A great site with emulated fruit machines:
http://www.fruit-emu.com/
You can play fairly recent ones that you have seen in pubs and clubs, or the oldies. You know, the ones you played when on a weeks holiday in Skegness when you were little, in a caravan, pissing down with rain, no tv, bugger all to do... but your dad would give you a handful of coppers and send you to the arcade and tell you 'not to come back for half an hour...'. Those were the days.

I downloaded a few machines and had a play today. I found it much more entertaining than I thought it would be with no real wonga on the line. The challenge of making a profit is still there, but I haven't succeeded yet. For example I couple I played on the JPM emulator where "Impulse" and "Monopoly 60th Anniversary". I got absolutely stuffed on Impulse finishing well down after a 20 minute session, then I thought I'd won handsomely on Monopoly but I was actually £1 down.
Yeah, I know the feeling! You tend to be a little more adventurous I think than RL. Most machines can have their payout percentages altered.
Fantastically, my local snooker club had one of the machines that I downloaded! I learned how all the features worked, went down tho the club... and still lost. Still need that lucky break. Both at snooker and on the fruities hehe.

I remember when these were first made available online (about 10 years ago or so). Someone decoded some of the ROMs and discovered that you *CAN'T* win. Not just statistically the odds are stacked against you, but that the machine actually ensures that you lose.
For example, there were some games where you had an (alleged) 50:50 choice between two buttons (say A and B). If you selected A then the code would highlight B as the "correct" choice and you'd lose. If you selected B then it would highlight A and you'd still lose...
Obviously when you were playing against a real machine you never knew this and just thought you were unlucky, but it wasn't until the code was examined that the fact that you couldn't win was discovered.
(From a libelous point of view, I should point out that this only applied to some machines; most of course were completely "fair", just that the odds are stacked against you so you were just unlikely to win!)

You can try tilting fruit machines, but generally an alarm goes off and you get ejected by a bouncer.
The 'no chance of a win' scenario has recently come to light again, with the new 'fair play' movement. I believe new machines MUST by law place a notice on the machine stating that there 'may be circumstances where a win is not possible'. Yes we have all been there... high/low on an 11 seems to suspiciously roll in a 12 more times than it would by chance.... BUT! We don't complain when the machine rolls us in bonuses, no lose situations, guaranteed wins, invincible modes. I guess these would be taken away if all machines had to operate on just chance, and the 'playability' of the machine would drop. I have more than once won over 100 pounds with these super modes, and all for just a couple of pounds in. I hardly bet anything, just tend to be incredibly lucky!

I remember seeing that page before. The scenarios can generally be recreated on any of the machines with the emulators (it allows you to save your position!). The biggest 'cheat' I saw was when I went low on a 12. It spun me a 12 and I lost...
Also, machines that are full of money are more likely to pay. On one particular machine I knew (another version of the infamous monopoly) you could peer in between the reels and look how full the money hoppers were. If they were high, with coins in the feeder tubes, it almost always paid a big win!

I rather liked that but I'm not sure why - perhaps it is supposed to allegorise the futility of life? This one just proves that our brains have a severe design flaw...

Now this is just amazing: Coloured Bubbles with Disappearing Colour.
It's a long article but well worth the read. It really made me feel quite emotional -- something about the persistence of the human spirit. And potentialy thousands of fantastic new products to boot.
