Version 9.0 is out! (CSBwin)

Post by ChristopheF »

Chaos Strikes Back for Windows version 9.0 is available on the Clones page.

Release notes by Paul Stevens:

1 - This is the first release since I lost my hard disk and had to try and recover. I hope I got everything restored but I am not sure.

2 - I added a 'Speed' menu to allow you to play the game much more slowly. If, for example, you choose 'Glacial' speed and check the 'Player Clock' option then the game becomes almost indistinguishable from a 'turn-based' game. You can press the shift key to say that you want to pass and the shift key does not count as a move. (You need the new config.txt).

3 - I added a 'Move Counter'. It records the actual number of moves (turns, punches, spell selection, etc.). This is intended as an alternative measure of how quickly you can play the game. It is very different from the time.....for example, sleeping is quite inexpensive, amounting to only two moves. Those of you who (like me) are a bit limited in our eye-hand coordination can ompete on this basis with cleverness rather than quickness.

4 - I needed to release a new source code for Tomas Zahradnicky who is having a good deal of success porting the program to the macintosh.

That is certainly possible. I imagine that a great deal of the code
is identical to CSB. You would probably want to use the same compiler
as I used: Microsoft Visual C++. Then I could help you get started
and I would be willing to spend up to perhaps 50 hours providing
help and advice. Let me know when you are ready to begin.

An easier way to get approximately the same result might be to
create a DM dungeon using DMUTE. An example of this approach is
the very nice DM2 game that was created with DMUTE. And that
was a **MUCH** more difficult problem.

Simpler than that...

DMEdit has converted the CSB dungeon to DM
So therefore DM should be able to go to CSB too to play under CSB4Win

And if not already, then Graphreader has the potential to place DM graphics into the CSB graphics.dat file, so you can play DM under CSB4Windows fully

This has the added advantage that, once you play through DM (through 'the prison') you can then use the disk utility to rip your characters from the save game into the CSB dungeon
Was unable to (permenantly) kill off ian_scho (Haynuus), Ameena, oh_brother (Westian), money (Falkor), raixel (Petal) and Lord_Bones (Aurek) in the DM D&D game Time's Champions!

CONGRATULATIONS TO THOSE WHO MADE THE GAME WHAT IT WAS - GREAT!

That sounds great. Who can do it? I am willing to playtest and
help fix the bugs that are sure to show up. I am pretty sure that
some things are going to be different in the code and therefore
cause errors in the conversion. I might even be able to modify
CSB for Windows to accomodate small problems with the DM dungeon.

Sphenx managed the conversion of the mini.dat and hcsb.dat files straight to DM (see the dungeons forum), so I assume it is the same process back the way.
Zyx has created new graphics.dat files.

In both cases though, it might be created with knowledge outside of the programmes, but still, it should be possible.
