Sound starts then shuts off

This may have been answered before but I didn't see it in the posts (didn't read ALL of them). I go to DOS and select the sound card. I hear the whoosh of FTL and music at the entrance. As soon as I step in the doors and the game starts, a message appears at bottom left, "no sound". Little help?
