Lol Saumun - in context, they're pretty much the other way around from what you said. The first one occurs during an argument between two characters while the second is a joking sort of comment made by someone else earlier on. Okay, here's another (hopefully more obvious) quote from the same film...

Nope. And there are lunatics, I mean real lunatics in the woods, not soldiers. It's a classical 1970s war movie, full of stars, epic.

EDIT: Ummm... technically, as a non-native speaker, I noticed... shouldn't it be either a "stab in the back" or a "shot in the dark" rather than a "stab in the dark" (or a "shot in the back" )?

'Stab in the dark' is a pretty common phrase in England (it is in the north west anyway. I can't speak for the whole country)... Meaning to take a broad guess. Basically the same as 'Shot in the dark'.

Wow, thanks. Boy, you do learn something new every day! And a "stab in the dark" is easy to remember - will always remind me the starting room in the CSB.

OK, so let's give you another quote before I tell you the answer:

"Why do you always carry that umbrella?" -- "Bad memory. Never could remember the password. Knew no Jerry would carry one. Had to prove I was an Englishman, you see."

If it helps, my quotes involve both American and Scottish accents - the American-sounding ones are the "thousands of them" and "all of me" quotes, both spoken by the same person. Within the setting, though, you'd really expect this person to have a Scottish accent, along with all the other people who don't.

Either we're running out of the commonly known movies or we simply watch different things. Honestly, I don't follow the modern movies, and I don't spend much time watching TV / going to cinema. I'm only crazy into older TV series - the various British comedy series like Monty Python, Yes (Prime) Minister, Red Dwarf, IT Crowd etc... and detective series, like Hercule Poirot, Sherlock Holmes (I mean the 1980s one with the most excellent Jeremy Brett), Columbo, etc. I've got most of them in DVDs collections and I know these series backwards.

Well, I'm with you on most of the British sitcoms. Film-wise I tend to prefer animated/Fantasy stuff, so I watch a lot of Pixar, Dreamworks, Disney, etc. It's probable that you haven't seen the film I'm quoting from so I'll tell you - it's

Jan has just named some of my favourite comedies ever
Particularly MPFC and Yes Minister (and Yes PM). Red Dwarf too... Especially the earlier series.

A clue to my quote... It's a movie from the 70s, and is famous for a couple of reasons.
But again, they're only easy if you've seen them.

Saumun: OK, I didn't know your quote so I checked it on the internet - I've seen this movie but only once in my life and it was a long time ago, so no chance there to remember that line. Honestly, it's and excellent movie of course, but a little disturbing - I prefer movies where I can relax, laugh, shake off the anxieties of the day and all the troubles and serious things, escape from reality, have some fun; and so this kind of movies is not exactly what I enjoy... but again, it's excellent, no doubt about that.
