Okay I just looked at those other two skins... Codex Dark is a bit, kind of, meh...bit harsh on the eyes somehow. Subsilver is booorrinng...it looks like other forums I've seen rather than being the nice unique DM Forum layout. I think I'll stick with the fact I've been sticking with Chronicles ;).

I got used to CodexDark - it is
the skin I have atm.

Subsilver is ok, too. I used it
for quite some time; no
trouble switching back again ;)

Concerning chronicles: new posts
are imho a bit harder to spot than,
for example in subsilver -
therefore I do not use it.
edit: cows set:
I like the blue dungeon master logo
because it is the right size and
looking cool!

At the risk of me sounding too much like, well, me:

What exactly has to be changed in EVERY SINGLE SKIN so often that it's such a pain, anyway? It seems like some pretty bad design if the software doesn't assist in migrating to new versions when you have custom skins!

Will my idea of having auto-generated "skeleton" files work at all?

It's not the skins themselves it's all the modifications -- "plugins" to the code, such as quick reply, etc that must be updated.

Also, if phpBB add their own new features, then you need to edit the template files for all the skins you have installed.

It's simply a pain in the ass.

Anyway, it's also because we're still waiting patiently for phpBB v3 which is taking ages to arrive -- it's skin management is vastly improved.

Frankly, the skinning/template system in the current version is quite sucky.

If doing without codexdark and chronicles
helps to ease life, I'd say let's stick solely
with Subsilver then (until phpBB v3 arrives)

Seems to me to be the right thing to do.

Updates and Maintenance are maybe
more critical than individually appropriate
skins.
And, as said, it is not for eternity.
