloth, then?
Nervously she sniffs at one of the piles, but doesn't touch it - it could be poisoned, or cursed, or all manner of nasty things...

OOC - Perception roll for sniffing the bandages and general awareness of the area (she's on full alert, this place is creepy)...d20 gives me...oooh 17 :D. Think that makes 23 overall. Gotta go out in a min though, not really time to check.

Wishing Ameena would look behind her Westian increases the frequency of his hand gestures, but to no avail. Looking at the other two he nods in the direction of the wall, and starts to move - when he gets into Ameena's field of vision he will try to get her attention.

In parallel with Westian, the half-orc moves a few steps closer to Ameena.

"Contact." he whispers to her, indicating with a knarled finger that there is something in the darkness. Next with two fingers pointing to his own eyes, then to the darkness, he indicates that she can continue her searching while he maintains vigil on the unknown entity.

He then returns to a respectful distance from our furry rogue.

Falkor notes, as they descended the stairs, that something was wrong. There was an odd weight to his movements. Perhaps the rest were putting it off as nerves, or too focused. However, Falkor recognised the feeling - the stairs were not level. If was a strange illusion, but he realised the stairs were actually on an angle themselves, and his brain was therefore at odds with his steps and sense of balance. Would this subtle incline mean anything? More importantly, Falkor ensured he kept a mental mapping of the depth they descended, and the amount they walked forward. Especially to track back to area below the fountain later, such small calculations were invariably important and overlooked by other dungeon delvers.

Nice idea on the bandages Falkor. Note them down, they are old and discoloured, but you can find some not afflicted by the ash and dirt. It will be up to your conscience if you wish to use them if the need arises, but they will certainly give the same bonus as a standard 'healing kit', which is +2 to Heal checks.

Falkor also spotted something unusual as he wandered about the Trolins and their entrance. There were many broken clubs around the blocked wall, yet nowhere else he could see. The Triolins had mentioned being chased. Was it possible they had actually casued the blockage to the tunnel closeby? If so, were they aware of what they were blocking themselves in with?

Ameena checked the piles too, letting her nose be her guide. The odd smell of death and age was strong on these bandages. She was almost certain the strong smell she had detected earlier that had faded had been similar. Did that mean something alive had been close to the stairs, and had moved away. Where had it moved to?

Smelling the bandages carefully, there are many things she cannot smell. For one, the smell of mana. These creatures were not magical. Or perhaps so old any magic smell had faded long ago. For another, she could smell no disease. It did not mean there was not any, but many still unremembered companions had often remarked about a 'rat's ability to sense such a thing.

Ameena also found something odd, close to the stairs. It was a small bent button beside a club. Looking around, Ameena could see the bandages and clubs were strewn in many places, but there were certainly concentrations where she would be worried about standing. It would be easy to get entangled in the 'scraps' or slip on a club.

Sadly, this fact was about to be discovered by the two fighters of the group. They did not have to move far, certainly they did not need to let the creeping aura of the torchlight get anywhere close to the shape to see it better. Westian could resolve the shape in the dark as a figure. In the dark the criss cross of lines almost camoflaged it, but his mind was set on recognising the pattern of a mummy and he could spot it now.

Haynuus too found it odd that in the darkness beyond what his natural eyesight could 'see', the creature certainly took shape. The odd flapping bandage and shape can into view looming. The white and black of the humanoid creature almost broke its pattern up, but his eyesight was too good. The thing was pawing at what Haynuus could now see was some form of wooden door. An odd star-burst shaped lock was to the left.

The next few actions happened so fast that it was hard to know what happened first. Haynuus was focused on the shape of the creature, and Westian was distracted looking to see what Ameena had been doing. Both looked to the other quickly to see what the sdource of the noise was, both then stumbled (perhaps again) with their footing and further clubs were knocked.

The two fighters looked quickly to the humanoid at the end of the hall. Sure enough, it stiffened, and slowly turned. It made an oddly theatrical movement back as it apparently spotted the light in the chamber, and the creatures bearing the source standing beyond the tomb.

"NGAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!"

The thing bellowed a scream, lifting it's arms wide and opening a gaping maw in the centre of its bandages.

Yikes! Yeah, bad stealth checks in a cluttered room with a critter around are never a good thing! I'm not going to ask you to roll initiative yet, because I'm going to allow you to do a quick round up of where you are first and also allow you a bit of tactical movement and discussion first.

However, the next post I'll probably add a 5 foot square tactical map of the hall, and I'll probably need a d20 initiative roll then.

Our half-orc had never seen nor imagined a mummy before. Although completely ignorant of reanimating the dead, he didn't need to be prodded into action. He instinctively knew that the thing was not natural, nor would it reason, and attempting to scare it with his muscles would be as useless as flogging a dead horse.

Now those of you who've attended archeological college would be aware of two schools of thought for when dealing with newly disturbed mummies. The first would be one of jumping around tombs with weapons and feinting heroins and with a show of bravado defeat the abomination by falling masonry or pushing over a statue. The second and most common idea in university circles is to wave a torch in it's face until it catches fire and then pop upstairs a couple of hours for a cigarette and a fantastic Egyptian coffee. Alas, Haynuus was never schooled and all he could think of was be sure that he was the first between it and them. The question was did a club do more damage than a torch, or a punch in the embalmed pancreas.

OOC - Nothing around to throw in it's face is there?

Tactical map:
http://dmweb.free.fr/Stuff/images/partymapmummy1.jpg

Piles of ash and bandages at D1, D8, E5, F8, and F10 should not provide a problem on normal movement (you can just stand on them), though complex movement might require an acrobatics checkl (risk of tripping if running or charging, etc).

Combined bandages and clubs at C4, F2, E3, and C11 are trickier, if you stand on them you might step on a concealed club and slip. You must spend an extra square of movement to move through them, can't charge/run through them, and a standard action may require an acrobatics check.

All the clubs on their own are fine, and you can pick them up. The three clubs at B1/B2 are broken and useless.

The tomb covering squares D6-E7 still allows people to stand in the squares it occupies. An athletics check would be needed to hope ontop of it, and Falkor/Ameena would require a run up first. You could alternatively scramble on it using a movement action.

Note the three light zones. The first is the main torchlight in which everyone can see well in. The second is the dim torchlight that Falkor and Ameena have trouble seeing things in, but can still make them out, and where Westian has no problems. The third light zone is the dim region for Westian. Falkor and Ameena cannot see in this (so cannot actually see the mummy yet nor the door!) Haynuus uses his darksight to see into this zone, so he can make everything out clearly, although it is in black and white.

OOC - When you say "button", do you mean the kind of button found on an item of clothing, or a pushable button on a wall? You said it was "bent", so I'm guessing the former. One random, bent button lying on the floor...?

BIC - Ameena listens to the others as she sniffs around their feet. When Haynuus gets her attention, she notes the direction he points (after having stood upright and craned her neck to see) and swivels one ear to keep note of it before continuing to sniff around. She doesn't get far before Haynuus and Westian, with their clumsy large feet, move around and cause some noise by knocking against the clubs on the floor. Then an awful scream emanates from the far end of the room, startling her. Would things in this awful place ever stop making sudden loud noises like that?
She looks about nervously, wondering what's going on. She remembers where she knows the smell from, now - from the odd occasion in the past when she's been near places where other races bury their dead. Sometimes they put them in strange, small stone rooms which smell like what she can smell in this room. The smell of death, then? No. The smell of death trapped within stone - death outside in the open smells very, very bad, but only till the bones are picked clean and there's no flesh left to bear the scent.
What, then, is it that just made the horrible screaming noise? She has heard mentions of dead creatures that walk, but surely, if something is dead, does it still have a voice? Can it hear? Can it see? Think? She has no idea. She doesn't particularly want to find out. Whatever it is that's across the room at the moment doesn't sound very happy, and from the way the scream sounded, it sounded like it was screaming in their direction.
She looks about for somewhere to hide, but this room isn't very wide - to get into shadow she'd have to move toward whatever it is that made the noise, adn she doesn't want to do that. Instead, she darts off to one side and stands by the wall, ready to spring away if anything nasty comes toward her.

OOC - Ameena moves over to G2. Hopefully the mummy won't come for her, and then maybe she can sneak behind the central sarcophagus and try to stab it in the back while it's going for Haynuus, or something. I'd've had her try to Hide, but there's nothing to hide behind/in. Damn these small rooms and brigth torches ;).

Seeing Haynuus about to throw his club towards the Mummy, Westian realises that is a great idea. This half-orc must be more intelliegent than he had realised - clubs could be used as a long range weapon also, especially when surrounded by so many replacements. He takes aim at the centre of the Mummy's chest and flings his club with all his might.

Seeing another club on the floor in front of him he prepared to hurl the one in his hand into the mummy's chest. It was almost instinctive as he used to do this against the backs of escaping goblins when he worked as a haulage master and back then the club would knock the little buggers off their feet. He'd learnt to throw the club in an arc yet not like a torpedo but it would have to be rolling in the air. Not only did it look better but it seemed to be more stable as it travelled through the air and more often found it's target. Yet after all this he was unsure that he could actually throw it that far across the room!

As Westian did the same, he hurled the club at the mummy (1d20=15). Next he would pick up the club in front of him on the floor.

Falkor could hear the noise, and noticed the others jump into action - but alas, he could see nothing ahead of him - just darkness. Not to be kept out of the action he readied his knife in case of attack and cautiously made his way forwards...

Westian and Haynuus could see the creature, and both threw with their might. Westian's muscle control was impressive, and the club snapped from his hands. Haynuus's brute strength and club technique was equally impressive.

Neither would be able to tell which club went wide, and which club almost made the target, though they had their own opinions. Sadly, Westian had been correct in his worry - the hall was long, and the clubs ended their trajectory with a fraction of the distance to go.

However, the fact that the two armed fighters had almost struck the mummy with thrown weapons seemed to give the creature pause. The tabgled mass of bandages moved with disturbingly silent steps across the floor. It sidled sideways, keeping away from the torchlight. Perhaps for now it assumed its bellows had drawn the fire. Perhaps, for now, it was under the delusion that it was still invisible.

Sadly, to both Falkor and Ameena this was still a reality, although Ameena's nose did twitch at a faint scent of it.

Ok, there are a few questions to Falkor to firm up his movement and previous actions, but otherwise that's it! You are now in combat with the mummy! Ameena, Falkor and Westian get to act ahead of the mummy, Haynuus acts afterwards.

You should all post your actions, just Haynuus should be aware that the mummy might start acting to spoil your best laid plans :) Ian, you should definitely post some contingencies in the OOC thread if you rely on the mummy doing a certain thing.

Ameena keeps her ears firmly fixed on the whatever-it-is that's down at the far end of the room. She still can't see it, but she knows it's there. The faintest rustle of cloth, the faint whiff of death-in-stone. But no sound of breath that she can detect. Even the most silent of predatory hunters must still breathe, yet from this creature, if creature it is, she detects nothing. She sees the two clubs go whizzing through the air as Westian and Haynuus both let loose, but the clunk of wood on stone tells her that both have missed their target. She rather hopes that the half-elf and half-orc aren't simply attacking without provocation. Picking a fight with a chance-encountered creature might not be a good idea, especially if it turns out to be something that may not have been hostile.
She slips back toward the bottom of the stairs, near the bandage pile she was sniffing before. She again spots the strange metal button and on impulse picks it up and shoves it into a pouch.
Then she steps closer to the two tall figures, nose twitching nervously.
"What is it?" she whispers, referring to the still-unseen creature. She has to whisper quite loudly, by her standards, remembering that the hearing of these two is most likely not quite as acute as her own. Even so, her whisper can barely be heard in the almost-silent chamber.

OOC - Ameena's now in square E1, sort of leaning forward with her nose between Haynuus and Westian.

Ameena will sort of spot the mummy now because of zeroing in on its odour. However, it is still a little fuzzy to tell details due to the dull light. Remember to note the button on your sheet! Oh, and I forgot to say, have fun in Canterbury.

Haynuus assayed the thing in distant view. Hmmm, speed maybe 20 feet? Looks like it wields no weapons but those long arms look menacing and will possess an unholy strengh. With all of that soiled toilet paper wrapped around it the thing looks positively ignitable so a torch maybe better than a dagger or claw. It's still too far to see it clearly though, and when it comes into view properly it will be a dreadful sight indeed. It may well have a few more surprises up it's wrapped linen sleeve.

Two posabilites then:
* If the mommy moves but not very far Haynuus could move to D4 with an intention to throw his club and pick up another. OOC - I assume he could only move 5 feet and do that in one round? At least he'd be closer to it than our brave halfling!
* If the mommy doesn't move at all Haynuus will set fire to the pile of ash and linen at E3 with his torch, creating a potential hazard for the mommy.
* If the thing moves within pouncing range a simple charge with the club would suffice. Why complicate Haynuus's life? OOC - My ignorance of the mechanics may show here

Falkor felt comfortable in his position, he could now see the outline of the monster - but did not wish to move further, the others could take charge now.... While they did this he tried to fire a flare in the direction of the monster - not to harm, but more to shock... and perhaps buy the others a few moments more to wield their weapons..

Now that the mummy was in clear view Westian felt an odd mixture of emotions. First there was the shock that this truly was one of the most evil creatures known, a creature that until now had been safely confined to books and late night stories. True fear ran through his body with a shudder. But after this initial reaction anger burst to the surface. Anger that this abomination was walking, an insult to all the High Lords. And also anger that this creature had created fear in Westian's soul - as a priest he was the one who should be in charge of this situation. The mummy should feel the reckoning of the gods themselves bearing down on him, and he should know the fury of righteousness.
This anger gripped Westian now. He was not going to run and throw weapons from a distance, he was going to stand and do everything in his power to channel the judgement of the High Lords, however an imperfect and unprepared vessel he may be. He reached back and grabbed some nearby bandages, and tied them around his club. “Haynuus, light this and anything else you can find. Then we obliterate this monstrosity”.

While Ameena and Westian busied themselves at the back of the hall with their various tasks, Falkor's light had already reveal the creature to the room. Now Falkor finished the job, successfully focusing his will in the general vicinity of the creature. A flash of white highlighted its twisted features to all, recesses in broken bandages revealing a gaping maw and black holes for eyes. There was a brief twinkle of something around its head as the flare died down.

The mummy did flinch at the burst of light, but did not scream defiance nor back away. Instead it sidled towards the wall, swallowed whole by the shadows to those who could not penetrate the gloom.

Falkor's torch and follow up flare is making the thing cautious for now. Ameena and Falkor will not be able to see the creature for now, although you know the square it disappeared into.

Ian, I'm assuming because of the movement away from Falkor and Westian's yell, this will trigger Haynuus's 'light E1' plan.

"Haynuus, light this and anything else you can find. Then we obliterate this monstrosity."

Westian's words led to an action in the half-orc, and the pile of rags close by lit up easily to the offered torch. Once again, it almost seemed as if the flame on the torch leapt eagerly to the pile before the torch even touched its target.

The rags created more illumination in the hall, although the smoke was almost instantly in Ameena's nostrils. The crackle of the flames showed strong defiance to the monstrosity that still roamed this hall.

However, over the fire's noise, was it imagination that added a discordant note? Was there a low, rumbling laughter on the edge of hearing?

Ok, so you seem to have started well here. Keep it up! Map will be up shortly, after all my careful updating of the map ahead of time today, this new light source will take a few moments to add!

Ok, the rags on E3 are now on fire! The smoke from them, like people, only provides 'soft' concealment. Anyone landing on them or passing through them will take 1d6 fire damage, and might catch fire unless they make a reflexes check.

The pile is not so large by any means that you get any penalties from standing close to it.

Though no-one responds to Ameena's quiet question, it is soon answered anyway by the sudden flash of light which reveals what it is they're facing. Having not taken her eyes from the faint figure she can see in the shadows, Ameena clearly sees the creature during the brief moments it's fully illuminated.
She doesn't recognise what it is, and is actually slightly confused. It certainly seems that the troll-creatures' descriptions of this creature were accurate - it does indeed seem to be a tall (to a murafu, like most things), humanish-shaped creature wrapped in strips of dirty-white cloth. The black holes that are where its eyes should be send a slight shiver down Ameena's spine, and suddenly she knows that whatever this thing is, it has no feelings, no emotions, maybe even no thoughts. She was right - it isn't alive. It is something dead, walking around, animated by some kind of magic. Which means that its strength, its powers, are currently unknown, at least to her.
Glancing around, she wonders whether the others know more about this...this "creature" than she does. Certainly from Westian's current demeanour, he seems to be taking this thing's existence almost as a personal insult.
But if it's not quite alive, and not quite dead, does that mean, then, that it doesn't feel pain, either? If they end up actually fighting it (as the others seem intent on doing), how can they hurt it? Will the fire burn it away? What lies underneath the strips of cloth that bind it together? Somehow, remembering the blackness of its no-eyes, Ameena isn't entirely sure she wants to know.
But the creature sems to be trying to hide from them at the moment. Maybe it does have some kind of thought processes. Or maybe it can't actually see them, since it has no eyes (at least, she thinks it doesn't), and it's only coincidence that it sems to be trying to stay in the shadows.

Westian finally appeared like the human clerics he'd met before. They would throw insults and metaphorical stones at you and say that you were an abomination. Tell you your soul was on fire unless you converted, then ask for 20 copper coins for a new tin roof on the rectory please... The guy was enraged.

The club on fire thing looked like a good idea. He realised that his torch seemed to have a will of it's own and so after spending what felt like an eternity igniting the rags around Westians' club, he switched the weapons in his hands. Suddenly it was the torch which felt the surer weapon!

Lighting up his newly fashioned club from Haynuus's torch, Westian looked for the mummy. Seeing him edge away from the centre of the room did not reduce his anger, the hideous unnatural movements just made it worse.
"There is no respite for you, monster, save the eternal rest of your final destruction." He walked forward and brandished his now burning club. The closer he came to the creature the greater the sheer wrongness of its very existence affected him. And the stronger he felt the need to remove this thing from the world of men, even though he knew that it would be a powerful foe. "In the name of all that is good we will send you back to the hells that spawned you!"
Continuing forward he moved beside the large sarcophogus and picked up another club from the ground, ready to throw when the mummy came closer.

Fear struck Falkor, he could not recall seeing anything like this before and the noise that had boomed out before gave him the impression this thing, this monster, was not here for a party. Seeing the others react Falkor prepared himself - he had previously wished to get involved and sleigh some monsters, but the reality was all the more frightening and with the others preparing for battle Falkor readied the bandages, he felt that they may be required shortly and he wasn't sure if the others had the same skills in healing that he possessed.

OOC: No move for this turn, just prep for the next ;)

Westian could see the mummy clearly shuffle from side to side as the cleric delivered his tirade. It was only the odd head movement that perhaps gave away what the creature was doing. The mummy was checking if Westian could see it. Westian had betrayed his abiltiy to spot the thing in the shadows clearly by keeping his eyes fixed on it.

"Bah-Pah!" came the gutteral utterance.

The creature cast a quick glance to the end of the hall with the half orc behind the fire. However, it then aligned its body towards the cleric and mage and began to charge. It was not a swift run, but it was powerful and inexorable, each foot planted firmly and pushing off like a leap.

The creature did not seem to heed the tomb between them, as if it planned to simply drive through the space. And the party could certainly believe this was possible. However, one of the remains of its fellows caught on one leg. It seemed to notice it and jumped to a halt, dismissing the straggling bandage with a dismissive kick.

However, this seemed to stop the creature. It looked back to the rags on the floor for a moment. It then turned around and glared at the group, settling on the cleric.

"Go-bada, meh. GO-BADA MEH KAKA-UCAH!" it bellowed, banging a fist on its chest and letting a deep snarl build from its chest. While none of the other would spot it, to Westian's elvish sight there seemed to be a tiny sparkle deep in the eyesockets.

Hey kids, trips hazards are bad, ok. Falkor and Ameena will be able to almost see the mummy, though it is still just at the edge of the normal light. Westian and Haynuus can of course still see it ok.

Haynuus, you can move now to end round 2, and the rest of you can also take your next move for round 3.

Locking eyes on the monster Westian flung the club he had just picked up in the mummies direction, although he could not see if it had made any significant contact. Then moving back to stand beside the fire he held his flaming club up and stood ready to meet the mummy head on.

Ameena sends a slightly startled look in Westian's direction when he starts bellowing at the undead creature. She hadn't thought him to be like that - has she been wrong about him all this time? She remembers various creatures giving her similar kinds of species on seeing her, just because they've never seen a murafu before and don't like rats. She begins to wonder whether she should be careful around the half-elf, in case he starts to exhibit such behaviour around other creatures as well. Of course, it could be that he's simply trying to intimidate the creature that's coming toward them, but really, is it impossible to intimidate the undead? Surely, they would feel no emotions, including fear?
Stil unsure as to what to do, Ameena takes a few steps over to the nearest of the tall stone containers and peers inside, nose twitching, to see if there's anything interesting inside. She maintains awareness of the others, though, keeping her ears attuned to anything she might want to take notice of.

OOC - Presumably it's a Perception check that's needed to inspect the sarcophagus - hrmm, 11...plus my bonus I think is six, I think...so, if that's right, then 17. Oh, and I'm now in square G1. I'm guessing the sniffing/looking counts as a Standard action so I'm okay there :).

Falkor was still frightened, and seeing the change in Westian made him even more nervous - Still, he kept his calm, moved back and peered inside the sarcophagus to his right - perhaps he would find something usefull. Whilst he did this he kept one eye on the monster thing in case it came charging towards him - he wasn't prepared to take any chances.

OOC - In square B3, Percpetion check (1d20=12)
