or perhaps George, you should consider using a different forum. One that is free? I use network54.com you occasionally get a warning at the beginning but you don't get pop ups like mad.

The pop ups are so bad here they actually bog down my computer.. I get anywhere from 2-4 popups just from looking at the next page and more come for every post I try to read..

anyway, something to think about.. plus network54 gives you voting booths and web space.. :)

It's 6 months at a time for CSC. We just need to get the funds again - I've put some in, anyone else? I think also that George needs to set a target again.

I doubt network 54 will last as a free forum though - most others closed down as they couldn't support themselves (insidetheweb for example). The reason ezboard has been so successful is that it's the best, has the best features, and is probably the most reliable - plus they have innovative features like CSC that allo users to contribute which is a great idea. Often when I go to your forum drake it's down for maintenance - regularly once a week for several hours - I've never seen that on any ezboard.

Like all things in life, you get what you pay for.

Alternatively, browse using Opera 6 which is fabulous as it has a 'Refuse popup windows option'... worth it for that alone, plus it's faster than IE. It's not fully standards compliant yet though (as I found to my annoyance when developing some interesting interactive pages for my new DM website which I have now had to shelve) :(

Yup, 6 month only

Yeah, I agree, sorry to go against you here Drake, but I have found only minimal problems with ezboard (like yesterday, dagnammit!), but I tend to check your forum out every day, and there have been alooooot of times that it has been down for maintainence

And I can try and get hold of one of those dirty things too, but still it might be worthwhile to get can a seperate pop-up stopper programme if you don't want to go the whole new browserr way. I have a seperate pop-up stopper installed, which means i don't have to yell at the dmj, and now rtc, noticeboards. It could be my imagination, but the one that comes with ie6 could still be fooled by some of the sneakier ones, i'm sure...

I think they accept paypal - which allows you to pay directly from your checking account - but I don't know if paypal has expanded much beyond the USA.

Also I am pretty sure that for renewal there is a 12 month option for $55 base (instead of $30) or something. I think they only offer it on renewal to make sure they are charging for the right amount of usage.

yeah yeah..

while agree there are times when the forum is down but it's not all that long and I rarely see it.

Still as I said it's free and down time is not intrusive.

There are problems with EZBoard too. I often run into a caching problem here. Where I will go to the board and it will say that there are new posts but if I go to look at them either it shows nothing at all.. or it shows the area as I last saw it. In otherwords I can't read the new posts sometimes. this happens almost all the time if I use my account here which is why I no longer bother with it.

Also there is the intrusive factor. Pop ups galore and this bloody "would you like to install gator" crap..

oh well, I'm thinking about researching other options for me. You see ZPC offered to let me use a forum thing that I think is part of his webspace. I may look into it again.. there is always a way. :)

Ironically enough, your ZPC webspace is down as I type this.... :(

In the great scheme of things, the costs for running ezboards using CSC isn't that much at all. If you manage to find a free option that works and is easy to maintain, then great. I still stand by the view that you get what you pay for though.

I have my own domain and webspace, cgi and all. I am too lazy, or just too busy with stuff I enjoy more, to create my own message board system. I went in search of a *good* message board script / program whatever. Most all of the free ones are crap. I find that for the features available the ez-board is definatly worth the $5 a month.

If you visit other boards that don't have csc accounts I highly recomend the CSC user account. Its about $7 for 6 months (bit more than a buck a month) and you will see no ads no matter what ez-board you are viewing. Very very very nice.

get what you pay for?

Take a look at where your money has gone Gambit. Notice how it says that you made a 20$ payment yet there is nothing in the comunity box. Shouldn't it say 20$?

I hope this is not a new nasty bug EZB has now that doesn't give you the services you pay for. You may want to send an email.

To drake:
I could have sworn I replied to this, asking if there is a database facility on the zpc webspace...if so, forums hosted there are a definite possibility

 don't panic. It takes them about 2 (working?) days to process a deposit. If by Monday afternoon/Tuesday morning or so it hasn't appeared then I would worry about it.

I'm not worried - I paid using Paypal, so i imagine there's a bit of electronic paperwork that goes on before the funds are credited. If it's not there by middle of next week though, yes, I will worry!

I'm still somewhat unfamiliar with creating or maintaining boards like this. So, does anyone have to pay anything for ezboard or is it free? If it is not free, who pays for it and do we have a community funds or something like that?

Ezboards are free to use and run, so therefore they use these annoying "£$%^& pop-up ads to generate revenue...I havbe no idea how sucessfully though!

The owner can choose pay to have no ads.
He can also set it up so people can gift money to the board, and they can purchase no ads that way (I'll need access to a credit card at the end of the month anyway, so try to contribute to the board for no ads too if no one else beats me to it...)
Or you can have your own community sponser account which i think means, amongst other thigns, you get to browse any boards free from pop ups (amaprotu is one, he can set that statement right if i misunderstood)

Or you can do what I have just done, and pay $12 for a year's individual CSC benefts, which removes all banners and adverts from every ezboard on the planet. Tis a great way to get the benefits for yourself if you know that others won't contribute to specific board's CSC programme...

There we go, that was the third option I was thinking about...only $12? cool

So what would be the cost for the site owner to have no ads?

It's $60 a year for full CSC (no banners, pop-ups etc.)

Well, we are several users who seem to really love that board. Maybe we could pool 60$ together?

There is already $20 of the $30 needed for 6 months in the comunity chest.

How can I contribute something to the community chest (I don't have a credit card)?
