Re: DM themed play-by-post D&D game : STORY THREAD
Haynuus' response would have been the opposite to Ameena, and keep his mouth shut. As Ameena had afore-noted these humans disregarded most other races, especially those that looked the most different. It reminded Haynuus of his painful and brief experience in human society. Yes, living with orcs was brutal, but he'd survived by bartering and slaving away. Living with humans, which lasted around 4 months was worse in the ways that humans either ignored him or immediately treated half-orcs with disdain. He had such high hopes of a better life with humans, but it was the curse of his high expectations drew him away again.
So, Falkor had indicated that Gholst was not nice. We can assume that Falkor was being frog-marched like a prisoner to this Soorec, and the rest of them as well. Action was required but the moment was not now with so many soldiers around.
The theif though... Maybe Ameena was wrong to blurt out the truth, as his memories slowly returned he recalled fleeing moments with Westian earlier in his dreams. Maybe they DID know him. "I think I know this so called thief you talk about" Haynuus stated with his finger in the air "but I don't trust him as I would not trust you either."

Re: DM D&D game offhoot: Aurek's Adventure
Aurek now has 3 people to find: Fex, Westian & Darcow... then he remembers that he's trapped in a small cell with no apparent easy way out.
Aurek almost jumps out of his skin, when the apparently lifeless body suddenly bounces to life, before saying "Hello there, my good sir. My name is Aurek. Might I ask the same question in return?" and, after waiting for a response, he says "I'm here looking for someone. What, might I ask, are you here for... if you can remember?"

"If I can remember? Do I look so bad to your eyes?" says the man self-consciously, dusting down his tunic and drawing it straight. "My name, sir, is Farel Somnuth, of the same noble family of Varette. I directly serve the Baron as one of his knights, although in these apparent times of peace I have taken my leave to be a knight errant for a year."
The man's eyes cloud for a moment. "I too seek someone, although it is my fault that I do. I have started training a squire, a good lad at heart. With the murmurings of strange disappearances around these parts, I took the opportunity to come to Mount Anaias. I thought it would be a treat for the boy, and besides there is none more knowledgeable than the Grey Lord."
The knight sighs. "There was no-one to greet us, which is strange in itself. We waited in the Hall of Champions, and I educated the lad on some of the heroes insofar as I knew of them. I should have taken my leave back to Viborg to inquire there, but perhaps I wished to give the lad a sense of adventure. I knew of a way through the mountain's paths that led to a keep the Grey Lord sometimes uses."
The knight casts his head down, shaking it. "We were captured by strange black-armoured warriors soon afterwards. They took us in through a secret way. They said they were under orders from Theron, at this trying time when the Grey Lord was missing. However I believed not one word of that, for the decor of their armour was not one to inspire confidence."
The knight checks his own door and listens for sounds before continuing. "I caused a disturbance to demand seeing Theron, enough to allow my charge the chance to escape - which he did. Though what chance I have earned him, I have no idea, and it seemed it was not my time to face a reckoning for my actions. I was knocked unconscious, and awoke here in what must be a few days ago at most. Occasionally one of the soldiers will come and give me the barest amount of food or water. They do not taunt me with details on my squire, and I dare not ask and reveal a weakness to these curs."
The knight looks into the middle distance sadly. Then he recovers himself, and after another look towards the door stands up and comes across to he grate. His walk is proud and he does not seem to bear any weakness from his incarceration.
"There is no guard posted outside. I believe these soldiers - whoever they are - are spread thin in this mountain. Also, something else strange. Their actions are crisp and speak of discipline, and yet they seem to be terribly ill-informed of each other's actions. One time a guard will tell me the small mage will have interest in me, the next time a different soldier will taunt me that the dark priest will be sure to have words with me any day now. I do not know what this means, but I see it as a possible advantage when we escape."
The knight looks intently at Aurek. "So what of yourself? You would not happen to be a thief, perchance? One with the tools of his trade stashed on his person. I cannot suffer this cell, both the dignity of my family and the shame at the charge I have let down will not allow it, sir! A single choice is a terrible thing to regret, is it not?"

Re: DM D&D game offhoot: Aurek's Adventure
Aurek thinks about the situation... "Farel, have you given your cell a good look over? I've checked mine out, and there seems to be no fruitful method of escape..."
In the beginnings of a steadily building frustration, Aurek beats into the door as hard as he can muster (1d20 = 17)... takes a breif rest, then attempts to pull the grate loose, applying every ounce of strength that was up to the task (1d20 = 14). The whole time, screaming and yelling in an attempt to attract a friendly person (1d20 = 12).

Re: DM D&D game offhoot: Aurek's Adventure
Questioning his companion, Aurek receives a shaken head in reply. "There are no hinges nor handles nor locks on those doors. I am not the strongest of men, but I did not feel the door move when I tried lift it. As for the bars - even if I had the strength to shake them loose or an implement to slowly wear them down, they would only lead to your cell."
Sir Farel looked to the door. "I fear the only way through is through the guards, but they are well armed and always make sure one is covered by the other when I receive my food."
Aurek seeks to damage the door through any means, but as he had worked out before, the door was magically protected aswell as secure in its dwarvish mechanism. Certainly he prefered finesse to brute strength, and did not feel matched to the task of matching blows with the solid timbers of the door for long.
Aurek took a moment to recover, then turned his attentions to the grate. Sir Farel raises an eyebrow and backs away with a bemused shrug as Aurek yells for attention. It was certainly not a tactic he had attempted, although the apparent manic gestures perhaps worried the knight about his new neighbour.
Aurek continued attacking the bars with as much leverage as he could muster, but nothing moved. The grate's bars were thick and solid, and were solidly wedged. Again, the bars seemed too fresh not to be magically reinforced.
Aurek had yelled until hoarse, and there had been no friendly replies. However, as one of the last echoes faded he heard the metallic clumping of multiple footsteps marching in time.
"Keep your noise down, knight!" yelled a voice with metallic echo, "I had not thought you eager to draw the gnome mage's gaze!"
There was a dull thumping sound, and the door infront of Farel moved upwards into the ceiling in a swift series of clanking jerks.
"Watch yourself, lad," said the knight to Aurek standing up and facing the door.
"Why now do you - WHO IS THAT!" A soldier stands in the door, dressed in black platemail, with upraised shapes resembling skulls. His helm is shaped as a black skull aswell. He had started to move in, but had glanced sideways and spotted the paladin immediately. The soldier took a step back, and gestured to his companion.
"Two prisoners? When did this happen?" said the first soldier to his companion. The similarly dressed second soldier shook his head and raised his shoulders. The first soldier looked back to Farel, as if it was the knight's fault.
"I do not have time to shuttle back and forth for two prisoners, especially if one no one has told me anything about." The soldier takes a small bowl of water and part loaf of stale bread and turns to ignore Aurek.
"And if this new prisoner is important?" asks the second. The first soldier freezes. No expression is visible, but the eyes deep in the helm sparkle with irritation.
"Fine. Split the rations. We are too deep and too busy to do otherwise." The first soldier breaks the bread in half and hands one part, and the bowl, to the second soldier.
The first soldier stands at the door to the knight's cell, keeping one hand on the pommel of his sword and the other hand holding the bread.
"Close the door," says the second soldier.
"Do you job and don't be distracted by mine," snaps the first soldier. The second soldier gives a look across, but does as instructed and hits something outside. The wooden door to Aurek's cell finally opened.

And map just to orient you - you can see the room beyond the guards seems to only go on for about 20 feet before ending in a wall. There appears to be some external light source (probably a torch sconce) somewhere outside
Removed as I accidentally over-wrote it with the next map!

Re: DM D&D game offhoot: Aurek's Adventure
Aurek decides that jumping the guards is the best course of action. His primary move would be to try to get to the switch that opens the adjacent cell (1d20 =
. Then, using the possible help from Farel, they might be able to overthrow these guys, and escape (initiative roll 1d20 =
. But, if the guards happen to notice him, then attempting to fight them, and moving slowly to the switch would be best.

Re: DM D&D game offhoot: Aurek's Adventure
Despite guard 2's comments to shut it, guard 1 has left Farel's door open and is standing trying to see guard 2 and ensure Farel's good behaviour. The grate between you both is not, despite the CSB shorthand, a door, it is just a grate so cannot be opened. Guard 2 is currently standing at the door offering you a water bowl.
If you attempt an action, you can be sure Farel will jump at the chance to take on his guard or die in the attempt
So you'll need to deal with the guard standing in the doorway. Did you want to punch/kick the guard, or attempt something else (such as grapple with him to stop him moving)?

Re: DM D&D game offhoot: Aurek's Adventure
Aurek decided to make a move, although it was apparently a move the guard had expected. The guard moved quickly and threw the bowl directly at the paladin's face but the throw is a clumsy one to distract him and flew passed the paladin's face without harm. The guard then moved backwards to the door button outside, drawing his sword in the process. As Aurek drew close, the soldier stabbed at the paladin with his weapon but Aurek nimbly dodged out of the way. Aurek himself cannot do more than bruise his own hand though, as the guards's platemail has few weak spots.
The moment the paladin had flinched to move, however, his fellow captive had moved with relish against his own guard. The first guard had split his attention, and was caught seriously unawares by the movements of both the prisoners.
Farel had made the distance in the blink of an eye, yet did not attack. "Yield, you cur! I would not kill if I do not have to!" the knight said instead, perhaps following some old fashioned code. The action seemed madness, and the bewildered guard instantly acted on his training drawing his weapon.
However, it seemed that was exactly what Farel had wished. The weapon was now free to be grabbed, and with expert moves Farel did exactly that, a quick set of blows that ended with the sword in the knight's hands pointed at the guard's throat.
The guard blinked for a moment at the turn of events, and decided discretion was the better part of valour, making for the switch outside aswell. Both guards perhaps would share a look, one berating the fool for not following protocol, the other still in shock at the reversal of fate.
For the prisoners, they had their chance!
And there we go! I won't usually do this, but I will repost the above including the rolls I did. I will also describe the action that you, your ally and your opponents took in combat mechanical terms to you can get the feelfor what is happening. Please feel free to ask any questions there. Otherwise, carry on with round your next round's worth of actions!
Be aware the guard you face will be acting ahead of you, so watch yourself! I will post an upfdated map in a little while, but you and the guard are outside the cell, the other guard outside his cell, and Farel is still just within the door of his.

Re: DM D&D game offhoot: Aurek's Adventure
Map:

Guard 2 should have acted first, however he notice that guard 1 has lost his weapon and will be yelling at the other guard to move out of the way. Farel's readied action also reduces his initiative to acting just before guard 1.
So therefore, nicely for me and you, that means Aurek is first in initative order now. Stupid guard 1, or rather stupid me for putting the guard there. Tactially studpid, then again, I'm not supposed to be doing tactics, so it's all good
Torch sconce is in the middle of the upper wall with a torch flickering in it. The back wall seems to have various scrolls and other odd assortments of desks and stuff. The buttons are sort of visible on the lower wall.

Re: DM themed play-by-post D&D game : STORY THREAD
Everything was happening fast, and for whatever reason they wanted to take him away - which seemed strange, what had he done??? Ameena's quick talking was also of concern, he felt far more vulnerable and concerned that the soldiers would now see them as a bunch of defensless "monsters" stumbling from one encounter to another...
One thing that did strike him as strange though - the Theif, they were prepared to release him to us, and only apprehended him because he did not reveal who he was... given how they felt when they awoke in this place, perhaps he was unable too... but, if they are prepared to let him go then surely their motives are not all hostile.
"I'll come with you - however, can you give assurances my friends will come to no harm?"
He didn't like the idea of going with these soldiers, but lets face it - he didn't really have a choice! Anyway, he thought, perhaps they may even help him leave this place if he does all that is asked of him - they hadn't killed the "Thief"!?!?

Re: DM themed play-by-post D&D game : STORY THREAD
Westian listened intently as Ameena spoke. Although he would have preferred to keep these people in the dark about some facts he was glad that nothing directly contradicted what he had said. Still, it was a change of emphasis that might make their new-found friends feel that they were hiding something, so he spoke to try and bridge the slight gap between the two versions of events.
“Yes the Trolins we encountered, I presume they were the remnants of a group you had been chasing. We killed one, although they had a disconcerting habit of simply disappearing in a puff of blue smoke when beaten… A second disappeared in a similar fashion before we had a chance to get him, and a third fled. We followed him down here, but I assume either you or the mummy got to him first. As for the mummy, he attacked us as we descended and we had no option but to defeat him.” Westian hoped that this language would show both that they were not unnecessarily aggressive but also that they were competent if the need for battle arose.
He noted that Falkor agreed to travel with the group to meet the mage, but Haynuus had not replied yet. He looked over at Haynuus with an inquisitive eye, to see whether he seemed willing to do the same. While Westian had a well developed talent for self-preservation, it would not extend to handing a companion over to armed and dangerous strangers against his will. If it came down to a fight they would just have to be ready.
Deciding to ignore, and perhaps brush over, that detail for now he responded to the captain. “Yes our halfing will accompany you, and maybe we all will follow” he added, looking at Haynuus and Ameena for confirmation. “As you say it is dangerous down here, so it might be best if the four of us stay together. As for the thief, I would certainly like to talk to him.”

Haynuus grunted... Honestly, he learnt early on in his life that it's the most positive response an orc could give.
Re: DM D&D game offhoot: Aurek's Adventure
Don't worry, that's a decent roll!
"Move out of the way!" yelled the guard being engaged by Aurek, spotting his unarmed companion's state. However, the first guard was still overcoming shock at the enormity of the slip.
Aurek took advantage, and easily avoided the hastily jabbed sword blow the guard attempted to keep the paladin back. Aurek's blow was strong, and again stung his hand but this time the pressure of the blow to the man's helm seemed to transfer through and stagger the guard.
"Lad, take this!" yelled Farel. The knight had come out of the cell to press his advantage on his own guard, but had apparently spotted Aurek's predicament. Farel carried on running towards the torch sconce, throwing the sword to the paladin in the process perfectly.
Roll me a dexterity check please to see if you catch the sword. Lukcily, Farel's done all the heavy lifting for you and thrown it well, so a DC5 check suffice to have it in your hand. If you fail, the weapon is on the floor by your feet and you'd need to use a move action to quickly pick it up (provoking an AoO). Either way, possessing the sword will let you do 1d8+1 lethal damage!
Sadly, the guard by Aurek showed his training, already shaking off both the previous blow and the surprise to quickly push another jab directly where the paladin was reaching for the sword. Aurek this time was hard pressed to turn out of the way of impalement, and received an painful slice across his chest (LB, you take 5 damage I'm afraid!
The guard beside Farel finally came to life, his own training and anger overcoming his chagrin. However, the guard misjudged the distance and grabbed empty air when trying to stop the knight from going for the torch.
And there we go, another round done! And now hopefully in the next round, you'll be armed
Good luck!

Re: DM themed play-by-post D&D game : STORY THREAD
As Ameena talked, there was nothing but silence from the soldier.s The men previously, now identified as sergeants, seemed to shift and look at the rest of the group and then each other. The captain himself seemed to keep turned to Ameena. Ameena could not discern much from such armoured men with their faces hidden, however something about the captain just seemed unfriendly.
There was an uncomfortable pause in the conversation again as Ameena's tumble of words and admissions were allowed full time to sink in. After she finished speaking, no one seemed to keep oriented towards her nor be inclined to answer any questions she posed.
Haynuus filled the silence with his own comments, and there was small shake of the captain's body that seemed to coincide with a slight noise. Had the man just stiffled an laugh? The sergeant identified as Arbrut turned to regard Haynuus as he spoke. He, too, seemed unfriendly.
The Captain turned to Westian to speak when Falkor spoke up. This time the Captain's body did tilt to regard the speech of
the mage, as did the sergeant known as Thinpas. Arbrut did not seem concerned with the words.
"Assurances?" asked the Captain, some odd inflection in his voice that unfamiliarity and the metallic helm had difficult to identify. There was certainly a glint in the man's eye, visible through the slit by the torchlight. "Since your pet and slave cannot recall whom they are friends with, I would be remiss in making such a potentially wide-ranging promise. The dungeon is a dangerous place with the Grey Lord gone. I can only vouch for your own relative safety should you come with us. Certainly safer than not. Any whom you consider a friend, if they stay within our reach, will also have less to fear."
Again there was the tension, for the Captain was not directly threatening and his words were certainly capable of innocent
interpretation... and yet the words were what they were, given the dress of the warriors. More importantly, the Captain's last words seemed to have an expectation to them, as if he were waiting for the halfling to say something more.
Westian stepped in to break the tension, again chosing his words carefully to undo some of the potential damage done by Ameena's speech. The soldiers did seem to regard what Westian was saying carefully. After the cleric's first explaination, the Captain turned and shared a look to Thinpas. After Westian finished his speech, the Captain seemed to nod, and there was a motion in both his body and that of his sergeants that showed that the matter was settled.
"Indeed, the four of you would be safer coming with us. I am glad that is decided. Please, if you have any possessions I would ask you gather them, and let us depart for Soorec at once. There are still Living to worry for. As for the thief - I would not worry for his fate, I think you have been instrumental in explaining his behaviour. I would not dream of keeping you separate."
The Captain turned and gestured for the soldiers he had sent to the floor above to come back. As one had stayed at the base of the stairs, this had been easy. The two of the soldiers and Arbrut go into the temple to watch out for the movements of the party, while Thinpas and the two others stayed with those outside the temple.
The captain went back to the Ra door, apparently to summon another soldier beyond and speak with him.
Ok, under the watchful gaze of soldiers you can gather all your possessions. If you wish to speak together, you can either do so out in the open but know three soldiers will be listening to you, or you can try to subtly speak together when getting your gear, but that will require a Bluff check from anyone speaking.
While Westian is outside of the temple, Sergeant Thinpas infact makes a point of coming over to him and commenting on something from earlier. "Lord Chaos created monsters from nothing, or from the ehcoes of existing creatures when he ruled here. The Grey Lord chose to allow them to live. Now he is not here, you will find those abominations are dying. Those are the thuggish brutes and wrapped dead you would probably have faced here. Beware as we journey. Chaos twisted those already with life, and pulled in existing creatures from inside to populate his lair. Some of those chose to stay here under the Grey Lord. The Living. I would not advise you to engage them, should we come upon them. They will not die so cleanly nor so easily."
Arbrut seems uneasy at this exchange when it happens, however the party are motioned to go soon afterwards. Thinpas moves to catch up with his Captain, and the press of four soldiers behind the party, headed by Arbrut, encourage the party to move on after Thinpas.
Beyond the RA door is a simple anti-chamber, 30 feet square with an opening in the opposing wall apparently leading to a similar room. The ceiling is lower here, about 15 feet high. There seems to be a bad smeel wafting from the previous opening.
Used to the dry smell of - at worst - death in the previous hall, the new smell of mildew and something rotting is unpleasant and unsettling. The floor and walls seem caked with more dirt than the hall before.
There is a sound behind the party. Sergeant Arbrut has come in alone, almost but not quite closing the Ra-keyed door behind the party with a simple pushing down of the door with his hand. It would appear the four soldiers in the other room have gone back to guarding the door by the stairs once more.
Thinpas and Arbrut take position on either side of the party. Up ahead, at the opening to the next chamber is Captain Drommel and another black-clad soldier.
"Look to your feet when you step through to this chamber," says the captain, "there are obvious pressure plates on the floor - a trap or puzzle of some description left from the days of Chaos. They are easy to avoid. Do so."
With that, the Captain turns to walk in, while the two sergeants and the soldier obviously watch the party to ensure they too begin to move. The party are finalyl advancing deeper into the dungeon, although certainly not how they might have imagined only a few hours ago.
Ok, so we'll stop here just for people to get their breath back. Anyone wishing to do any checks, etc feel free. If anyone wants to retro-actively take a chance and question Thinpas as he talks to Westian, go ahead.
Ameena, I know you mentioned using Sense Motive on the other soldiers, you can do this during the packing of the group. Anyone else is free to run any checks they like.
Similarly if anyone else wants to run any checks on the surroundings or your ... guards, yes.... at any point, please roll the appropriate check and describe your actions.
Anyway, the only update I really need is to know whether everyone is going to heed the Captain's warning, or if someone is going to try anything. If you want to be sneaky about it, I will need either a bluff check, sleight of hand or thievery depending on the action.
Otherwise, just post any retroactive actions or simple reactions to what is going on, and let's get you seeing some more of this beautiful dungeon, shall we?

Re: DM themed play-by-post D&D game : STORY THREAD
Ameena's ears give a slight twitch at Drommal's use of the terms "slave" and "pet", apparently referring to herself and Haynuus, respectively. Having already detected a distinctly unfriendly air from this human*, she decides further that she wants even less to do with him. He seems to be exactly the type of person she would normally try to avoid.
But on this occasion, unfortunately, it seems she has no choice. Still, this could work to her advantage, she knows, though she doesn't quite see how the human arrived as his reasoning. From what she's learned out in the world, some species keep members of other species as "pets", to treat as they wish, whether kindly or less so. But pets always seem to be non-sentient creatures like the ones known as doggs or hurses. No, wait...hoarses. She doesn't quite see how the human could consider her non-sentient. Unless he thinks that she is the slave, and Haynuus the pet, since he hasn't really spoken yet. Either way, he seems to consider them both as some form of life inferior to his own. She has encountered such attitudes before. Many times. They can easily be turned to her advantage. After all, if a creature is "stupid", considered incapable of reasoning, logical thinking, or proper communication, what is the harm in being a little freer with information around them, or paying them less attention? She rather hopes these people will make that mistake - she might be able to learn something useful or sneak around and acquire something they can use to get away from these people. One thing she's sure of - if they do know of a way out of this dark place, they're probably unlikely to share it. Though asking them about such a thing would be a simple matter, she decides that none of those present are currently worth talking to. She hears the threats within the formal words, as well as the tone of voice being used, and decides taht if she were a member of another species right now, she would probably be rather annoyed at the way she is being spoken both to and about. She also notes that Drommal so far only seems to consider Falkor and Westian worth speaking to.
Well, then. She knows Haynuus doesn't have her hearing, otherwise they could probably carry out a whispered conversation from a few steps away, mouths, hidden, and not be heard by these low-sensing humans. She'll have to wait for another opportunity - maybe they can put something together, some plan to "play stupid" and maybe turn things to their advantage.
She also notes that, with the arrival of some blatantly unfriendly humans, she suddenly feels somewhat closer to those she has spent time with in here - at least they don't seem to mind what she is, unlike these types. She could have woken up in a room with people like these metal-wearing ones, speaking to her like she's a non-sentient, or not speaking to her at all.
At the mention of gathering possessions, Ameena once again remembers her cloak. She doesn't bother to look up at the ones who keep an eye on her as she returns to pick it up - she knows they're there, watching her. She decides that she won't bother speaking to them now. Why should she, when she knows how they're likely to react, if they react at all? As usual, it saddens her somewhat, inside, to know that there are creatures who are this way, who view species unlike their own as so...well, inferior.
She picks up her cloak and puts it on, keeping her hood down for now so as to keep her ears properly free for listening to any noises or conversation she might hear. Then she goes back through the door into the room where the others wait.
As they are led through the other door, she of course sniffs and listens for anything which might be relevant to...well, to anything, really. Any slight noise or change of scent which might indicate something she might want to take notice of, though the ambient smell of...well, mould or something, isn't too pleasant.
When Drommal mentions the things on the floor, she looks down. What did he call them? Pressure plates? She thought a plate was something that many humanoids used to put food on - a kind of flat round thing so they didn't get their hands dirty while eating.
Hmm, that reminds her. She hasn't eaten for a while. She'd been planning to do so on waking up, and hasn't had a proper wash and groom for ages. But now isn't really the time, considering they're being walked through more dark stone rooms by some unpleasant humans. She glances around, looking up at the ones who walk on each side of them to see whether she can discern anything more about them.

Before entering the final chamber Haynuus the notes the words pressure-plates with interest and is as much concerned as to what they do than where they actually are (1d20=8). Any blundering half-orc is more than likely to accidentally engulf the front members of the now extended party in flames by wrong footing the trap...

Falkor was pleased the others had decided to come along, and as long we they were together he felt safer then if they had split up... still, who was this theif and when were they to meet him or her.. and he wondered what race it might be? Still as he walked with the others he listened to the captain, taking in all that was said all the while taking a mental note of the route - in case they had to retreat back to the alter of re-birth.
When they came to the pressure-plates Falkor did a quick examination - trying not to "second guess" the captain - but Falkor knew instinctively that these plates were sometimes usefull... sometimes not.
OOC: Quick Knowledge (dungeoneering) check (1d20=4)

Heh, nice to see you forward thinking money - I was going to start calling for Knowledge(engineering) checks for you to remember the route. Ian, a Survival check will let you know basic direction you are travelling instead.

(dexterity 1d20 = 10)
Aurek reaches out at nimbly catches the sword that Farel had thrown to him. And quickly attempts to turn the fight on his opponent, swinging as savagely as he could muster (1d20 = 14, if hit 1d8 + 1 = 5).

Re: DM themed play-by-post D&D game : STORY THREAD
Deciding there was no point wasting time Westian picked up equipment and got ready to move. Even though he knew they were all in the same boat he felt a slight stab of concern for Falkor and Haynuus: after all they had been singled out by name to go and meet this mage. Well, not even name, rather they were singled out by race. As he walked back to the temple he gave his three companions what he hoped was a reassuring pat on the shoulder. Nothing too dramatic to draw comment from the guards, but enough hopefully to reassure everyone that they were in this together.
As they began to file out of the room Sergeant Thinpas began talking to him. He listened carefully to what he said, and engaged him further in conversation in the hope of having at least one confidant among the soldiers. “I see. The Living…I have never heard of that name before. So you mean creatures that also exist outside of the dungeon? Such as dragons?” He spoke not solely in the hope of getting more information, but just as importantly to try and work-out the psychology of the soldier. Was his advice offered in a purely functional way, or did he seem to care about their welfare? He had offered the advice freely, was he simply chatting with Westian (which would at least prove some normal human nature) or did he have an ulterior motive?
“Also, do you know why the Grey Lord has disappeared, or where he has gone to? I realise that you may not be able to discuss some things with me, and I do not wish to make you uncomfortable, but I would be grateful for any information you could give me. You will appreciate I am somewhat in the dark here.”

Re: DM D&D game offhoot: Aurek's Adventure
"Gnyah!" comes the muffles response of the guard to Aurek's skillful blow as the force of it crushed the man's shoulder-plate, It dug the edge into his neck, drawing blood. The man staggered again affected, though his blade was held steady in warning.
"Fall back! Let others know!" said the guard, the tone of his voice odd.
LB, roll me a sense motive check please.
The guard kept his weapon up, and his eye on the paladin, retreating a step back without giving away an advantage then suddenly turning away swiftly and rushing into the shadows.
Farel had meanwhile already retrieved the torch from the sconce, and moved to block his guard from any escape. Farel's movements were more defensive and distracting than aggressive, but their unpredictable nature caught his opponent unawares. There was a scream behind the helm as the torch struck the guard's hand hard and no doubt singed flesh through the metal loops.
Farel couldn't recover the initiative in time to keep his opponent from making another enraged grab, but the injury and rage seemed to have affected the guard - he couldn't quite grab the clothing nor makeshift weapon of the knight.
And that's an easier round there! You scored a decent enough hit, though your opponent used a defensive movement 'withdraw' to get out of combat without you being able to attack him with an AoO. Still, he's in armour and has only moved off eight squares. You can catch him up with a charge no problem and still make an attack with a +2 bonus (though -2 to your AC for that round).
Alternatively, you can move to the opposite side of the other guard from Farel. This will grant both of you a flanking bonus (+2 to your attacks).
Since you have your running feat, you have a better chance of running down an opponent after a few rounds head start - especially one in armour - providing you know where he is going, and more importantly providing what he is running after isn't closeby!

Re: DM D&D game offhoot: Aurek's Adventure
Aurek takes to flight after his escaping guard, and (using run feat), covers the distance in a fraction of a second, and attempts to remove his head (1d20 = 18, 1d8+1 = 6+1 = 7, ouch!).

1 death is a tragedy,
10,000,000 deaths is a statistic.

Sweet mother russia! Well that's one good set of rolls! I do believe it's going to happen as you described it. Remember the sense motive roll for some extra information goodness!
