What does armour do?

I have been playing DM and CSB on the atari for years and have always wondered what the armour did and what was the best. can anyone put up a list or something
There are several threads on these forums already discussing the relative merits of different armour. Take a browse through it, to avoid starting this discussion all over again...
The general rule of thumb is that the heavier the armour, the more effective it is.
