Question about DM damage

I received this via Email. I am no expert on gameplay.
Any ideas what is happening?

(An Aside) An additional note, when playing DM with CSBWin, on level 1 (0 = champions), I noticed that throwing does waaaaay more damage. I can chop a screamer for 40 damage and it lives. But my level 0-0-0-0 wu tse kills one per star-throw. In later levels (5-8, I'm on 8 now) spells are about 3 times stronger. On Amiga DM I remember having to throw plenty of fireballs to kill enemies, esp high level 5/6 ones. Now they seem to drop like flies to my fireballs. It's not worth chopping anymore ;)
