This is just a guess, and I could possibly be wrong.
Maybe the programmers intended that you should swiftly kill the boss once the portal is opened. If you would take too long, it says bye
*enemy minions that are appearing in the final stages of the game begin to respawn faster and faster.

Does it go back to a DOS prompt when it says BYE
If so, it might have crashed.

The BYE message is seen at the DOS prompt. It normally happens when memory can't be allocated properly -- generally a problem if you try and run it in Windows.
As you've clearly got it running OK, it's probably because too many minions have generated and the game simply can't handle it.

I know this is an old thread but I only just installed DMII for Windows and am playing it with DOSBox.
When I quit the game and get back to the black area, where it says: C:\ and I type: exit to get out of the DOSbox, above that, it says "bye".
I think it's just intended to be funny and to give you a feeling of the game saying goodbye to you.

Yeah, it says "Bye" whenever you exit; it's just for some people, because the game crashes immediately, they see "Bye" straightaway -- which isn't funny but annoying.

It isn't the only game that gives a farewell message when you quit to DOS - Stonekeep does too, though the message varies each time, stuff like "You must hurry back, Thera is waiting!", stuff like that.
I think Pagan gave a message like "Rest well, Avatar!" but that doesn't work on this comp 'cause it needs proper DOS /sob so I can't play it any more waaah
