How many of you guys have battered the dragon (dm) to death with nothing but a sword/axe/club?? just out of interest! Cheers,

I have, but then, it always seemed to me that the monsters on the low levels seem to have a high magic resistance. I haven't checked this out in DMute yet, however.
With the dragon, any and all the characters are usually using all mana to generate shields!

Once I played all the levels of DM barehands (I reached um master ninja, I think). It's surprisingly effective. The dragon lasted a little more than the others...

As Zyx, I finished the whole DM without casting any other spell than the zokathra spell for the Firestaff. I then learned a few things. For instance, did you know that you have to reach a few wizard levels before you can use the "disrupt" option of Vorpal blades? They can kill ghosts with the "cleave" option anyway, so it's not really a problem. But it's funny. As for the Dragon, Ittook me a little more time than therest of the monsters, but not that much... I think I used spells only the first couple of times against it anyway. The hack-and-bash method is the best against such creatures as it, I think.
Magic Resistance and Wizard levels

Yeah, I think that the lower you go in the dungeon (in the original game, anyhow), the less effective most spells are, somewhat symbolizing Magic Resistance. Certainly the knights are almost completely immune to spells.
In addition to the vorpal blade, most staves have special uses only accessible when your wizard levels get high enough.
I'm curious: has anyone tried the reverse, and tried to finish the game using only spells, not melee?

No, but I used to choose Boris, Tiggy, Wuuf and Gando, trying to cast spells whenever I could instead of fighting. But it's hard at the beginning, I was not so patient...

One trick i only really tried when i was doing that was using strength potions!!! if you load up on them, basically doubling your strength you can do amazing things, the dragon didn't last very long at all, i managed to kill a golem in one swing with his mates club and ko'd 2 knights easily!!! those bloody screamers back on L4 took one hell of a beating though!!!!!!!
stone clubs

stone clubs are tricky...they will normally miss or do mediocre damage, but every once in a while (esp. with greater strength) they will do huge amounts (greater than berserker option 300+hp) of damage to anything...I have killed stone goles in one blow!
