Hi there,

is the vorpal blade the only way to kill these pesky beings?!?

it seems to take an absolute age!

Cheers

vorpal blade, or the 'des ew' spell - in DM they have a bit of health, so yes, they are pesky
wizard levels give you the best attack with the blade

Depends on which attacks you can do with your party, but there are some strong ones around in DM for example. Try some of the additional (custom) dungeons.... even more fun if you have no vorpal blade and your magical abilities are crappy ;o)

Alternatively, if you're meeting them in the Cistern in CSB, you can just place yourself on the other side of a drain from them, and they'll happily follow you and disappear forever down the lovely little square holes :).
Of course, this only works at the above location...there isn't opportunity to do it in DM :(

You can also fuse the slippery little sukers with the firestaff. I found the best thing to do is to use the horn of fear on them and get 'em to retreat. This helped me loads in CSB just past the laughing pit.

Ahh yeah that room...there's a bit you can get into from somewhere which is a room next to the Water Elemental room, where there's a button on the wall (I think it's blue) - this fires a high level (I presume Mon) Harm Non-Material Being spell into the room. Go mad with this button for a bit and then return to the Water Elemental room and you should fine that most of them are dead, muahahahahhaa :)

Besides attacking them with a vorpal blade (make sure that you get both vorpal blades in the game) or banishing them with a DesEw you can of course Fuse them with the firestaff if they are 1 tile close or use lesser staffs/wands to dispell them at range.

When I played DM for the first tim I didn't know how to combat them so I just drove them away with the Horn of Fear.

But if you're playing DM "properly" you don't have the Firstaff at the time you meet them - they're on level 11 and once you fuse the Power Gem to the Firestaff down on level 14 you can't get back up to get revenge (if you left any "alive" when you came down the first time).
I tried that thing where you chuck the Firestaff over the square and it didn't work, so maybe I chucked it from the wrong square or something...

The (non-visible) pressure pad is at 13(49,39), so if you are standing inside the room where you transmute the Firestaff into the Firestaff+ it is exactly the tile before the door where you come to the dragon room.

If you throw the firestaff+ over this one field you can wander back as far as you like - if not an object gets teleported to a pressure plate in level 12 and seals the way back for both entrances.

Hmm I'm sure I tried that...well, maybe I did it wrong. Well, I'll try it whenever I play DM again from the beginning...stand on the square before the door and chuck the Firestaff through...okay :)
Though I get the Poewr Gem first, THEN kill the Red Dragon (using the Firestaff as extra ammo of course), so I'm paranoid about him coming round the corner at that point hehe :).

Nonononono: The square in front of the door is the very one that seals off the exits. So you need to stand two squares in front of the door and throw the firestaff+ over it. Then it should work...

Ohh yeah that's what I meant lol...so stick the Power Gem on it, do a 180 degree turn, chuck the Firestaff, run forward, pick it up again, and leg it before the big red scaly dude comes trundling along preceded by a nasty large orb of orange and yellow death. :)
Will try it at some point :).

You can trap the dragon anyway can't you behind the coin door?

indeed you can : )

I usually simply kill the dragon without any special preparations by simply walking backwards around a pillar in his big hall, striking at him every time he follows around a corner then taking 2 quick steps to retreat repeating that process over and over again until he drops dead.

With the latest version of RTC you probably can't trap the scaly guy if he's also walking through doors :D

Hey Lun, you sneaky, that's how I do him now! I believe back on the Atari we used to run him round and round a block in the area containing the Altar of Rebirth, but now I just use the pillar at the bottom of the stairs at the end of his lair - I don't kill him till I get the Firestaff all gemmed up 'cause its Invoke ability helps nicely with zapping the crap of of him.
And trapping him behind a door? Where's the fun in that? Plus you miss out on the nice, juicy Dragon steaks...Mmm...Dragon steaks...

5 minutes before completing the game - this is no time to think about food! Soon as you have the staff, ya just run off and finish it, you don't generally need to eat 10 dragon steaks by then :-p

Takes too long to kill I think.

you don't neeeeeeeeeed to , but heat them up right using the burning patch of ground from the dragon's breath, bit of ku potion for flavour...mmmm, nice celebratory meal before you get beaten up by demons and chaos upstairs

He's just teasing you. Besides, if you want to have some fun with the firestaff+ and avoid blocking the exits by throwing it through the doorway the dragon steaks can be good use while wandering through the various levels and enjoy your powerful new tool... :P

lol, not teasing, just being weird : )

its a good idea for a puzzle though, no?
a rat or giggler steals an item, you have to entice them out with some nice heated steak topped off with a potion...
or maybe i need more sleep

Maybe it's just Ku potion withdrawal symptoms....

"Just one more potion....."

"Oh no, my wizard's died!!! Arghh I need my potions!!!"

Some hours of quite regular sleep should help you cure most of the symptoms...

Yeah, that's why I want to get the chuck-the-Firestaff-through-the-door thing to work...can go round the whole rest of the dungeon and blow up everything I missed on my way down, muahahahahaa...not that there'll be many mobs left as I tend to kill most things...well, except that room full of Spell Vines at the end of level 12, <shudder>. Right buggers, they are...
And I don't need to worry about food either - by the time I get to level 14 I've got too much of the damn stuff, so I have to leave the yummy steaks where they land so I don't run out of space or go into the yellow, whichever comes first (normally the latter).

everything from level 4 onwards tends to regenerate critters, so still lots to blow up
of course, you can't go back and generate the alternate ending with the complete staff...ah well

It's definitely more relaxing to confront water elementals or zytaxes left with the fuse option of the firestaff ;o)

Ok, now that RTC has a general editor: How do I have to modify the DM dungeon to reproduce the firestaff bug (exact original behaviour)?
