origin of DM-characters

Anyone knows the books/film "Dune"?
"Chani, Sayyadina Sihara" is a character in dune and also in DM.
Even her picture shows the characteristic blue eyes the fremen have in dune.
Are there other DM-characters appearing in other films/books etc.?
It would be nice adding this at the characters page... (hi christophe ;-) )

cowsmanaut found that 'the bika' of wuuf the bika had egyptian connotations and based his back-story on it
apparently the vorpal blade is from jabberwocky
funnily i never tied in chani from dune, even though i've read the books and seen the film
and i've always thought that halk is just such a conan look alike
i don't recall if there was a gando thurfoot in the birthday party section of lord of the rings, but it's such a hobbit-like name there may as well have been! : )

Well.....
To follow in Ambers foottrails I´m pretty sure that "Halk" is Arnold in his Conan the Barbarian costume! That has always seemed obvious to me!

Sorry Amber, but Gothmog isn't the name of the Lord of the Nazguls; it was the name of his Lieutenant; it was also the name of the Lord of the Balrogs, who slain Feanor

Here's a tid-bit for you, there's plenty more where this came from:
Wu Tse: The Empress of China from 624 to 705. Referred to as “Son of Heaven” because women were not officially recognised for the position of emperor at the time. For those of you wondering about a "son" having breasts, wonder no more!

Hoo, nice forums. Wonderful discovery for an old DM-fan. ;) But, to business at hand...
The name Iaido Ruyito Chiburi is rather amusing. "Iaido" is the name of a kind of a "martial art" (short info:
http://personal.inet.fi/surf/iaido/Iaid ... intro.html ). Each iaido technique is divided into a number of parts, of which "chiburi" is one (the purpose of "chiburi" in each technique is to remove the blood on the blade). Ruyito is probably either intentionally or accidentally mispelled (it does not conform to japanese syllables), but might be the name of a technique (for example, Muso Shinden-ryu has a technique called "ryuto", which might be mis-spelled ruyito by somebody who doesn't know japanese ;).

azizi johari - playmate june 1975 (google her, if you like, she's the same!)
thanks for digging out, nice thread

Interesting, this was how Andy Jaros described Iaido's name:
Iaido – The Japanese way of the sword, having katas similar to Tai Chi. Ryuto – the sixth form of Iaido. Chiburi – the shaking of blood from the sword
Here's a few others that he could remember the origin of:
Elija – Dennis’ [Walker's] tribute to Rastafarianism – the Ethiopian emperor Haile Selasi
Gothmog – You know already, but also my college Game Master’s character for Dungeons & Dragons
Alex – My gaming name – Alexander
Boris – Mike’s [Newton's] character – I don’t know the origin
Azizi – June 1975 Playboy playmate
Chani – Frank Herbert’s Dune heroine
Gando – Frodo’s cousin [I think he was kidding with this one, there's no gando in the works of Tolkien that I could find]
Halk – Conan’s cousin [Again, he's just messing around here....]
Hawk – I don’t remember, I think we all kind of named him
Hissssa – Just a lizardman, coincidentally the sound he makes when he speaks
Lief – The celebrated viking
Leyla – Nothing in particular
Linflas – One of the Elves in the fun board wargame Swords & Sorcery by Simulations Publications Inc.
Mophus – Derived from morphine, evocative of sleep and pain relief.
Nabi – Dennis’s rastaman
Sonja – From Red Sonja, of course
Stamm – A Dwarvish name
Syra – Almost the name of girl I had a crush on when I was 19, changed to Seri (her real name) for DM2.
Tiggy – I think Nancy Holder came up with this one, I’m not sure
Wu Tse – The Empress of China from 624 to 705. Referred to as “Son of Heaven” because women were not officially recognised for the position of emperor at the time
Wuuf – Coincidentally the sound he makes when he speaks
Zed – You know

wow, google rocks:

Heh, cross-over posting?
The 'Zed - You Know' quote from Andy Jaros was because when I asked him the question about origins, I said "Zed we already know is named after a character/city in Sun Dog, and Gothmog [etc...] what about the others?"

quite cool and very typical for DM that the 24 characters are not only a bunch of adventurer-dudes, but (mostly) charakters with a history

that's both interesting and impressing.
btw - is the french text of any interest? i understand some "je veux acheter de pain" (or similar) etc, but that's too complex

wonder if there is a word for steaming blood off a sword with magic...
can anyone translate the french for us lazy mono-linguists so we don't have to endure the horror of babelfish? : )

the french one is a sting of non related half sentances. only the first uhm.. 8-10 words is relavant to the Tiggy Tamal and Gothmog. It also seems to me as though they are screen names and have no relation to the origins of the name.
Though I could be wrong.. but it made little sense to me..

*Sigh* You can never figure out those French. What? I didn't say anything!
Cool. I recognized some of those names, but I had no idea.
What about the rest of the DM2 cast?

And the CSB cast, now that were searching for it ?

Hawk looks like the character Hawk from "Spencer for Hire" played by Avery Brooks.

Someone sent me this about the possible origin of Daroou:
Daroow may be a reference to Clarence Darrow, the man who defended the case for evolution in the public schools in the famous "Scopes Monkey Trial". "Daroow" certainly looks like something that may have evolved. Although, since the debate over Evolution vs. Intelligent Design has been much in the news lately, you may have already heard this...
What do you think about this?
Maybe it's also related to David Darrow, the artist who created the covers of DM and CSB ?

either sund plausable, although most likely the second one to do with the artist!

Someone else suggested it was inspired by Chewbacca from Starwars.

The only 'canon' origin I know of was from Andy jaros: "Daroou is Chewie's cousin." Hardly revealing is it? Is your source from FTL Christophe?

No my source is not from FTL.

OK. I quite like the assumption that it's based on David Darrow -- if you've seen any pictures of him from around that time, he *was* quite hairy!
(No offence David if you're reading this).
