Suicide

Perhaps a convenient suicide could be implemented to the next version?

Especially in CSB there are some situations, where at least I would load the game and try again than keep going. But the only way to load the game is to die (or quit and start RTC again), and dying is a painful business unless you are wandering headlessly in an extremely hostile neighbourhood.

I wouldn't ask for this if I didn't think this would be an easy thing to add.

ctrl-q or alt-q.. one of those is the quit button. however you can always just go to the disk and load again can't you.. or quit from there?

I see the possibility to make *real* (ingame) suicide (for example by fireballs, poison clouds, pits, doors etc.) is more realistic and funny. Clicking on "Suicide" button/icon is not so satisfactory I think :-)

BTW I found that several MON poison clouds do their job very good - my party is dead very soon.

The only ways to load the game are:

1. Quitting, restarting RTC (with all its loading processes etc.) and resuming at the dungeon entrance.

2. Dying, and pressing the restart game-button which loads the previously saved game.

Yes, a real suicide caused by party actions is more satisfying, but can be quite time consuming. Besides, there might be situations where party cannot cast hazardous spells (out of mana, no runes, the spellcaster(s) died which would be the reason for suicide). Falling down the pits, climbing up again with crippled characters is a pain.

I agree, but (at least from my point of view) using load/savegames cuts off the atmosphere. If you hear sound of Deth Knights' plate, trust me, your fear and other feelings are more impressive if you must face them and continue with all loses you gain (health, stamina, items and maybe some heros) than "I will just try it and if I lose some hitpoints, I will reload and try it again".

First I was playing RPG's with walkthrough and load/save 5x per minute (:-) ). Later I played it without walktrough, but with load/save 5x per minute again. But I found the real impressions and undescribing feelings when I was playing RTC-CSB (could not be saved, maybe you could now, but in the version I played it was not possible) and then I felt *totally* different than when playing with load/save option often. I agree that I discovered that fact a bit late (I started with RPG's about 10 years ago).

So (IMHO) the real player has almost no use for "suicide" button, because dungeons (and I love that fact) are not built with style "if you make an error, you can start from the beginning again". I am not so hardcore player so if a nasty dragon kills three of my heroes, I do not continue, but the last hero makes suicide and I load game again.

But this is only my point of view and maybe other disagree, but I am against "Suicide" button because of this reason.
And again for other players: try to play without saving at every corner and trust me you will meet the real feelings from the RPGs.

agreed..

I think I would have to agree that not depending on saving as a solution to any basic problem within the game infuses a greater respect for the urrounding dangers. After all, what fear do you have if you save once every few mins and then if something doesn't go your way you just reload...

Oh gee, I got hit that time while battling that rock pile.. and he poisoned me.. I guess I'll reload and be more carefull. BOOOOOOOORRRRRRRIIIIIINNNNNGGG!!

There are other solutions to things you mention, healing potions can be made by any party member. Altar of rebirth brings back the dead. mana potions can be made to help you in a pinch. sleep also assists in the regaining of health and mana.. all these things take time.. the walk back to the last rebirth altar could be a long one.. or it could be the next one is right through that den of purple worms.. which way?

don't rob yourself of the intensity that makes this a great game.

now, on the other hand. I think that be a way to drop to the load map/game screen after having played a little while.. most important reason being CSB... you go and pic your characters.. exit the dungeon and have to reload.. :( There are other legitimate points where it is required to quit and load a save point.. for instance a bug may have occured (obviously the software is not perfect yet) and you've lost an item you needed or a door won't open etc.

Yes, I'm aware of the misuse of suicide-button. It's just that when half, or even one of my party members are dead, there's no way I'll seriously continue that game. It wouldn't be a problem if I was in a hostile environment, but if I just happen to lose a character in a deadly enough battle but not deadly enough to kill the whole party, well... Besides, valiant heroes should not fear of cutting their own arteries in a desperate situation!

However, I also agree that critical situations are exciting, and they emphasize the dungeon atmosphere: sounds, signs etc. I didn't mean the suicide-button to be used as a "power-playing" shortcut enabling players to complete games without taking any damage or something like that.

control-q kills the whole game...then again, my computer and RTC are faster now so this form of reloading doesn't hold any horrors

At the moment all dungeons allow suicide quite easily - if your characters are tough enough to survive a door or pit then they should be able to ven thesleves to death double time

But maybe a suitable 'quit to the restsrt screen' should be included for:

a) ease of accessing the hint oracle
b) ease of escaping a new dungeon that puts you in an inescapable situation (dropeed in an oubliette) without a way out
c) playtesting, if you run around with super strong characters to make sure everything is hanging together...that always bored me having to ven myself for two minutes until everyton finally dropped, when I was just checking on tiny part!

Why not adding a reload button in RTC-DM and disabling it in the "original" mode?
