Is it possible to open the door in Death Row, or to get behind the door by another means ? What's in the room beyond ? Anyone know ?

Hmm..you can fall in on the inside once you manage to get into the last section of the Diabolical Demon Director section (which is relatively close to the end of the game from what I remember). In there is a stone golem...and a few items....the map on this site has information. The door is opened with a key the stone golem drops or which is located on the other side of the door from that other side.

That is correct. You enter the area via a pit on the
floor above. I finished the game easily without entering
this area but I have not checked to see if some random
teleportation might put a very valuable object there
by chance. To determine this I would examine the cells in
that area on the ASCII dump of CSB for windows to see if
any of the cells is the destination of a teleporter. You might
want to check the room above the pit, too!

If I remember correctly, to get to death row, open the emerald key doors in the DDD, where you will find a ZOOOOOOM. There's a door with gold lock, and if you try to pick this lock a pit will open and you'll find yourself in the death row.
