Original Dungeon Master Disk

Hi. I've just bought this original Amiga Dungeon Master off eBay:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... B:EOT:UK:3

I recieved it today but the damn thing doesn't work. They guy insists it worked on his Amiga. I've ried loading the game on my Amiga 1200. It gets to the point where it says "PRESENTS... DUNGEON MASTER" it loads for a few seconds and then just stops loading. The drive light stays on but there is no disk activity. :(
My question is, does this game actually work on an Amiga 1200? It probably doesn't because it's an old game. I have an Amiga 500 but it won't work on that either because it's unexpanded. :(

What version is the DM that I have just bought? Is it v1.0 or 2.0? The disk has the words "Copyright 1986 FTL Games/Software Heaven Inc" on the disk. I hope someone can help.

Steve

AFAIK Dungeon Master v3.6 worked on Amiga 1200's. But your right, all older (i.e. any other) version of Dungeon Master is OCS 1Mb only. This is actually the fault of the protection check on the disk, and not the game itself, which rather explains why the protection was removed for the 3.6 version! On all versions of Dungeon Master on the Amiga apart from v3.6, this is actually an Atari ST formatted protection track.

The way to find the version is to go to the main screen and try to load or save a game. The version number will be in one of the corners of the dialogue that comes up. Of course... As you can't get that far...

You could dump the game for C.A.P.S., and we can tell you if it is okay or not, and what version it is.

There are other reasons it may not work. Like, your drive being out of alignment. But I think it is much more likely because of your A1200 system. You can try degrading your machine (in startup menu, or using KS 1.3 degraders) you might have some luck.

Hi Fiath

Ok Thanks. By the way I'm Steve from EAB. :D
So my A1200 drive is perfect as you know. :)
Ok I'll dump the game for you and upload it to the FTP if it's working yet.

DM 3.6 definitely works on the A1200 if you use Relokick 1.3 as I've tested it and it's perfect.

Yes I already have Dungeon Master v3.6 (Psygnosis) and it does work fine on my A1200. It seems this original (Mirrorsoft) release of Dungeon Master is incompatible with the Amiga 1200.

The guy I bought it from tested the game on a 1MB Amiga 600. When I recieve my newly aquired 512k RAM upgrade for my Amiga 500 I will be able to give it a proper check.

Sorry, my bad, what I meant was all versions PRIOR to 3.6 should work on the A1200 using reloKick 1.3. I tested 2.2 and 3.4 and they both ran fine.

WOOOOHOOO!!

IT WORKS!!

Thank you Gambit!!! :)
I took your most excellent advice and downloaded Relokick 1.3. It does work perfectly now thanks to this nifty little tip. I'm playing the game right now on me A1200 as I type this. Oh the fun. :D

For your information the version I'm using is Dungeon Master v2.2. Is this the earliest version of Dungeon Master on the Amiga?

I know you have loads of different versions Gambit so I'm wondering if you've ever come across a version 1.0 of Dungeon Master?

I must say that I've never actually heard of v3.4 before. Is this still the Mirrorsoft version of Dungeon Master or an early Psygnosis release prior to v3.6?

So to the best of your knowledge how many different Amiga versions are there? Gotta catch em' all. :)

How is your website coming along? I'm really looking forward to it. Nearly 3 years in the making so it should be good. :)

Thanks again!
Steve

Yes, I knew it was you Steve. :)

Glad you got it working! As I said, it is actually the protection that stopped it working as-is on A1200's and not the actual game (not that it matters I suppose), and hence why the protection was removed for v3.6.

I have heard of a 1.0 being around, but I don't think we found it.

I agree, a list of all the versions would be very helpful indeed!

Gambit: Might be nice to get a dump of 3.4 if you are willing as I don't think we have that either.

-> "I have heard of a 1.0 being around, but I don't think we found it"

Gambit will be able to shed more light onto the version numbers of Dungeon Master but I have a little theory:

I don't think there is an Amiga v1.x of DM. I think what the developers have done is continue the version number from the Atari ST releases of Dungeon Master. The Atari ST may have had a v1.0 DM release as it came out about a year before the Amiga version (2.2?) was finally finished. It's just a theory but it does make some sort of sense. :)
