Thanks, Christophe.

Another thing I noticed while watching Anthony's game....
I don't think I saw any 'pauses' with the 'Escape' key.
You can 'Freeze the game' for free. Time stops while the
game is frozen and you can do some planning, have
some lunch, or simply let your fingers cool down.

Moreover, it is very easy to edit the 'Freezes' out of the
resulting Record file so that the resulting 'Movie' looks
cleaner.

I wish I had known that. It would have helped a lot. You can see pauses when I got to the top level, I was planning where to go.

Well it required many, many attempts but I have the new
record. I copied all the tricks I learned from Anthony, I was
a little lucky (I found the Eye of Time, for example, and used
it to bypass the Couatls), and I made some mistakes (I
mishandled the Skeletons on the Neta way and spent time
getting an unneeded Onyx Key, for example).
The final result is 1 hour, 14 minutes, 2.8 seconds.
I spent about one hour in the prison training against
the Rock Piles before I ran out of food. I also spent a lot of
time kicking the doorway at the top of the stairs. I had
Craftsman- level on all four skills before entering the dungeon.
Anyone who wishes to use my CSBGAME.DAT as a starting point
is welcome to do so. It will save about an hour's work in
the prison.

The recording is at webpages.charter.net/pstevens1.
file=CSBMovie10.zip.

Current results for the record:
Paul Stevens (Toadrot) 11 hours, 49 minutes , 20 seconds
Guillaume Bastard (Plague) 11 hours, 7 seconds
Paul Stevens (Toadrot) 8 hours, 20 minutes, 11 seconds
Guillaume Bastard (Petal) 5 hours, 7 minutes, 8 seconds
Paul Stevens (Buzzzz) 4 hours, 36 minutes, 7 seconds
Anthony Bracegirdle(Petal) 1 hour, 47 minutes, 28.8 seconds
Paul Stevens (Buzzzzz) 1 hour, 14 minutes, 2.8 seconds

Hello Paul. You beat my record!!!!! Anyway, a couple of questions before I try to beat it:
1) Did you get that Onyx key at ROS especially so that at NETA you would be able to get the key of b?
2) At NETA you somehow killed the vexirk at the altar and the mirror of dawn appeared. How?
3) How did you know where the Topaz key was?
4) How did you get to the right entrance to KU so that you could get the Key of b?
5) How do you use DMute to your advantage (I never used it) and is it related to any of the above?

Now then, back to the game.........

Re: Race to the Ful Ya Pit

by Paul Stevens
1) No. The Onyx key was to get past the worm room on the
top level. I have a better plan now. I don't think it is cheating
to keep my FUTURE plans secret.
2) Push him back towards the Altar. He will die of transportation.
3) I used the "Misc" menu / "Items Remaining" while the game was
frozen ("Escape" key).
4) I tried to explain this once before. I even posted diagrams of the
logic behind the teleporters at the four entrances. I'll try again......
The teleporters all are off most of the time. There are two teleporters
at each entrance. The second teleporter takes you to the Key of B.
All the teleporters are on for just one tick of the clock, then off again.
So I put a screamer slice in the first teleporter. When it disappears
I know the teleporters will be off for a moment. I dash ahead to the
second teleporter and wait a couple seconds. Viola! There's the key.
5) I no longer use DMute at all. I used to use it to figure out
where the monster-generator pressure pads were. But I know what
I need to know now. And I used to use it to find things like the
"Topaz" key. But Version 8.0 of CSBWin (Misc/Items Remaining)
shows the locations of objects in chests and in the possession of
monsters.....so I don't use DMute. To use it you save the game,
Freeze the game, and use DMute to examine the game. By design,
this process leaves a permanent mark in the "Recording" that you
cannot distinguish from a "splice" of two games (save, die, restore
from save). That is why I am careful not to save.....I could be
accused of cheating. You can do it if you please because you do
not know how to splice two games together and therefore you
cannot cheat.

Any more questions? You might get this under an hour. You are
at least 20 percent quicker with the mouse. I have one of those
little buttons in the middle of the keyboard and it is very clumsy.

I think I just got the new record but wait for Pauls results. I think I spent way to much sleepin and my timing was terrible at the corbum pits.
Also, I was wanting to know, where do all the thiefs pop up? I tried using DMute but got horribly confused, arrows were pointing everywhere! These are location I have found.
1) At ROS where the fake walls are and the mummies behind the torch holder.
2) NETA where the munchers are.
3) NETA where the Terquoise key is.
4) KU in 'no fireballs'
5) KU in Mongor's lair.
6) Sometimes in DAIN where the teleporter maze is.
7) Dead thiefs stuff at starting point.
8) Dead thiefs stuff on the top level at 00,39,31 or nearby.

Where else do they and there stuff appear? This what I believe they carry:

1) Eye of Time
2) Lockpicks
3) Skeleton key
4) Storm ring + Onyx Key
5) Green freeze life box + key of b
6) Saphire key + Rabbits foot
7) Gold key + Ven potion + Waterskin
8) Blue freeze life box + Ful bomb

Even though the both lists are equal I can never seem to find every thing and this was a problem when I was racing. I think that if the thief in DAIN is not there then he might be dead on the top level at 00,39,31.

You are the new record holder. When I saw that you returned
to the start after collecting the NETA Corbum, I was certain that
my record was safe. But you beat it by about one and a half
minutes. You made what I consider to be very bad mistakes so
I think the record will be broken again. I will answer your other
questions outside of this thread.

The 'movie' of your record-breaking dash to the FUL YA Pit is
at
webpages.charter.net/pstevens1

Current results for the record:
Paul Stevens (Toadrot) 11 hours, 49 minutes , 20 seconds

Paul Stevens (Toadrot) 8 hours, 20 minutes, 11 seconds
Guillaume Bastard (Petal) 5 hours, 7 minutes, 8 seconds

Anthony Bracegirdle(Petal) 1 hour, 47 minutes, 28.8 seconds

I have the record again. See
webpages.charter.net/pstevens1

I cannot believe how fast Anthony manipulates items
and moves around the dungeon. He will break the
one hour mark easily on his next try. I think I am
within 5 minutes of the very best I can do with the
best of luck.

Current results for the record:
Paul Stevens (Toadrot) 11 hours, 49 minutes , 20 seconds
Guillaume Bastard (Plague) 11 hours, 7 seconds
Paul Stevens (Toadrot) 8 hours, 20 minutes, 11 seconds
Guillaume Bastard (Petal) 5 hours, 7 minutes, 8 seconds

All the latest movies are now available for download on the Clones page.

I'll try to keep the movies archive up to date as new records appear.

BTW, I must say I'm very impressed by the last records, just above 1 hour... That's a little short, for a movie!

Hello everybody!
I was about to get a new record under an hour. I all the corbums and I came up at the ROS entrance to the top level and on the maps at this site it says 'a skeleton key will open the door but lockpicks will ALSO activate the demon generator' unfortunatly it did not open the door just activated the demons so I got blown to bits (sob) :). I won't try that again, just maybe you could fix the mistake.

I think I just got the new record and it was probably under an hour aswell!!
I think it would take many many trys for me to surpass this record. The game was almost flawless with the only major thing going wrong being to back to the DDD from the ROS corbum and I just realised I could probably get there from KU.

According to the CSB Bible (ASCIIDUMP.TXT) the lockpicks
operate a counter. You have to click the lockpicks seven times
to open the door. I think.

I certainly did get it. It is at webpages.charter.net/pstevens1
filename = CSBMovie13.zip. And Christophe will undoubtedly
add it to the movies on the clones page within a day or so.

So you can compute the times yourself.....you did this in 17164 ticks
of the clock. Those are sixths of a second. 17164/6 = 2860.6 seconds.
That, folks, is 47 minutes and 40.6 seconds. No more need to
specify hours. Who would have predicted such a thing????

You played beautifully below the DDD area. At the DDD area you
played miserably. Terrible. Terrible compared to your play before
that point. If you fix this up you can easily carve another
five minutes off of your time.

But you will get no competition from me. I cannot go that fast.
Before you got the Boots of Speed you were moving around the
dungeon at three steps per second. That is better than I can
do. After you got the boots you were moving around at six steps
per second. And your item handling speed matched your foot speed.
A lot of your game looked like it was being played in 'Quick' mode.
We need younger blood. I am too old for this. Maybe I should become
a CSB coach!

Antman,
Paul was right about the lock at (00,47,24).
It can be opened with Lock Picks if you use them 7 times.

I'll add this remark to the notes on the map page.

OK. Here is what can be done if you are a Superman. I cheated
and finished the game in 22 minutes, 19.0 seconds.

To do this I saved the game many times and restarted from the
saved games when I made mistakes. I also used the Clock x 100
feature in the Misc menu to enable me to press keys at a
sustained rate of 3 to 6 per second. (That is per second of game
time.) Anthony was able to do this for short periods but not for
very long. I could never do it at all so I HAD to cheat.

The movie does not belong on dmweb because it is not a valid
game according to the rules. But the movie is at
webpages.charter.net/pstevens1 CSBMovie14.zip.
It shows what is possible. It contains version 8.2 of CSBWin if
you would like to try cheating. It removes all manual dexterity
and allows you to take your time in making decisions. It ain't
CSB any more. Let us call it the 'Thinking Man's CSB" (TMCSB).

Wow.

I used to watch my dad play DM and I think he beat it a couple times all the way through, my sister's gotten to level 8 or 9, and I've personally made it to the third floor beneath the Hall of Champions, but none of us got anywhere in CSB. I can't even get past those stupid purple (magenta) worms at the very beginning.

I've been watching your "movies" today though. Woo, they are impressive. I showed my dad the current record-holder and he didn't believe it was in real time at first, til I showed him the others where you can actually see the player thinking in the actions. That last one ... dude, Anthony, it's like you're flying by on instinct or something, faster than thought.

You guys are all greater than me. Congrats to all three (it is three, right?) who have entries in this contest. I just might try playing CSB again, to see if I can make it past those blasted worms...

Hello everybody,
I just got a new record, about 40 minutes I think. It had quite alot of mistakes but some good luck helped alot. I wanted to see how many bad guys I killed while playing so I counted them:

Bad guys directly killed
1 mummie, 5 gigglers, 2 black flames, 2 skeletons, 1 demon, 1 coatle,
4 munchers

Bad guys killed by other means
11 mummies were thown down a pit, 3 scorpions were blasted by a fireball machine, 1 vexirk was killed by teleportation

I thought this was quite interesting compared with the other movies.

Antman's latest, record-breaking run to the Pit is recorded in
a movie at:

webpages.charter.net/pstevens1 CSBMovie16.zip

40 minutes 7.6 seconds. An improvement of 7 minutes.
He did it without the Boots Of Speed so playing it at normal
speed looks rather - uh - 'normal'. He made at least two or
three minutes of mistakes. There is still room for another
record. But you better be quick.

Ooooh I was so close! I was in the DDD with 4 keys of B and the Ruby, Emerald and Tourquoise keys after just 4800 ticks (13.3 minutes) but the pit to the Ros entrance wouldn't close. I still do not understand why. I had pressed the crack switch, thrown something on the pressure pad gone downstairs, teleported a skeleton through (which got electrocuted) pressed the eye switch but it stayed shut. Anybody know why? It usually opens! Time to investigate... but I am very annoyed. I am sure a sub 25 minute game was on the cards if the Chaos lair was being nice!
