Westian left the doors alone for now, joining the rest of the group in thoroughly checking the area they were in.

The shape at the keyhole came back to him, and a wave of nausea accompanied a shape in his mind. The symbol of the sun. RA. For some reason, the keyhole had this rune etched into it. Why would a symbol denoting light be placed as a decoration on that keyhole? It seemed out of place!

Westian, you know RA!

Would Westian be lucky enough to have more of these visual triggers, triggers that might actually remind him of the basic building blocks of magic - the runes of element?

When Westian came to the new tombs, he quickly found their contents - in the one closest to the corner he found a larger shield decaying at the edges but solid on the main body of it.

It had an oblong shape to it, and there seemed to be the decoration of leaves on the outer jagged edges. The centre possessed the same crest as everywhere else, clearer than other items that had been found, and a crest that was proudly born on the two unbroken sarcophagi lids. Westian had not seen the centre before, and felt the familiar naausia again. So detailed and large, not even the mirror imagge could disguise the rune of IR.

And there's IR. Don't expect these runes to come so thick and fast later. This area is special and has a few dotted around :)

It took a moment for him to recover and look at the rest of the crest. Now he could see the eagle crest was very detailed, the mirrored rune of Ir ornately fluted on its edges. The eagle's head looked directly out of the crest. Its legs were splayed out but now Westian could see the talons were curled, apparently holding a thin vine. At the top, what had appeared to be wings stretched out when looked at on decaying relics and broken lids were now shown to be two arms ending in hands. It was an unusual choice. The hand on the left seemed to hold some form of stone. The hand on the right seemed to be balled into a fist, and on one of the fingers was a band, as if that hand wore a ring.

The tomb closest to the corner, which possessed the shield, also bore a name on the lid - 'Valson, houseguard'. The tomb closer to the centre of the hall was oddly empty. Its lid proclaimed, 'Demian, house retainer'

Falkor meanwhile checked the central tomb. It was, sadly, empty, although it took Falkor a boost to be able to see over the edge.

The lid was to one side, still intact where the mummy had pushed it. Falkor checked the writing that Haynuus had attempted to read aloud earlier.

'Here lies Kakaluca, Low Lord of Viborg. Founding ruler.'
'Twisted by Chaos, laid here to find peace once more.'

Beneath that was written, in smaller lettering:

'This noble man and fifty warriors came here from ruins of Ya-Brodin, seeking peace from the enemies of enlightenment. He forged a settlement that endures to this day and had lived in quiet endeavour until the time of Chaos. Both he and his legacy were twisted under Chaos. May the restoration of Viborg quiet him also.'

And below that:

'Sleep well, old friend. Your rest is assured while my protection remains.'

Falkor realises that the mummy they fought was this man. What had happened to the Grey Lord, if someone he called a friend was allowed to rise again?

Ameena could not triangulate where the voice was coming from, it didn't seem to be from any source that her ears could isolate. Almost as if it was in her head! Perhaps some ambient noise that sounded like a voice. Ameena meanwhile continued, checking the floors and the tombs slowly to ensure nothing was missed.

To Ameena, the floor has smelled of age and occasionally of death where rags were. The clubs gave no scent except for that of wood. Oddly, the tombs themselves did not smell particularly old.

The second tomb around was intact, and Ameena could quickly see inside it. However, still a thorough search demanded sniffing the corners and all around it. However, the contents made it difficult. Inside was a battered and tarnished piece metal, attached to a broken pole of wood. Some form of spear. Funnily, its smashed size might have made it useful to her, except the head of it was useless. As it was the smell of the death of metal was off-putting to scenting the rest of the tomb. Ameena noticed where the metal and wood met was an upraised bump. The shape was similar to that on the breastplate, and despite the distortion she could make out a few details of a crest.

Around the wall and occasionally on the floor were more signs of that mold from earlier. Again, it seemed dying. There were the occasional thin strands in the mold, like a cobweb strand.

Update to the limit of your known actions so far - I'll update again once I know Westian/money's next moves, and Ian's if he's back. Feel free to retcon any reactions, or new actions, based on the above. Though I think it's the next update that would free up some people to act and give others something unusual to think about!

Ameena reaches inside the stone container and pulls out the broken spear-looking weapon. She gives it one final sniff, then places it on the floor nearby for one of the others to look at. They seem rather busy doing their own investigations but maybe one of them will find this object of interest.
Remembering that she's still hungry, she reaches inside the pouch containing her food and brings it out to eat a little more, having felt nothing peculiar since the small nibble she had before. She eats a little more than last time, but plenty remains when she returns it to her pouch. She also has a few more laps of water from her flask.
Then she continues her explorations.

OOC - Just a little reactionary post based on what you've had her find in your update, Wuffy :). I wonder if that's my shortest IC post so far...

"Boo!" said Haynuus to Ameena teasingly while she was investigating the depths of a coffin. Her acute sense of hearing would probably have betrayed his little ruse, however. "You said something 'bout metal clothes?... Armour? Whipeee! I'll take a look, thanks." And with that the simple minded half-orc hopped over to the tomb.

He had come back to his senses somewhat, and was ready to venture on.

Ameena is aware of the half-orc's approach, but is glad he didn't speak too forcefully when pretending to try and scare her - she still might have been startled, considering she stands at barely above knee-height on him. She twitches an ear in amusement as, apparently now oblivious to the bandaged wound in his side, he heads for the stone container where she'd left the large metal object. She hopes he won't exert himself too much and risk preventing the woud from healing properly.
Still, he seems to have tried to initiate some kind of communication, so she considers that she might as well do so in return while she continues her exploration.
"I..have some questions." she ventures. "I understand that these stone things are where people of some races store the bodies of their dead. I don't really understand why, but i know they do it. And I know that sometimes, magic can cause a dead one to walk about, like that creature we just fought. But what was it? Why was it wrapped in strips of cloth like that?"
She pauses, then thinks to add something else.
"I know all this might be obvious to one of your race, but it isn't to one of mine. I know I've not been wandering for long, and even then haven't spent much time around other races like yours, but I don't know whether I'll understand everything about the way your races live."

Haynuus dragged the breastplate by it's straps clanging across the flagstone floor back to Ameena again, amazed that someone asked him these difficult questions. He did however understand that these Moofurryrooh were a very different peoples.

"Only the rich people get buried in a stone, where most of us will get buried in a ditch if we're lucky. The humans seem to find the cycle of life and death especially difficult to grasp and are always clinging on to this idea that somehow they continue to exist in a similar form after their spirit has left their bodies. The orcs however have strong beliefs in the cycle of life and death, creation and destruction, and so don't place such an import on life when compared to death... Sometimes the way you die is more important than what you did in life."

It was then Haynuus dropped the breastplate on the floor and sat on it's rusty top placing his head in his hands. "You know this old guy once told me that many moons ago it was evil people that twisted the orcs from their natural cycle of creation and destruction, to the path of just destruction. They didn't just destroy back then, but took the rubble and applied it to regenerate things as well..." He shook his head as if trying to escape from a daze. He couldn't think clearly and decided to change track.

"Evil people created that THING we set on fire. It was probably once a human noble or great warrior that they cast terrible magic spells over to give immortal life. A life without blood, a life without meaning. I have seen such people and the orcs around me would cower in terror for they cause great suffering to achieve their goals. I don't know what spells they use to raise the dead, but I do know that by denying a natural death to these beings they cause great misery. I understand why the clerics get so angry..."

"Ameena, you are lucky to come from a people that are ignorant of such things."

Ameena shrugs as she continues to search.
"Maybe. We just accept death. it happens to everything, and we don't understand why some races fear it so much. It would be like fearing the dawn, or the sensation of hunger - it's something that will happen, so why feel anything negative about it? We know that other races believe many different things, but we believe that the self consists of three things - the body, the mind, and the spirit. The body is weakest, for it feels things like pain and hunger, but it's home to the other two. The mind is stronger, and has things like the personality and memories. The spirit, which some call the soul, is the very essence of that creature or plant. The most basic emotions and instincts are found there, though if the spirit and the mind stay together, the traits of the mind are usually stronger and can think with greater logic than the spirit. At least, to some extent. When someone dies, it's just their body that dies, freeing the spirit and possibly some or all of the mind to go to wherever they believe they will go. So the body becomes just a body, a dead thing. It isn't the person any more, because their essence has gone. Then, as far as I understand it, when people use their magic to create the undead, they just make the body stand up and move around again. But it doesn't have anyone inside it, just the magic of the person who rose it."
She pushes aside a small rock to sniff underneath it.
"But this is what the murafu think. We know that not everyone thinks the same, and that some people get angry with people who think differently. I don't understand that either. But that's the way it is."

Westian listened with interest to the metaphysical discussion ongoing in the room. He had heard about the corruption of the orcs before, but never was sure how much was true and how much was propaganda. The priests in his order had a very dim view of orcs; sometimes this clouded their judgment to such an extent that they forgot their commitment to uncover Truth. Half-truths and outright lies were at times employed when it was necessary to rally people to a cause, indeed these were weapons Westian had used himself when he felt it would serve the greater good. Of course the enmity between elves and orcs pre-dated the founding of his order, Corellon Larethian and several orc High Lords had fought each other during the times they had walked the earth with the mortal races. And the gods had long memories.
Bringing himself back to the present Westian began examining the items they had found. A tiara. A breastplate. A falchion…it felt good in his hands, as if he had wielded one before, though he could not recall ever having done so. A shield and a short sword. At least they would be better prepared for whatever they met next.

Falkor moved around the room, continuing his investigations (which seemed to follow no pattern at all)! He next turned his attention to the remaining sconces starting with the furthest from their entrance and moving clockwise (F13). He made a mental note to catch up with Westian later also - he could share any knowledge gained and see if the IR rune would be of use to him. While he did this he shouted out to the others to tell them of his last find... "There is a sword in the tomb over there, I'm not sure who is best suited to arm themselves but if no-one else wants it I will be more than happy to arm myself". He continued his investigations into the sconce...

Ameena continued her slow investigation across the floor and into the tombs. There seemed to be no additional information on this side, not really any sign of any passage. There was a very faint whiff of something in the air, but it must be coming form the other side. She would get there eventually.

This tomb was again smashed outwards, with debris on the floor and at the bottom of the tomb, and Ameena had to move the odd angular shapes to fully explore the interior. Sniffing in the corners Ameena discovered the handles to a pair of weapons - an ornate dagger and a short sword. Both seemed, once she excavated them, to be in surprisingly good conition, similar to the falchion the mummy possessed. They proudly bore the same crest as the remaining items, still tarnished but at least clear There was no distortion to the weapons.

Meanwhile, Haynuus has begun to move around the room, exploring the various piles of rags. Sadly, apart from making him sneeze as he dislodged ashes, he did not find much. He could occasionally free a club under a set.

Ameena started exploring a floor tile with rags that Haynuus was about to abandon, rags close to the torch sconce by the central tomb. However, her nose managed to lock on to a faint tang of unexpected metal. Buried deep, and looped into one of the strands of bandage, was a simple ring. It was similar to the circlet - tarnished yet still intact. The band was simple, with some delicate engraving that time and the surroundings had eroded. At one point it opened into a large flat, and there seemed to be the same crest still half visible on the eroded face. The ring was too large for Murafu fingers, seemingly more suited to a humanoid of Haynuus or Westian's size.

After that discovery, Ameena carried on her methodical search, while Haynuus had renewed vigour for the rest of the rags. Sadly, neither were to discover anything new. About the only discovery Haynuus made was that there seemed to be more than one set of rags near the tomb that had collapsed in on itself. It was not particularly significant as discoveries went. Haynuus decided to move on to the rubble at the blocked passageway.

Westian went about assembling the items and checking them more thoroughly. The falchion and the two new weapons Ameena had discovered, while fine examples of their craft of whatever time period they came from, did not seem in supernaturally good condition. Certainly, they wore their years well but did show signs of age. They may well be useable for now, but perhaps they should not be relied upon for too long.

The remaining items - the shields and breastplates, the less good condition swords and the broken items - certainly spoke better of the age they undoubtedly were. Those weapons still intact might be useable, but he was not sure if they would be wise to rely on them in battle. Still, anything was better than nothing!

It was as Westian was checking the broken sword in the open intact tomb that Falkor had found in the mummy fight - to the right of the openable door - that Westian noted something odd. While every other crest, from what could be told, was the same eagle facing the looker holding a vine, the crest on this tomb seemed different. The Eagle's mouth was open, and by some cunning crafting of the face its eyes looked angry. The splayed out claws were not holding vines at the bottom, infact the claws were at the top aswell in place of the human hands. All four claws help what appeared to be a rose each. The central design of the crest was not the mirrored rune of IR, it was instead an odd twist of that shape. It took Westian a moment, but he suddenly realised it was as if the SAR rune had been used, yet split in the middle and each part turned to disguise it to looking more like the reflected IR shape.

The tomb lid said two things. A name, 'Damaluca,' and below it a simple phrase, 'In death, all sins forgiven.'

Westian looked around the hall to see if any of the smashed lids yileded any more writings. Only the tomb that Ameena had found the good condition sword and dagger in was intact enough to reveal a name and designation. 'Glodo, houseguard captain.' Westian was about to check the decorations, but could see Falkor was already in full flow.

Falkor had busied himself with the wall sconces already. He had his own torch, and there was still the extinguished 'magical' torch to use. The torch sconce directly by the door openable door sorry money, my map wasn't clear later, F13 is the RA keyhole so I moved you to B9 next. Before Falkor even started, he felt a chill despite the cloak he wore and the torch he bore. The torch did not splutter, it did not seem to be a wind, and when Falkor put his cloak around him the chill seemed, if possible - worse. However, investigation allowed him to ignore it for the moment. He tried to use a torch in the sconce, and to pull on it, and look for any mechanisms. Nothing sounded, nothing seemed to open anywhere visible - no hidden backs in any of the tombs close by, nothing changed in the central tomb. Sadly, no suddenly staircase revealed.

Falkor moved onwards to the torch holder by the staircase instead, trying to torches on the two sconces. Sadly, again no creak, groans, nor parting of the rubble. As before in the room they woke up in that was now above them, if the torch sconces did anything it was nothing he could detect, or required more strength than he possessed.

However, as Falkor handled the extinguished torch from the room they woke in, the halfling spotted something close to the top. It seemed to be a glowing ember, as if the torch was still trying to hang on to life and light and was only slowly dying. As his mind resolved the barely visible glowing shape he felt elated and sick at the same time, having to steady himself on the wall.

The glowing symbol was the rune for FUL. It had been inscribed on the torch, perhaps the means of having given it its unusual affinity to fire. However, not only did Falkor's sighting of the rune bring back a rush of memory of magical talents using the rune, if also brought a quick confusion of memory!

He remembered casting fireballs in an odd montage of his life. And stranger, two phrases came to his mind that sounded like his voice, and Ameena's! He couldn't quite grasp actual sentences, his mind was threatening to black out. However, he swore he could recall Ameena asking him about fire. And Falkor mentioning something about being glad 'Nex' was lost.

Falkor moved on to the last torch sconce, however like the rest it did not seem to respond to anything. It seemed the greatest discovery was to do with the items the sconces held!

Falkor, you now know FUL! Sorry, it's been hidden in plain sight for too long, despite a few hints. Bad rolls and distractions seemed to have gotten in the way! Always had planned to reveal it soon enough, now seems the time. And yes, in this case knowing FUL and IR does let you remember the fireball spell as mentioned. I'll detail the FUL and FUL-IR spells soon, along with your schools!

The light from the burning rags had gone out by now, and only Falkor's torchlight illuminated the scene for the party of them.

Ameena carried on her explorations towards the door, her nose guiding her not the light or lack of it. Ameena had arrived at the door, scenting something odd. The singing she had heard earlier seemed to fade as she moved down the hall, although she could still not tell where it came from.

However, a new mystery came up as she got close to the locked door. The lock itself revealed nothing. Well, nothing except old scents. This door was apparently occasionally used. However, like many things the scents were faded. Certainly weeks or a month old. There was no smell of metal, as had been scented in the floor above.

However, as Ameena got to the door itself, she could smell something stronger. It was a faint whiff, but she could swear there were fresher scents. Stranger, a scent that seemed familiar, although smelling it and focusing on it made her head spin.

There was no mistaking it though. It was the scent of people! At least one familiar person! The scent was faint, they were not directly beyond the door, but it was still strong enough to show their passage had not been that long ago. Certainly within the day! And those people had not come through the door this way, there was no strong scents around in the hall. They had obviously opened the door from the other side!

Dun dun dun!

Ok, there we go, update up. Falkor and Westian seem to be finished their actions, though they can certainly combine forces and recheck any areas if you suspect the problem is the DC check is simply to subtle for either of you alone.

Ian, unless otherwise stated Haynuus will be going to the rubble, correct? Will Haynuus just directly attack it and yank bits out, will he be examining it cautiously (say a take 10 check all around) or thoroughly poking around (take 20 check)?

Ameena, will your namesake change her investigations based on this, or will she finish exploring the rest of the hall first then come back?

Anyway, done, next update tomorrow evening, as always questions answered before then. Oh, Ill put up the spells and schools for money in the rules thread, and post a list of what you lot have found in the OOC thread.

"Indeed" said Haynuus agreeing to Ameena's last statement. "Hmm, better get to work!" and with that trotted off to pick up the small shield that someone had found, while putting on the rusty old breastplate. It was not that comfortable, but it felt good to have better protection over his recent injury.

The pile of rubble in the corner of the room was next to gain his attention. Not being either a miner, nor patient, the half-orc waded into the dust and loose rocks and started work with gusto. He had to be careful not to re-open his wound by the side of his stomach yet he worked hard enough to build up a sweat... Again. His colleagues would surely know by now that he smelt. Making what must be his daily intelligence check he started using the small shield as a shovel on the looser rocks, digging then casting them aside as he slowly advanced. The bigger rocks would occasionally move and fall around him and with two hands he would pick them up and shift them to the side of where he was working. There must surely be something at the end of this mess, but heaven forbid if anything was actually buried here as Haynuus applied great attention to the individual fallen rock rather than what was going on around him. He would maintain a good pace like this for 10 to 20 minutes.

As his searching had brought him closer to Falkor, Westian began to talk about the fact that the runes were slowly coming back to him. "I have remembered some more runes!" he began, somewhat excitedly. Pointing to the key hole he said "RA. The symbol on the doorway, do you see it? The rune for the sun. And I found another." Pointing to the inscription on the tombs he continued "The wings, the symbol of flight, IR. By the High Lords, they are coming back to me!"

Then speaking to the group in general he spoke in a low, clear voice "I don't have a clue what is behind that door" - indicating at the door with the RA-shaped keyhole. "I could hear nothing beyond it, I don't even know if it is locked or not. Considering what we have seen I did not wish to experiment to find out... But the other door certainly appears to be unlocked. I could not see or hear anyone beyond it, but there is a sense of goodness emanating from within. I have not felt anything like it before, and it certainly feels out of place in a location like this. That said, I think we should still be on our guard if we enter...I don't even trust my own instincts down here. What about the rest of you, anything interesting uncovered?"

Haynuus stopped work for a moment, spat out a piece of rubble he was holding in his mouth (Ptuuueyy), and said:

"Urmm?... OK!"

And returned to work.

Falkor looked at Westian, he was overcome with emotions again, just as he had been when he had first awoke - although that seemed a long and distant memory now... "I have learnt some more runes, not sure if i can harness the power behind them but i can recall that these will help light our way" with this Falkor turned to another pile of rags and concentrated on creating a burst of fire...

The fire instantly leapt from Falkor's direction towards the rags which caught alight with ease...

"Now, we must get armed up and look to move on, assuming everyone is well enough - I fear that time is against us, we only have limited rations and I can't see any sign of food or water here...."

Falkor looked towards Westian "we must also discuss the runes I have discovered, we must do this quickly"

Still performing her own investigations, Ameena listens to the discussion of the others. Westian and Falkor seem keen on pressing onward. She knows they should do so soon, but wants to finish exploring this room first - what if they miss something important? She is impressed by Falkor's display of magic, but hopes he can control it. Burning torches are one thing - magically-conjured fire on a particular spot is quite another.
She wonders whether she should tell them what she's found so far, but then, the strange smells around the door she's sniffed at might not be of any relevance if they can't get there - since that door certainly appears to be locked and probably requires a key to fit the lock in order to open, anything that's beyond said door is currently out of their reach. Maybe if they find a key, then she should tell them what she smelt. Or maybe she should tell them anyway. She's still not entirely comfortable in their company, since she still doesn't know them very well and didn't get to meet them the way she'd normally meet someone.
Of course, she can't fully remember various introductions and things from the past at the moment - her memories of her various past friends and companions still haven't reawoken. But she pushes that thought aside for the moment, since it's not really relevant to the current situation and besides, it hurts.

The flames that leapt up from Falkor's little test startled Haynuus, who was not really paying attention to what the halfling was saying. The lack of concentration cost him as a minor rock fall occurred and trapped a leg in the loose stones. He heaved himself out, annoyed at himself for his mistake and concequent scratches yet pleased that his sandle was still flopping on the end of his foot.

He sighed, and decided to return to the others as they would soon decide on a new course of action anyway. He moved to the new source of light and noticed the artifacts that they had found were placed carefully on the floor. "Pretty ring" he said, not ever having the opportunity to afford one nor possess the knowledge if it was of a fine workmanship or not. He placed it on his finger for a moment, sniffed, and then took it off again to return it to the pile of loot.

Next was the circlet, that Haynuus was a little bit more wary of. Maybe it's cursed and causes a slow and lingering death? Hmm, better be careful with that one.... It did look nice and shiney, though. So he flipped it in the air and caught it on his head. "Yeah!" The offended looks of the people around him after having been distrubed from their work was sufficient for Haynuus to take it off again.

Maybe it'd be better to just rest here and let the others finish, Haynuus.

Westian was surprised at the response to his words. All he had asked was if anyone had found anything. Falkor then set some rags on fire. Ameena looked at him for a second and then continued searching. And Haynuus had done some bizarre cabaret act with a pretty tiara.

Still, all of this could be useful. Ameena's thorough search had the potential to discover something important. Westian was not a veteran dungeon crawler, but he knew that small details could hide great rewards. Haynuus had at least being a willing guinea pig to show that the ring and circlet were apparently harmless. "You don't feel any different after trying those on, Haynuus, do you?"

But most interesting of all was that Falkor had cast a spell. A true spell, using runes. He heard Falkor intone the symbol FUL, and a surge of remembrance ran through him. "Well done my friend!" He slapped the halfling on the back. "At least we have one spell-caster in the group. Even if it is just the magic of pure destruction that wizards wield" he added with a grin. Westian's spirits were beginning to return to normal after the shock of the previous encounter.

"Right then, I think it's time we move on", Falkor called aloud. He was feeling very content that he had cast a spell and with Westians words he felt even more important and pleased with his effort...

he also looked at the remaining artifacts on the floor, he had decided that the small sword would suit him well and went to take this, he was sure that it would be of more use to him than the others! He also remembered the shudder the cloak had caused earlier - this unerved him and so he took it off folded it neatly to put in his backpack... for now it would most likely do less harm in his satchell than wrapped around him!

Ameena was still sniffing the central hall, and though apparently unconcerned with light the burning rags would illuminate her search enough.

Therefore, the party could still make use of Falkor's torch before its light finally gave out to explore onwards. Haynuus took up a guarding position and Falkor was holding the torch and perhaps readying another spell. Therefore, Westian found himself the one to open the door. Again, the soothing peace washed over him.

The doors opened, and both the others found themselves for a moment feeling odd. There was a strange feeling that turned to a peaceful feeling. A paranoid person might have felt as if someone or something had just judged them.

The black wooden doors opened easily on their hinges, revealing a dark smaller hall beyond.
Unlike the haggard grey walls of the hall behind them, this place has a white glint that spoke of marbled walls. Aside from two empty torch sconces looking across the room at each other, the place was plain, yet clean.

For Falkor the end of the room was dim, apparently ending in an alcove of some sort. For Haynuus and Westian, the room was perfectly visible. There were a few small shelves set at the back of the room, and on one of them seemd to be a rolled up parchment and probably a quill from the feathered shape.

However, it was the central alcove that was the most impressive part. To Haynuus it lookd like a recessed table, also of marble. It was thick, with odd designs.

However, to Westian it was a religeous item of tremendous significance. This was a fabled Altar of Rebirth, where it was said that powerful prayers were answered and those deathly ill could gain new life.

More importantly at this current time, Westian could see the symbol carved into the wall above the altar. Something in his mind resisted seeing it, something made him feel dizzy, but nothing worked to block it out. Westian had discovered one of the cornerstones of priest magic, and the welcome memory of it flooded back overwhelming any passing sensations.

The symbol of water and life, VI, was carved above the altar.

And Westian, and soon enough Falkor, gain the Vi rune. And there we go, Ameena was ri-

'Beware,' said an urgent voice in the small chapel. Sadly, none currently present could hear it at all.

-ght about Vi altars. See, you did have a nice DM who likes you. Ish. Anyway, please feel free to retcon any part of the above. This is happening in parallel to Ameena's final check of the hall, so two things will quickly happen. a) She will finish and can come see what you foolish people are doing and join in looking, and b) Falkor's torch is going to go out in a few minutes so you'll need to figure out what you are going to do about light.

Luckily, no cliffhanger for the weekend this time. well, except for the one just above, which none of your characters know about yet.

Levle map including new chapel bit:

A torch held at the doorway can illuminate everything but the corners to Falkor, and Westian and Haynuus can see the whole area (well, Westian sees the corners dimly).

Ameena finishes her exploration of the room and looks around to see the others opening the nearby set of doors. She flinches as they do so, wondering whether something bad will happen. But nothing does. Cautiously, she creeps closer and, nose twitching, follows a little way behind the others. If they want to go this way, she might as well keep her information for later. They don't seem too keen on spending a great deal of time discussing things. Then again, they have limited food and water, and no idea as to where the way out is in this place. If there is one.
No, stop thinking like that. Ignore it. There might be a way out somewhere. If they all keep looking, they might find it. Hopefully.

Falkor noticed something was not right - the torch sconces were not quite right. Still.. nothing had happened in the last room so this time he was prepared to throw caution to the wind... with this he grabbed the torch from Haynuss (storred in his backpack), lit it using his own torch, and ran to the first sconce (on the right entering the room) and ran across to the second opposite... but before he placed this torch in he did a quick check... Check on sconce (1d20=8)

OOC: just a note that i assumed the torch was still easily accessable and i've not missed anything, also that if the check reveals nothing Falkor will put his almost burnt out torch in the scone... Good luck everyone!

Seems fine. Are you lighting the new torch or is it going in unlit?

Haynuus helped Falkor with extracting the torch from his backpack, and watched the others work.

"No nothing - nowt - nada." he replied to Wetian's question. "I tried the ring on me finger, and the shiney thing on my head and felt no different... Who wants 'em?" and with that he extracted not only the ring and the circlet but the dagger as well.

He'd noticed the highly crafted alcove with a symbol above it, but was ignorant of what it's significance meant. While it was true that Haynuus didn't possess an acute sense of hearing and missed the magical voice, he did have earlobes that wanted to survive. Scratching on one of them he said "Bewaaaare. That alcove looks magical." Which was already immediately obvious to the rest of them of course.

Ameena sniffs her way into the new room, looking around and wondering whether there's anything of interest in here. She moves forward cautiously, sniffing as usual. She watches Falkor as he places his torch in one of the holders on the wall, and listens to Haynuus as he talks to Westian about the objects he's tried on. At his mention of the alcove, she looks toward it. Magical? It certainly looks ornate, and there is a symbol carved above it which reminds her of magic-users she's met before. This must be another of those runes they use to spin and focus magic into a shape they can use. She recalls that the shape represents water, which she supposes would be obvious anyway, but doesn't really know much more than that, having never really delved into the uses of magic herself.

OOC - How high up are the shelves, and how high up/big is the Altar? I would suggest comparing heights and things to Westian, since he's probably the "average" of the group in terms of physical size. Then I'll know how high it is on Ameena, and whether, say, she'll need to stand on tippy-toes to be able to peek over the edge of the shelves or whatever.

About waist height to Westian, so Ameena could see the flat of it but couldn't reach the VI symbol above it. I'll detail the contents and results of everyone's actions later on Sunday night ready for a Monday start. Still need OB's actions aswell!

Westian walked forward and then stood staring at the altar for a minute, just to make sure he was not mistaken. The Vi symbol had come back to him, and its presence here seemed to confirm what he suspected, this truly was an Altar of Rebirth, created with the power that only the High Lords possessed. Feeling somewhat giddy he laughed out loud and stood right beside it. “I cannot believe it. This is an Altar of Rebirth, it brings the dead back to life. To full life, not the hideous half-life we associate with undeath. I had heard stories, but never thought I would see one up close….it must have been formed by the Grey Lord himself,” he whispered in awe. Westian had discovered something that excited him, and he found himself talking in full flow. “In the stories of the champions who defeated Lord Chaos it was said they used these altars on occasion when one of them fell in battle. At least in some versions of the stories. We should be thankful we found this. I hope we do not need it, but if one of us succumbs to whatever creatures inhabit this dungeon we should bring the remains back here to restore them to life. Now that would be something to see…” He was tracing his fingers through the Vi symbol engraved in the stone as he spoke. As he finished he reached out to pick up the nearby scroll and unfolded it.

As Westian explains the purpose of the strange stone alcove, Ameena stares at it in a kind of awestruck confusion. Bring the dead back to life? But that would mean dragging their mind and spirit back from wherever they'd gone and forcing them back into the body, surely? Is such a thing even possible? She isn't sure she wants to find out.
"But...death is supposed to be the end." she says quietly, still looking at the altar. "If we could be brought back so easily, why die in the first place? I...don't think I'd want to be forced back into my body that way. When I die, I'll be dead. That's all it is."
Having satisfied herself by voicing her thoughts on this matter out loud, she puts a little thought into the other things Westian just mentioned. Lord Chaos. The name is familiar. She recalls some stories about him, that he was some kind of powerful creature who wanted to tear apart the world and turn all to...well, to chaos. Such stories, she recalls, were spread, rumour-like across the world, reaching various murafu villages and bearing the usual irregular structure of a rumour - no two tales were exactly alike, each having various major or minor differences. But the murafu know not to blindly believe things that they merely hear from others. While it is probably true that someone called the Grey Lord performed an experiment and created someone called Lord Chaos who was then defeated by a small group of people inside a mountain somewhere, anything else may not necessarily be directly true. But then, she has heard so many little details and small additions to this well-known tale, that sorting them into what seems true and what seems untrue would be incredibly difficult. Perhaps it's all true. Perhaps none of it is. Maybe a lot of it is exaggerated. That's something that seems to come hand in hand with rumour - exaggeration. But without having been there, without having seen any of this for herself, Ameena knows she'll never know for sure what happened. Because not every member of other races is content to stick to the truth, and those who are may still misremember some details.
Remembering the words she had just spoken about death, Ameena glances around and speaks again, not addressing any particular individual but rather speaking to them all.
"Speaking of death...that creature we fought...it was a dead human? Undead, I mean. Why was it wrapped up in cloth like that? Would it have done that to itself, or did the person who made it walk do that for some reason? It's just...it seems a rather strange thing to do to the dead, that's all..."
She know she's ignorant of how these races treat their dead, and doesn't want to sound like she might be disrespecting their strange customs, but...well, they are so strange, to her at least. How can she hope to become aware of and understand these things if she doesn't ask about them?

Turning to face Ameena he began to speak, dealing with her first comment first “Are you sure about that? If you die you do not want us to carry you here? You might feel differently when the time comes. Especially if after you die you wake up in a lake of fire” he added with a friendly chuckle. “But seriously, if that is your wish I will respect it. Remember though that we may need you here in the land of the living. I have no idea why we have been placed here, but the more I see the more I believe we have been selected for some purpose. Maybe some greater cause needs you too. If the stories are to be believed the Grey Lord’s champions may have used these altars, with no ill effects.”

“As for the creature in the last room, that was a mummy. Yes, it was a human in life. Some cultures have a practice of preserving their dead, although it tends to only be done for the most important in society – kings, high priests and so on. Mostly this is in human cultures, though some ancient elven societies had the same practice. Normally that is fine, they do not decay but they are as dead as anyone else. Only some truly dark magic can be used to re-animate them, either a necromancer raises them or some curse was placed on the tomb and they return to life in certain circumstances. They are evil beyond redemption, both because of the half- life they stole back without the consent of the High Lords, and because of their cruel and wicked actions. For that reason all good priests are sworn to remove them whenever they are encountered.”

While the heavy conversation continues Haynuus slips the ring on, and starts to play with the circlet on his head[*] and pockets the dagger. In a practiced motion he pretends to hold the falchion in his left hand, reaches in his pocket with his right, then imitates a hipster throwing action. It'd look cool were it not the fact that he'd lose a very important appendage at the start of the action if he got it wrong.

The whole magicky alcove thing appeared overrated to the half-orc but he intelligently kept his mouth shut. Our cleric was quite animated again. He wreckond he'd be the first to try it out anyways.

[*] Maybe people won't think he's that camp if he put's it on like *this* at an angle... A sort of Clint Eastwood look except of a cowboy hat it'd be with a tiara...
