Ahh, not all of us are good at it...some of us have the guide book with all the maps and stuff

.
I just can't spend ages training like that (by standing in one place casting endless Fireballs at the wall or whatever)...it's just SOO boring. I'd rather be making progress as I go. Saves food as well...my team never actually use their waterskins, and I have stacks of food...I'm still getting through the bloody Screamer slices on, like, level 9 or something.
If I need a rest (which isn't very often), I just go back to the room near the end of level 9 and med up there and have a drink and stuff. And usually on the floor between two sets of stairs (on the central stairway) I dump a massive pile of crap I've accumulated and need to ditch - arrows etc mainly that I have no need of but kept in the early levels for my back people to chuck at stuff.
It doesn't matter if it takes you three hours or three years to finish the game...as long as you have fun doing it. I suppose it'd be really frustrating if you got stuck somewhere and couldn't finish, but then, that's what we're here for, eh?

sometimes there is a challenge, and sometimes there is boredom though!
for example, the tiggy game i started i deliberately walked the first mummy back to the first gold key door, managing to kill it one step away form being trapped - fun!
also ran into the final two mummy groups room and took them both on at once, swingign and gluggign stamina potions all the way - fun!
but on level three, pullign out a monster at a time fro ma room and walking around swingign a sword for a few poitns of damage...sooooo boring : ) gotta balance these thigns out if you take a weak character...or 'weakie mcvie' as i called her : )

Hi Im new here, but I still remember everything about this game after 17 years.
after beating the game legitimately, I began to experiment with the
different parties you can form.
I remember using the mana necklace in combination with a staff on a character with 2 or less mana, so they could cast a simple spell and level up magically
otherwise, they will never be able to use magic
Also, I took apart my old controller when I was about 12 and I put a relay on the fire(attack button), set the mouse to highlight punch, and plugged it in, put a book on the button. Then I automatically gained ninja levels, becuase it was like modern "rapid fire" continuously punching.
So yea, you can punch air and level up.
I totally agree that if you are hitting a monster, you will get more experience

As for attacks like berserk, it's really meant to be used against enemies that have a lot of armor. Of course, this makes hardcleave preferable to the inquisitor due to its armor penetration, and diamond edge is pretty decent in any case.
How do you see the damage statistics on certain weapons?

dmweb.free.fr
Go through "items" and "skills" should give the statistics.

Or download Rain's ADGE:

Works on CSBWin graphics files. Easy to use editor, it shows pretty much anything. And a great weapon in the arsenal of the dungron designer.

Correct if I am wrong, but I have also noticed that the level of the spell is indifferent for earning experience. It is the spended mana points that count. So it is just the same to do lots of small spells than few big ones.

I played DM at the university CS guild room while back. Not really speedrunning, just didn't bother to stop anywhere. I was down at scorpions after about 1.5 hour of play and some people who had gathered late to watch wondered why I was bashing and evading the scorpions instead of blasting them with Mon fireballs... When I told them that my best mage (Tiggy!

) could barely do Lo fireballs they looked at me like I was a crazy person. Which I guess I was compared to "casual" DM players...

i tend to push mana into priest levels first, even on my main mage - so offensive spell wise i tend to be quite wimpy half way through the game
i forgot to say it earlier - nice to have you back toni! : )

How about Mana potion? Of course you need somebody to create them...[/quote]

I'm wondering about he hidden skills. They are not described at all anywhere. Someone mentioned high defense hidden skill to evade most of the monster hits.
So, anyone knows what attack raise what hidden skill?
And also: when you level up, doesn't that raise all skills incl. the hidden ones?

You will find what attack raise what skill here:
Dungeon Master and Chaos Strikes Back Actions
For the moment, hidden skills are just numbered in the table. However, the
Dungeon Master II The Official Strategy Guide contains the real names for each of the hidden skills (see on page 4).

well, yes, but are they realyl worth it? I'd almost bet they should raise with my visible level too... the defense thing someone mentioned is quite interesting though.
looking at the dm2 book, Im getting confused. 4 warrior skills: swing, thrust, club, parry. Which is associated with what attack action?

One more thing: is there any way how to set up something like "autofire" under WinXP with the original DOS version of DM? My arm hurst already, and I'm not even expert in 2 professions lol

Working my way towards 1st master level lately. Also trying the shield way of gaining warrior levels. What confuses me is I'm not doing ANY damage with the shields at all. And I'm quite sceptical about the hidden defensive skill. Or how long do I need to bast monsters with shields until I can notice any difference?

There is an armour bonus for just holding it in your hand. There is an additional armour boost, I beleive, for usign block. USually in the overall scheme of thigns defense isn;t noticed so much that tyou would go 'thank goodness I had that shield'

That's my view on it also, defense was never something I noticed even in the slightest while I had shields equipped... but then maybe others have, and I just didn't play long enough with them in my hand.
I'm a put-random-object-in-other-hand kinda player anyway, so even if there WAS a noticeable difference I'd be reluctant to give up my flask/compass/rope/key/horn hand

I was talking about the "shield training" of warrior levels and the hidden defense skill someone mentioned. Someone posted that using "block" trains some hidden "general defense" skill or smth.
I don't understand this thing too well tho. It's pretty logical that the higher my hidden weapon skill is, the more dmg I can do with associated attack. But don't I do anyway with more levels anyway? I mean the shown "titles".
Hope I'm not confusing you with my weird english, hehe

It's just one of the four fighter skills, that aren't explicitly shown, relatinbg to the shield attack *fighter 5 I believe)
It's like saying 'yes, now with nija skills I totally see my punches doing 100 more damage'
Everything is having a subtle effect, but possibly nothing you'd miss...and possible, in the case of punching, nothing that isn't overshadowed by having 170 strength from potions, for example
Similarly, defensive caluculations and armour can get dwarfed by general high fighter/ninja levela (maybe) and definitely good dexterity
But then, every little counts!

I have seen this page of course

But looking at it once more, I don't understand the X profession Y. X obviously is the skill used. What's Y?
Kind of hard to tell how much to train particular skill when I can't see any number. I spent whole expert->master "blocking" screamers. It's much more brain-eating than simply killing them, lol.

Use CSBwin and create portrait charatcers with experience added to the four skills as you like to see the effect
The poitn of the game isn't stats really, which is why lots are hidden I guess!

I guess I am the only one who doesn't like CSBwin

I rememeber downloading once some time ago (2 years?), and I couldn't get it to work at all. Somehow, I managed to enter a dungeon, and after about 10 attempts to play I gave up as I was getting some kind of error after few steps all the time. hehe

I am afraid you have not supplied enough information
for me to have a good chance of fixing your problem.

CSBwin is fantastically easy to play, I forget where it was developmentally two years ago, but I think it was fine and stable
As long as you have CSBwin.exe, graphics.dat, dungeon.day, config.txt and...umm...I think that is it...in a folder, it should run
