What are they good for? What do they do? (Aside from improving your priest and fighter levels respectively :P)

If your priest is high enough level, certain monsters will retreat briefly when you perform these functions - gives you time to get an extra attack in! Even Chaos is scared of a little war cry.... The Horn of Fear does the same thing.

Most creatures are affected by this except ghosts, faders, animated armours, and demons. I have a full list somewhere, I'll see if I can dig it out.

Oitu's (giant spiders) are very susceptible, and I've noticed that if a war cry/brandish fails, it's best to inflict some damage before trying again

Coatyls are also very susceptible to Brandish. I never noticed War Cry actually doing anything to monsters, but your backrow baggage can actually gain fighter levels if you do it enough times.

I recall different creatures being affected by different intimidation methods: Chaos will not run from the horn of fear but will from a war cry, the irony being that as the monsters get tougher you need more powerful items to repel them, until the end, by which time you probably would have forgotten about war crying. I think. Anyway, what I want to know is, if the AI for "confusion" (staff of claws spell in CSB and also listed on a spell sheet somewhere on some website once upon a time - though the spell didn't work in any version of DM that I tried it in) differs from that for war cry and so on, then is calm also different, or do they all have the same effect at varying power levels, except for confusion? I vaguely remember confusion making the monsters actually go around in circles and look confused instead of running away as if they were dying.

I was soloing DM with Hisssssssa, and you know, his magic is weak area, but so what? I like the challenge...

Anyway, I was facing a flying snake, and I was backed up against a dead end. I almost panicked, then decided to raise horn of fear, and guess what? It work admirably. Yep, there are lot of monsters where horn of fear, war cry, etc etc works very well.

MutatedBlade42's quote for a while:

I might be wrong, but I seem to have noticed that party size makes a difference...a large party scaring big groups more than a smaller party. There was a skeleton puzzle with four groups neding fear effects, and I found that a single party did worse than a larger one. Anyone else have this?

dragons?

can you scare dragons away? i put a dragon early in the game and room to roam around i'm wondering if you would need to spend 500 hours leveling up to kill the dragon or somehow war cry or whatever the dragon so your not dead on hte first hit\flame whatever...

I've only ever tried it with adept/expert characters, with items...something you'll need to test really

one thing i did notice this time around my characters where high level and i tihnk i noticed the worms running away... my currect characters are almost those levels. not sure this counts but while testing the dragon i was to slow to close the door. the dragon came into the door way, i tried to turn and run i tinhk hit the wall or something... and the dragon never hit me or anything. most likely the tramatic events i ever had playing a game.
