Grabbing one of the torches of the floor as he moved passed, Aurek moved through the now open door...
Upon hearing Farel's message he responded with "Farel, what is wrong? I can assist you..."

seeing the various traps, buttons and pressure plates Falkor thought it best to check for anything out of the ordinary as Haynuus made his way towards the Farel charactor... in any event, this seemed what he was best at... other than scaring and attacking people, the sadness was being taken over by self pity.

OOC: Checking for more traps Falkor rolled 1d20 and got 18 => 18

Sorry, forgot about your darksight there, will update for Haynuus's better view when I get back home! Plus can updatye again since you've all put in some actions. I'll just have Ameena and Westian fall down a pit if the timings go too out.

did I say pit...I meant..fall down into a picnic.

Westian slowly approached the odd glow. Should he call out? Ameena could be close by, unless she had left at very high speed. But calling out could attract unwelcome attention in a place such as this. He was suddenly horribly aware that he was alone. It was easy to walk into danger when there was a group of people at your side, but now every noise made his heart beat faster. “Ameena?” he called out in a loud whisper. “Are you there?”

Re: Ameena IC thread - Riddles in the Dark

Post by beowuuf »

Ameena's dizziness passed, although she had a strong memory of speaking to Falkor in a tavern. Had the halfling who apparently conjured fire so casually and calously been so friendly previously in the strange past Ameena still couldn't quite remember?

Ameena could nto recall more. All she recalled was one scrap of conversation...something someone (Falkor or someone else) had said at the time.

'I'm sure an adventurer said there were giant rats living deep in Anaias. Do you know them?'

Ameena did not have too long to think on such an odd memory - confusing, but perhaps hopeful? As suddenly there was another discharge of the teleporter. Ameena was hidden in the half-shadows of the corridor, although how hidden she would be to elven eyes was a mystery still.

It was Westian who had stepped through. However, the glow that Ameena thought she had seen perhaps drew the cleric. He moved towards it instead of looking around, and disappeared around the corner.

Had Westian said her name, or had she imagined it? Did it matter?

There you go, that's the results of your will save and . Westian chose to go towards the glow, so the stealth versus perception roll isn't needed now, unless you want to quietly do something. Note that moving more than half speed can ruin a stealth roll, so a running jump will either not be quiet, or would take a penalty from low speed. On the other side, on all fours Ameena can still take a decent running jump at 20 feet of movement, so at least not incur that penalty.

Obviously, you could instead move towards him - either with speed, or stealthily.

Technically speaking, Westian stayed out of the way of the front rank attacks, but he will still be bleeding from a shoulder wound he did not cure, and will of course have ministered to both Haynuus and Falkor (twice).

Aurek couldn't not make out the exact figures in the corridor, nor make out what they were saying. The torchlight infront of his face was ruining his eye's ability to see in the dark. His hearing however was temporarily ruined byhaving a half-orc yell 'Cooooeeeyyy!!!!' loudly by his ear, even helmed as his head was.

Aurek's call out was answered in a half-snap by Farel, the man's voice riddled with consternation. "Just...stay back. The soldier has one of the others help prisoner. If everyone can just stay calm, we can resolve this as men of reason, not of action..." The last trailed off, as if not directed at the group anymore.

Certainly, Aurek could hear the uncertainty in the knight's voice. The man had, after all, lost a squire already to his own actions. He perhaps had a particularly strong desire to not have the death of whoever Helm actually was on his conscience at the moment.

I have a sneaking suspicion that, without Westian, you the straight talker of the group here LB!

Haynuus, with his orcish eyesight, could see the situation a little clearer. While Farel was partially blocking the view, the soldier that had run out was just visible beyond. However, he too was mostly blocked from view by a third figure - it appeared to be Helm. The man was alive, however the thief did not look in a good way. And not just because Helm currently had a wicked looking dagger firmly tucked under his neck.

Helm looked on his last legs, and surely it was a strain to stay upright and not have his throat accidentally slit by falling. No wonder Farel was scared at anyone blundering down!

Ian, roll me a perception roll for Haynuus, please.

Falkor had been distracted from looking down the corridor by checking the door for traps. While nto a rogue (as far as he knew) by trade, Falkor still hoped he would be able to spot subtle clues that might trigger and harm his companions.

Almost as if his mind were trying to distract him from dark thoughts, Falkor spotted something unusual in the pattern of the doorway. His mind was afraid at first, for there seemed to be some odd discolouration - like scorching - around the doorframe. Some evidence of a trap, like an energy discharge?

Then Falkor looked acrossfrom the door - on the opposite side, directly across from where the secret switch had been, was a keyhole. A RA keyhole. Suddenly, Falkor had an odd feeling in his mind, as if something deep in him was yelling for attention.

Hey money, roll me a knolwedge (dungeoneering) check just for fun, would you. No pressure, but this might be a fun roll to make :D

Ok guys, update up...now you know what Farel was doing all this time, and what Helm was doing - basically, he was trying to run as quickly as 0hp allowed him, and sadly, that wasn't even fast enough to outrun two armoured warriors! :(

Anyway, Farel has been trying his best, but he ain't the hero of the story and he has his own demons to work out. So yeah, at best he's been treading water and at worst he might have made the situation volitile (I was running a skill check challenge in the background, hence why how fast you solved the door mattered. Don't worry, while rolls will help I think this needs to be a tactics/roleplaying solution to the problem). So, how bad the situation is, and in what direction, is for me to know and you lot to hopefully not find out because you solve it. Good luck, don't let the thief die if you can help it :D

Ameena looks around from her investigations of the pit's edge, and is somewhat surprised to see Westian having emerged from the blue hazy thing. She watches as he heads toward the strange glow emanating from somewhere around the corner, noting the wound around his shoulder. She wonders whether anyone managed to not get themselves covered in blood. She recalls what she knows of clerics, and wonders whether he did anything with the dead - she has some memory that clerics tend to stand over dead bodies and for some reason say things which sound as though they're telling that person's already-departed spirit to have a safe journey to wherever it's already gone. Something like that. Maybe he cleaned up the mess on the other side of the blue telly-thing.
Already slightly curious about the glow, but also unsure as to whether she wants to approach the half-elf, Ameena nevertheless moves away from the pit slightly. She isn't sure what she wants to do. She thought she heard Westian say something - had it been her name? She wonders why she feels slightly surprised to see him - maybe because she can't think of any reason he would have come back than to look for her, when they've shared so little time since they've met. He's so far seemed to prefer the company of Falkor, though she now realises that's most likely because the halfling is a magic-user too.
Amena decides to sit and wait for now, to see what will happen. She is curious about the glow, but isn't sure what will happen if she lets Westian know she's there. And apart from anything else, heading in that direction means heading back past the stench emanating from the blue thing. Yuck.

Westian felt a deathy chill enter him, as if something had snuck passed his senses and was tugging at his soul. He realised at about the same time as the deep spiritual shiver struck him what the glow was.

It was the ghostly girl again.

Hey, you failed your will save and get to see her this time! Woohoo! So yeah, lose 1hp non-lethal damage to the whole soul-tugging wackiness of her existence. Because you've been caught unawares, and have seen her before (ish) you will be able to perceive her ok this time.

However, gimme a perception roll for other reasons, please :)

The ghostly girl's prescence seems to illuminate the area with a dull white light that, to Westian's eyes, is more than enough to see by. Already Westian realises that the swift movements of the soldiers made the passageway deceptively easy to navigate. On his own, he has but turned one corner and alreayd the cracks and fissures in the wall are hard to distinguish from the continuation of the corridor.

Wrecked walls, covered in a fine web-like stickiness, seem enticing exits at each turn, but who knows what lurks inside each. Or what danger from simple crumbling rocks.

The ghost girl is apparently looking towards one of those fissures, and one of those collapsed areas. Had...had Ameena fallen foul of one? Was she buried inside?

"I can see her. She can't have long to go," says the ghost in an odd sing-song voice, not looking up at Westian. However, Westian knew the spirit was aware of the cleric. Her emotion - sadness - was echoing in Westians emotions in an unpleasant way.

Was Westian too late?

"Can't you hear her?" asked the spirit, "she's so worried...you have to hurry!"

The urgency was creating disturbing feelings in Westian, he felt himself being drawn into the spirits emotional state, which seemed to be getting worse.

Roll me another will save. If you hit less than a DC10 you'll have a -1 penalty onto any checks you make. If you make a DC20 check, you will break free of this odd connection.

Luckily, Westian at least spotted something about the pile. He could not see any limbs nor accutriments that would belong to Ameena. Instead, Westian could spot two odd slender tendtacles with some form of sucker on the end - one of which seemed burned. They appeared to come out of the pile. Was it some odd creature underneath the rubble? Or...wait....could it be the rubble?

And I love having you roll dice! One final time, can you roll me a check - a raw intelligence check, this time. [/quote]

Wrong thread :D Friggin' good roll though, you certainly nailed it!

Aaaaand mod powers exercised, put in the right place. Weeee!

Falkor's brain instantly put the pieces together, even though he felt dizzy. Not the dizzy of the odd memory spikes, just the dizzy of the enormity of the realisation.

Ra key hole? Doorways with this precise scorch marks around it with electrical discharge? It wasn't a trap...he'd never heard of such an odd trap in his research tat would worn such consistent patterns into the doorframe and floor. And certainly, the surroundings and doors had changed slighty, but Lord Chaos might have altered it on a whim, or the Grey Lord might have altered it afterwards. After all, wasn't it rumoured the Grey Lord had opened areas of this place as a pilgramage for mages and priests to come to?

If Falkor was right - and just some feeling in his bones, just the sheer volume of information he knew about Anaias told him he was right - then he knew exactly here the party had been teleported to.

No wonder the mage was supposed to be based here, somewhere. The party was standing at the entrance to a place that the original champions had fought a whole dungeon to earn passage into. Even without the item that gave it it's name, this place was historic, and more importantly thought to be one of the areas of Anaias where the Grey Lord had used as a library and laboritory, a place that held great secrets.

For this could only be one place, surely. This could only be the fabled Tomb of the Firestaff.

Surprise! I was gunna see if anyone spotted it when they went exploring later, but good perception at the door and good knowledge roll, and I thought 'why not spoil it now' :D!

Ameena hears the familiar voice of the woman-shape and belatedly realises why the glow seemed familiar. This time the woman-shape seems to be speaking about a "she", and Ameena wonders who that might be - probably someone else as yet unknown, since the only female creature she's seen down here, apart from herself, is the woman-shape. And it seems somewhat unlikely that the woman-shape would be talking about herself in this way. It sounds as though this new "she" is perhaps in some kind of trouble. Ameena almost wants to run forward and ask, but for numerous reasons decides not to.
Of all the possible things she could do right now, one thing she decides she just can't put off any longer is eat, even though such an action seems like a rather odd one to engage in, given the current situation.
Pulling out some food, Ameena crouches awkwardly and eats a little, though not at much as she might normally - she's rather too distracted right now to properly enjoy food. She drinks a small amount of water too, but again, not too much. All the while she keeps alert for anything else which might occur, and tries to find a way of standing which is remotely comfortable - such a thing seems impossible at the moment, however.

Haynuus knew exactly what to do. In case of attempting to persuade, cajole, bargain or barter - keep your mouth shut. He faired badly communicating in the domain of the orc's yet he always got his message across. Yet with humans shop keepers tended to shrivel with fear if Haynuus tried to get a lower price for an item, or they'd call the town guard. Getting directions from the local militia was a nightmare as they'd throw him out of town for disturbing the peace. His low charisma (as in disfigured and difficult to communicate with a larger than life tongue) and low intelligence meant that he said the wrong thing, at the wrong time in the wrong way.

He had to do something to save poor Helm though. Whispering to Falkor - "Psst. They wanted YOU. Maybe you can bait them into hanging him over? Tell them you need to see this Gholstie giza and you don't know where he is. They get in trouble if they don't take you to him!" The halfling, obviously cleverer and more persuasive than the half-orc, sucked on his pipe for a second, hard.

"Please be careful with my Helm!" shouted Haynuus to the soldier. "He's got a high THAC0 and it might be contagious!"

The thought of handing himself over to the soldiers was not one he cherished - but... they had ended up in this mess because of him, he owed them that... He looked down the corridor and shouted "It's me you want, if you let him go I will come - but no harm must come of Helm or more blood will be spilt.. The choice is yours"

His heart sunk... even though he knew this was right, he didn't know that this would make up for the wrongs he had started, or if these guards may just take revenge on him for the carnage he had caused... but it was the right thing to do. Haynuus, for all his strange thoughts and actions was clever enough to know this was the right plan...

And yet - just finding out that they were at the Tomb of the Firestaff - it was like christmas coming early, only for all the presents to be taken away...

Westian summoned the courage to once again speak to this spirit. "You can see her? Do you mean Ameena? The ra- I mean, the rat-like-creature?" Panic started to envelop Westian. Maybe it was sharing thoughts with a terrified and terrifying spirit. Or maybe it was fear for Ameena's safety, and his own.

When the spirit looked at the cave-in Westian's sense of agitation increased. Oh gods, I hope she is not dead. And I really, really hope that I don't have to go into any dark crevices on my own.

He looked more closely at the rock-pile. At first he thought it naught but a pile of rubble, but on closer inspection a pair of red tentacles appeared. With a very rapid heart-beat and shallow, ragged breaths Westian edged closer to the rock pile, without getting too close to the spirit.

"Who is there? Ameena? Ameena?"

Westian's sub-conscious was working hard to push out the influence of the ghost woman, and with a moment of dizziness he managed it. He felt the link sever before the feelings overwhelmed him.

However, he tried to ensure he could still see the girl clearly, and also hear her. And so he realised that, oddly, he recognised her. It took a moment to work out exactly why. She resembled the Grey Lord's apprentice, Theron.

Luckily with the severing of the link to the spirit, Westian's mind was also able to clearly see what was infront of him. Luckily, or sadly, it was not Ameena - she was still lost. What was under the pile was...well, what was in the pile was...

No, Westian had heard odd things of the dungeons under Mount Anaias. Surely what he was seeing was an animated pile of rocks. A rock monster, such as Haynuus had one referenced. And to his mind, it was not a healthy looking pile of rocks - if such a thing could be said to exist! The tentacle seemed lethargic in its movement, and Westian would swear he could smell the scent of mana in the air. It was the same smell that the Trolins had given off just before they had disappeared into nothingness.

Was this rock creature dying?

The spirit had not answered his own questions he had asnwered previously. Funnily, instead the spirit seemed to answer the questions he was asking himself.

'No friend in the ruins.
But a great treaure hid.
The contents so precious
The container, no lid'

The ghostly woman seemed to have translucent tears running down her cheeks, and was trying to stroke the damaged tentacle of the creature to soothing it, to no avail.

Heh, sadly, a general knowledge check won't let you know the rock creature is poisonous... though it will let you know it's a rock creature :D

Oh, Ameena, you'll hear the riddle, though of course you won't know Westian has no clue how dangerous the rock pile is. After all, for the moment he's hanging back :)

Aurek yelled out to the soldier, "Look... I'm going to come in there with my sword sheathed. I don't want any more bloodshed, please let us end this peacefully. I do not want to harm you, but, if you harm your captive, then I shall be forced into action, and I REALLY don't want it to come to that." and at that he sheathed his sword, and slowly walked into the chamber, allowing the soldier to see that he was not being threatening.

Farel takes a step back as the rest of the party start calling down the hall, allowing a slightly better view of the soldier and his hostage. To Falkor and Aurek, the soldier and Helm form an odd four-legged creature of shadow, a torch somewhere in the distance not highlighting them that well. To Haynuus, he could now see the pair perfectly.

"I don't want you, halfling!" yelled the soldier to Falkor. "The mage can have you if he wants you. How do I know you won't murder me when you get bored like you killed the Sergeant? Damn the mage, and damn Gholst too! I never took up the Souls! I never signed on for such being the lackey of underlings! Gholst has lost it, and his lieutenants are all freaks and religeous fools now who can't organise a binge in a tavern!"

The soldier seems to be yelling uncharacteristically hard at that, and even those without the gift of Darksight can tell the man is shaking.

When Aurek makes his statement, the soldier obviously pulls up the knife harder into Helm's throat, causing the thief to wimper. "Come no closer!" yells the soldier. "You, get back! he yells to Farel. Farel, too, seems to balk for a reason at the paladin moving forward, especially when being asked to retreat. However, something about the paladin seemed to allay the fears of Farel. Similarly the soldier seems to be cowed into not making rash moves as the paladin - still dressed in the armour of another soldier - walks slowly forward.

"Please," says Farel in a quiet voice as Aurek and he pass each other, "find out where my squire could be held captive if...no, as he must still be alive. Please."

"Please," repeats Helm as Aurek gets close enough to make out features.

No pressure LB :D Did you decide to take a torch, or are you completely unarmed?

Also, if you guys think you are going to do something risky (stealth movements, etc), or if you want to make some passive checks such as perception or sense motive, then please roll d20s as normal. However, otherwise, I think you guys deserve to be completely off the hook in this regard. Feel free to simply RP either your actions or responses as you have been doing, and let's play this out the old fashioned way, shall we! No fate but what you make!

After all, the dice play between Helm, Farel and Marhman might have screwed you over big time already :D

Luckily, it's Wisdom based, so close to a DC15...

Haynuus could perhaps work out why the soldier was shaking after his declaration. It wouldn't be from refusing to take the halfling, after all the Captain had agreed with Thinpas.

However, Haynuus from his limited experience knew that Big Bad Bosses really, really did not like underlings saying bad things about them. Certainly, they tended to hit people who said things like that in hearing distance. And those were the nice Big Bad Bosses!

Was there a way to exploit a disillusioned soldier, or did that make him more dangerous still?

That reminds me, I ran out of brainpower yesterday to type something up...

Ameena hears Westian caling for her, then the woman-shape speaking again, and at the same time realises that not only is Westian walking toward the woman-shape, he's also moving in the direction of that strange rock-creature she's already encountered.
Whatever opinions she might have on the half-elf's personality and motives, she is certain, as she has always been, of one thing - that she doesn't want anyone to get hurt.
She moves forward slowly, approaching the corner and coming to stand a short distance behind Westian, still standing on all-fours but with her left hindpaw raised slightly off the ground. She sees that he doesn't yet seem to be close enough to the rock-creature for it to touch him.
"Be careful." she says, quietly and without much energy. "The tendrils are poisonous. Don't get too close."
From this distance, she can more or less angle her head to look up at him, so, wearily, she does.

Aurek responded to the soldier by stopping (a little closer to the soldier than Farel, but still out of swing's reach)... and then spoke "Okay... please, calm down. I don't know who Gholst even is. I don't know this guy you've got by the throat either. I don't want any more aggression, can you please lower the knife? I'm sure that you know you're outnumbered here... should you do something aggressive, I'm sure that it won't go too favourably for you. Lower your weapon, and I'm happy to let you leave. Or, if you want to get even with this 'Gholst', whoever that is, you can come WITH US if you want. This doesn't have to end badly. Please, put the knife down..."

Upon hearing Aurek Haynuus puts his falchion on the floor. If nothing it was a symbolic act.

Aurek and Haynuus seemed to be doing everything they could to show they wanted no more blood shed - Although Falkor knew that they would have a harder job trusting him, and he couldn't exactly put his "hands" on the floor... he did what he thought was best...

"Listen, I realise you have no trust of me or my friends, but I'll honor this truce - remember - you were "leading" us to Gholst, not the other way around. I'm sure you know your way round this place better then most - and could perhaps leave before Gholst catches up with you or us! Use this chance to leave.."

Falkor took the stance that having 2 soldiers join the group would most likely end in trouble - perhaps when they slept they would get revenge or if more guards appeared they would quickly turn and it would make the numbers less favourable - so for them to leave seemed the best option in Falkors mind.

“Ameena, you are alive. Good.” His voice still showed a hint of fear, presumably from the encounter with the spirit. Keeping his eyes focused on the unusual spectacle of a ghost tending carefully to a dying rock monster, he started backing away, whispering to the murafu as he moved.

“I realise that the fight may have been shocking for you. Is that what is bothering you? The fight? I won’t pretend it was pleasant for me either. We can talk about it if you like. Just how about we move away from here and closer to the teleporter, the blue haze. I will not force you to do anything you do not want to do, do not worry. Let us simply talk – if you tell me how you are feeling I will listen.”
