Save up the '3' roll for when Lord Chaos attacks me with daffodils and Haynuus needs a pollen allergy save!
Re: DM themed play-by-post D&D game : OOC thread
Aww, you guys guess all the plot points!
And Falkor's clarification made me laugh
I wonder if Westian will be sad he doesn't get to see a grisly death...

Re: DM themed play-by-post D&D game : OOC thread
Ok, I forgot to mention that next week (actually Thursday) my mum is down for her birthday, so I'll be distracted until Monday evening.
So definitely no game next weekend, hopefully I can keep a hand in around that weekend but if I'm a little slow, apologies in advance! Updates might be late at night or early in the morning.
Ok, so just to know ahead of time, so you want this weekend off, or do you want to have weekend updates? We seem to be working on Monday-Friday updates with weekends off as a standard, but just wanted to double check incase you guys are in the mood to go over the weekend when able

Re: DM themed play-by-post D&D game : OOC thread
Since you've all replied, another update up. I'll be busy at work today, but we should be able to sneak in an evening update if you all have the time today!
Still pleasantly surprised by your combined rolls, I had assumed with the spread of luck there would need to be one interpreter and another who was in danger from this conversation so caution would be needed and some panicky first aid. Instead the worst you have is Westian kinda lout of the loop, and even then his will and knowledge rolls means he knows roughly what's going on, and the mechanics of the spook to boot.
Not one to begrudge you your successes, just funny to plan on laying out some breadcrumbs and see you lot steal my loaf
The combined things you've seen and hints in this room should actually give you alot of puzzle pieces for a major part of the plot just now. even if the puzzle is one of those baked bean puzzles

Wooo, well, I have a big long theory about what's going on, but I'm not gonna say anything yet. Anyway, I think these things are best revealed in-character and I don't want to spoil it for anyone by blabbing here and possibly influencing future posts
.

Well you're a faster thinker than me, then.

OK, I have a theory, can I post it in the stroy thread? You go first if you like Ameena

Ok, I rolled a 3 + 3 = 6 for perception. I assume it was a DC 5.....right?

I have some theories about the story too, but they are half-baked at best and not based on evidence so I will not embarrass myself by posting them!
Re: DM themed play-by-post D&D game : OOC thread
You can totally PM me though Ameena, so I can remain stoically silent. Ameena, your track record of spotting things even when you don't realise you've spotted them is pretty good so far... three cases I can recall... but
And OB< you can post your so I can stoically laugh then
Ian, if you have a theory you can post it here, if Haynuus has a theory you can post it in character to start a character discussion.
No real rules, feel free to discuss the plot as players or have your characters discuss - after all, they should be separate anyway, and you can give ideas as players and allow the correct character to run with it

Ooooh, and let's not discount money's snuck in comments there in the IC thread. Indeed, how can two be one...
Glad you are all thinking, I will do my best to confuse the issue then throw another mummy at you ;p

Oh, and OB, the check was really just a standard action, I'm not tracking timing too closely if you have another action you wish to make. Maybe that's what accounted for the poor perception, infact
Just account for the lakc of lip-reading first then you're good!

Re: DM themed play-by-post D&D game : OOC thread
Here's a completely pointless observation: You've been playing for 8 weeks. If this was actually being played in DM in game time, you'd probably have been playing for less than 20 mins.
Amazing how the abstraction of DM gameplay makes for such a quick and speedy game, compared to a full story led role play. I'm impressed

Re: DM themed play-by-post D&D game : OOC thread
Indeed!
And if this were a tabletop session, I think we'd have finished one evening's worth.... maybe two
Anyway, I am sure players and observers alike will be completely fooled by the seemless ways in which I make a fourteen level dungeon become (initially) a 'four' level dungeon!

Re: DM themed play-by-post D&D game : OOC thread
Haynuus' thoughts, unpublished like his doctorate thesis about mold growth on leather...
Spoiler
Hayuus continued his unorganised and rambling thoughts.
Vayla, mentioned in the scroll, was Theron's wife wasn't she? Theron was the Grey Lord's apprentice... Hold on, we're talking about Theron of Viborg of course. And that undead mummy they destroyed was a Low Lord of Viborg as well. It appeared that this human lord was corrupted when that fiend Lord Choas set off his evil magicks many years ago. The inscription on it's tomb was "Your rest is assured while my protection remains." so what protection there was, had recently disappeared. Where was Theron now? Haynuus' memories of that silver cloak the Halfling had stored was infact the one Theron once wore? His head hurt.
The letter indicated that Veyla wanted to 'leave' and that she was suffering from a 'condition'. Was this ghost Veyla? Did Veyla pass on her condition to Theron? She said "He carries the ill." yet... Finally she said "One who are two, they must separate." - Is she saying that Theron and the Grey Lord should be separated or that the Grey Lord needs to become Lord Librasalus and Lord Chaos once more?
That last thought left Haynuus cold. Maybe both Theron and the Grey Lord were incapacitated and THEY were trapped with all of Chaos' minions, ready to expand through the lands unhindered once more.
And one last idea occurred to Haynuus. (Best keep his mouth shut about this last thought.) If Theron or the Grey Lord was suffering a condition, and if he and the other three were in the same dungeon, surely they... The, the mold... It was everywhere... They were doomed as well!

Nice theory. I sent mine in a PM to beowuuf, I can post it at some time later. Or better yet I can steal your bests ideas, combine them with mine and pass the result off as my own work.
Won't be around for the weekend. Plus it is a bank holiday weekend here, so probably won't be around on Monday much either. I will try if I get a chance, but don't count on it. I hope before I head off this evening I will get a chance to read the update and see who He is...
Have a good weekend everyone!

Re: DM themed play-by-post D&D game : OOC thread
Ok, we'll keep it light on Monday - Ameena has D&D late too I believe, so just make it a Tuesday update!
Should be able to update when I get home (work for a little longer I think), so hopefully you can see the results and the weekend cliffhanger
Will be working on the weekend, but will be around enough to answer questions. Money, if you are free we still need to get you some fun leveling up stuff added to your character!
And yeah, nice theory Ian - won't say which parts Haynuus has got interestingly right, and which he maybe has been (deliberately) lead the wrong way about
Ah, it's fun to be the DM

Oh, Ian, I forgot to say I believe whatever made you think Theron's cloak might be the same as the cloak Falkor has stashed in his pack were comments to Ameena. I don't think she's had the chance to share that yet... though as a player you know it

Re: DM themed play-by-post D&D game : OOC thread
Any theories I have, I've PMd Wuffy about it, just to let him know what I'm doing. Even if our characters weren't all currently sat in the dark with some kind of scary thingy approaching, there is a rather sizeable amount of information that Ameena is lacking in order to come to any of these kinds of conclusions herself. She'll be able to suggest one or two things once she knows what the letter says, but like I said, they're all sitting there in a dark room with a scary thingy somewhere outside, so fair enough that no further information will be forthcoming for a little while
.
It might need a kind of (IC) group discussion thingy so everyone can be brought up to speed on various facts - Ameena's not really very knowledgeable about the whole DM/CSB story at all, since anything she's heard has been heard in the form of rumours and stories from various random people over the past few years. Murafu don't tend to like believing things like that, preferring to actually experience things first-hand in order to know they're true (they trust each other though - while they know other races may lie about or exaggerate some things, murafu are always honest and will relay information exactly as they know it), so even if some of the things she's heard about, say, the Grey Lord are true, she won't just go on rumour in case it turns out to be wrong. She is fairly certain, however, that people like the Grey Lord and Lord Chaos are/were real (see her thoughts in previous IC postings), because they seem to come up in pretty much every story around that subject.
Aaaanyway...umm, yeah...so now Ameena's decided she believes the ghosty and has determined to do what she says. Hey, at the worst all she'll do is look a bit silly, right?

Wow, it's pretty cool to see everyone's ideas and what they latch on to. I do not think there is a single aspect of what has been presented to you that hasn't been interpretted in the right way by one of you. Of course, which aspect each of you has latched on to correctly I will leave up to group discussions or further revelations of plot.
Or, you know, me just dropping hints cause I can't help myself... one of those

Re: DM themed play-by-post D&D game : OOC thread
Heh heh, just a reminder that because of OB's holiday and Ameena's DM night, the next update won't be until late tonight at the earliest - and due to me being busy, more likely not until tomorrow evening.
Also, sorry, pulled a long series of work hours this weekend, so no background info nor rules put up from this weekend. At some point it will get done, then at some point I'll put them up
Anyway, so as Gambit pointed out, it's been almost two months now! How's everyone finding the game, and the commitment? All good?

Re: DM themed play-by-post D&D game : OOC thread
It doesn't feel like it's been two months already...then again, it doesn't feel like it's been taht long at club and I think it's probably coming up to that now. Wooo...I'm liking this game, anyway, and the murafu are a race I think I shall expand upon outside of it and maybe write stuff about. Well, knowing me, I probably won't ever get round to actually writing something about 'em, even though I have a few ideas...but I'll still think through a plot and stuff, as well as all the backgrond info on them
.
And I hope you'll tell us what stuff we've guessed, once it will no longer be any kind of spoiler for us Wuffy...I wanna know what things I've (accidentally?) managed to work out ahead of time

wow, 2 months. Of course it took a week to roll the character, and another week to get out of our state of embarrassment and exit the first room!
All good here. Enjoying it!
Edit: Also just read the background story to DM for the first time as well!

Re: DM themed play-by-post D&D game : OOC thread
Can i cast a light spell? Do i need to focus a flame on one of the extinguished torches?
Re: DM themed play-by-post D&D game : OOC thread
Sorry, I knew there was a reason I needed to post the spell infos - you can cast FUL now!
Ful is only castable into the air around yourself, not onto an object usually (although you could try to cast it onto the the magic torch if you really wanted). It will basically ignite every molecule the air around you, so you get a magical light centred on yourself.
As you know, there is a better version of the light spell. That might be more flexible...
And don't forget you could re-ignite the normal torch with a 0-level spell too if you prefer to keep your real magic for offensive spells...

I'm posting the FUL, FUL IR and VI spell rules in the house rules thread. Please feel free to say if something sounds over of underpowered. I've tried to balance the useability, how much you can cast these, and also the fact that I have a few options to how strong you will get how quickly.

Re: DM themed play-by-post D&D game : OOC thread
Just had a read of the post on the spell effects and had a thought - usually in DnD games, I think, AE spells/effects don't hurt allies. Will that be the same here or would Falkor accidentally burninate one of us if we happened to be standing next to the mob he was Fireballing?

Re: DM themed play-by-post D&D game : OOC thread
Actually, area affect in D&D in usually lethal to everyone - it's the exception not the rule to give allies a free pass out of them.
For the DM game, I'll just say one thing - walls
I think burninating your allies for firing too close is the spirit.
Note that the area effect of the fireball is spell level radius - it would need to be level three before it even intruded into the square adjacent if planted at the centre of the enemy tile (hitting the enemy), and level six if Falkor (or other budding mages) decided to plant the attack in the far corner of an enemy's square.
