I like cats and I'm usually nice to them. But in the case of putting up with nasty cats, I shoot them with a rubber band.
Don't get me wrong, I don't like being cruel, they have to really earn it. But one cat comes to mind and I'd just nail the thing with a stinging hit on the side of their body and it worked wonders for making it correct its behavior.
Make sure you're a good shot though so you don't hit their face or anything. I can shoot flies from across the room. Most of my friends scoffed upon discovering I had a bag of thick rubber bands instead of a flyswatter, until they saw me shoot.
