Brohur ripped his helm off, sneering. "Just wait until I had you back to Drommal. You snitched on your friends once, I reckon he'll make you snitch on your friends again. Especially that Half-orc and that half-pint wizard. That or he'll give give you to Seeroc, and you can have the same fate as your friend."
Brohur looked nervously behind Ameena to the noise of fighting, and so took a step sideways instead of forwards, clearly trying to ensure she could not escape without making an actual motion towards her to actually take her hostage. He did lift his arm, yet did it with resistance. For sudden;t, Helm was on his wrist, trying to stop him.
To understand why Helm had moved forwards was to know that WEstian was moving forwards swiftly, Petal keeping up with him on her wings. AS they passed the human, Petal had said, "help her!" Helm had not looked around nor seemed shocked, perhaps he had thought the voice just a mental manifestation of his own will. The thief had moved with surprising swiftness directly against Brohur, as if to pull the soldier back or perhaps even wrestle the sword from the soldier's grasp.
Of course, Ameena's words were proven true - Helm had no hope of doing anything ot the imposing soldier. His face turned, and there was a moment of recognition. "Liar!" he said, though clearly the words were addressed to Ameena, and clearly his glee was based on what he was to do next, for his face and eyes twisted in to an angry scowl.
Westian's staff appeared at once, and the half-elf a moment later. It shocked all around, Brohur most of all. Ameena had pulled focus perfectly for the two invisible foes to get right up to the soldier, and Helm's aid kept Brohur's sword arm stationary perfectly. However, Westian also realised that with his memories returned - and his odd alternate memories - his skills had improved since last he had met these soldiers. They were strong and skilled, but these were not the battle hardened legions Gholst had once commanded. At least, not the smoother armours soldiers like Brohur. Brohur's sword was smashed from his hand with skill, and Helm staggered back in as much shock as Brohur.
The blackskull soldier staggered back towards the room-wide pit circle, trying to keep the four figures in view. "I knew it," he hissed, looking to Ameena. However, all his malevolence and gleee had obviously turned to fear. Unfortunately, of course, the four has all opted for non-fatal means of confronting the soldier. That meant he was still free to open his mouth wide and-
The man's eyes crossed as his jaw was locked. It was as if an invisible force were holding the soldier's jaw shut. A moment later, Brohur's eyes crossed and he very slowly fell forwards on to the ground. Whether unconscious or dead was answered a moment later. Slowly a ghostly figure appeared in the air behind where Brohur had stood. To the side of that figure, n an instant, stoop Falkor.
Sir Farel - or his ghost, it seemed - stood and looked to the four heroes he had once stood with. In one hand a ghostly sdword was held, the pommel of which appeared to have been administered to the back of Brohur's head. "Aldur is safe with the elementals," said a ghostly voice, recogniseable and yet not as belonging to the once knight. "I paid a price I would gladly pay again for his safety, and yet...at a cost too that did not sit well with me. Not anymore." Sir Farel looked to Westian. "I saw you talk before and I felt I had acted correctly. Yet I saw you act now. I believe yur are a good man. I wish I could help more, already my concentration...it fades..."
Sir Farel shook his head, white whisps disappearing. He seemed fainter and fuzzier. "Cleric of Larethian, as you once guided me back to Ardur, now let me go knowing Ardur will have a new guide. His path was never violence. Perhaps you can show him new ways his parents would understand." Sir Farel then turned to Ameena, crouching down. His body became fuzzier still, wafing inside itself. "Ameena, I am sorry I will never walk with you outside this place, and speak with you of your people. If they are all like you, and all shirk violence, I regret I will be able to do nothing to help keep their innocence directly." Farel's legs and arms by now had become whisps, his body a strange cloud. Only his hand and face still retained its form. He held out the ghost of the sword, dropping it to the floor. It had disappeared before it hit the ground.
"Find the real item, a weapon yes but one blunted to show that violence never has to be the answer. Find it and my armour where I fell. At least take my sword back to my people. Tell them of your own people. Tell then Sir Farel Somnuth used his Death Oath to promise your people will be protected and championed throughout the four kingdoms."
Farel's face once more looked to Westian and nodded, before it disappeared completely as if a cloud blown away.
And there you have it, what happened to Sir Farel when he left you
I was actualyl going to hold him in reserve until the end of the game, especially given the hard line Westian was going to take with Brohur. And the idea was origianlyl going to be - afetr you guys took your lumps, and unless you came up with something much better, Falkor would have persuaded some of the other ghostly forces instead, weakening those and perhaps leading to a nastier ending of Brohur and the possibility of warning the rest.
Instead, of course, you guys managed a decent distraction, plus I loved Westian's chage of heart - noble or not is arguable, it seemed to justify Farel's help
Mechanically, Ameena pulled focus successfully, so I had her give Westian a stealth bonus, with the understandign that if it still failed, the AoO for disarm would have a +2AC bonus against it. Instead, sicne Westian managed great stealth, I decided that Ameena's actions stopped the AoO from triggering, and would also give a +2 to the disarm. I also had Helm attempt an aid another (narratively justifying him coming back to the fight) for another +2. Luckily, Brohur crapped his disarm resist, so down went once sword!
And I decided you guys had done enough that Brohur was distracted and helpless enough to have Falkor finish the matter off
And all without any party bloodshed, whihc, you know, I didn't think you guys would get away with.
Anyway, so there we go - temporarily, there is fighting going on right beside you fro mthe path fo reason by the soudns of it, but otherwise your way to the main hall is clear. I'll post a second post to bring the rest of the group - really just Haynuus, sicne I think Ian is back today or tomorrow - and then we can move on from there.
Sorry to say, I'll be distracted Sunday to Tuesday evening, so expect Friday/Saturday update to be a cliffhanger. Still, feel free to use the lull to talk tactics!
