HAVING A GREAT TIME GUYS!

I am using just 2 warriors for DM. Tiggy and Wuuf. I am just commencing the Void and their stats are now Tiggy: 224H 103S and 103M; Wuff 248H 155S and 120M. Its amazing how much easier it is with just 2 warriors - they used to hold me back when I played with 4 but now they are just as powerful as Stamm etc. Never run out of food either. Dont need to use darts and stars, their wizard skills replace their need and are pretty good fighters!

Loving being back in the dungeons again.....thanks to those amazing people who lodged this site.

lol, glad you are still having fun : )
yes, two character play isn't the handicap you would think, playing one character is a slight compormise on magical/fighting power and storage space, but in return you get to pool all the experience in one place as you find with two characters, and gain the ability to dodge spells

i'm impressed with the use of tiggy, i always used to take her, but because of her health and stamina i started going with boris instead

I had to complete it solo with the two extreme characters - tiggy who is VERY weak but the best magic user, and Stamm who has 0 mana and has the axe :)

The great thing about 1 character is you can dodge projectiles more easily.

Stamm was who I used for my 31 minute DM record :D

Beowuuf - just ever so slightly curious - who or what is Kristie????? I would like to think she was the current love of your life - but perhaps its a game...?

Paul H - 31 minutes???? 1 inexperienced Stamm???

Oh yes, my son in law let me watch him 'kill the dark one' so now I can say, yes, you can do it!!! He has gone on to CSB - what a chaotic ride that is!!!

Why is it that the are no games like this for PC now??? why do we have to rely on guys like you, and Steem etc. to play them? Doesnt Microsoft or whoever realise these games are still solid gold??? I have noticed that all the oldergames on CD dont load easily onto the newer computers either and unless you know your way around dos you just cant play them anymore either.

Yes, 31 mins and 45 secs using Stamm, right down to killing Chaos. Me and the Antman had a great battle with the times, though now he's trying again I might have to put my Boots of Speed back on.

Have a look at:

You can download the replays from Paul Stevens' site

Don't expect much soon, i have to go away for about a week. So i will have to wait awhile before i can start trying again. Have you thought of trying to beat the CSB record? I know its possible to beat, just don't collect the keys of b and use the master key you get from Neta to go through the other entrance to Choas's lair. Something like 12 minutes might be possible.

Ant, you say you can now move even faster?! That is worrying for the record! I haven't played for a while actually, I have been redesigning the wall graphics for CSB win: not easy with just 16 colours. Looking pretty good though, just need to design a dungeon for them now.

Paul H - I downloaded your 31 minute game but couldnt play it back - I would have loved to watch this.

I am now on the 10th level of DM with my 2 warriors only and their stats are (and no, I am not constantly 'training them' in vege or meat rooms:

Wuff: H 418 St 211 Mana 153
Tiggy: H352 St 169 Mana 150

Wuff is a mon master priest and warrior and Tiggy is a mon master wizard and expert warrior.

I find the lyte and darc armour too heavy so they both have speed boots, the chest plate and shields only - quite sad to throw away their leg armour and boots but they dont get much damage any more.

I dont know if its just me, but i find that the latter levels eg 8+ arent as nearly as scary as I remember - the scorpions arent too bad, and the spiders ae a bit of a pain but the rats this time were pussy cats.

Stalling finishing the game as I am enjoying it so much.

I downloaded your 31 minute game but couldnt play it back
Why not? What is its name? Where did you get it?
It has to work or I will make it work.

Things to know.

1) You must play it with the version of CSBwin.exe that was
distributed with the movie.

2) You must play it with the graphics.dat that was distributed
with the movie.

3) You must play it with the dungeon.dat that was distributed
with the movie.

In other words, everyting must be exactly the same.

Some more precisions about how to watch a movie:
Put the log file in the same directory as CSBwin.
Rename it "playfile.log"
Run CSBwin, choose DUNGEON.
When you're facing the entry, go in the upper CSBwin menubar and choose "Misc->Playback".

I have not downloaded CSBwin programme - not sure how to do this.

I downloaded someone's dungeon clone to play (Cowsmonauts) and when I tried to open the programme my puter stated it couldnt read it. I must have spent days trying to find on the net a programme which could read "Ace" or something like it, but never succeeded.

I felt really daft and didnt want to show my ignorance. However, I really would like to know and see the game and be able to play on something else apart from the Steem engine I am.

Reading all your threads makes me realise my shortcomings. I am not a programmer nor do I seem to have much aptitude to become such. I am a basic, step by step plodder, who having much plodded  happily plods along and masters eventually the plodding.

I have watched people performing DOS! They walk on water almost. Part of my job is training staff on Advanced Word, PowerPoint, Publishing programmes, and (dont laugh) computers for beginners! But, thank the powers that be, we have an IT department who tolerates me benignly.

I have a very good computer, the latest HP dream machine with jetstream so its up there with the best.

If someone can walk me through that would be generous of you. In the meantime I will give it another go.

Thanks.

I have not downloaded CSBwin programme - not sure how to do this.

I think that is the reason why you can't play it back, these files need it!

The download for CSB4win is on the encyclopaedia link here
Using this as a basis, you can follow the instructions above to get the various movie files to play

There is a link in the CSB4win forum for the latest version of the engine that are still udner test, and in the custom dungeon forums to a few new dungeons released for playing under it too!

There is a link in the CSB4win forum for the latest version of the engine
I sense a basic misunderstanding here. Few people seem to
realize that these 'movies' MUST be played with
the same version of CSBwin that created them. The latest
version is of no use whatsoever. That is why all the movies
are packaged with the graphics and executable required to
play the movie.

So....when she says she downloaded the movie but
has not downloaded CSBwin......how could this happen?????
Where did she get it from? Not from dmweb or my site
because they have CSBwin in the same rar file as the movie
itself.

As far as this misuderstanding of how the movies work.....
It is a long story and one that I shed many hours and lots
of effort to write. But it has paid off in many ways. What is
recorded is the mouse-clicks and keystrokes. Nothing else.
So, if the runtime engine is changed to deduct an extra player
hitpoint (as an example) then that may cause the next
swing of the axe to use a different algorithm to determine
damage, which may in turn cause the random number generator
to be called one extra time, which will cause all future random
numbers to be different, which will cause a monster not to
die which will cause the party to bump into the monster rather
than go forward one square, which will cause the party to press
on the wall instead of on the switch in the adjoining cell which
will cause the door to not open, and from there on nothing will
be the same. The point is that the slightest change will almost
certainly cause a totally different outcome after a few moves.

By the way....I still have not gotten over the awe of seeing these
movies actually work. It is hard to believe when you know what
is happening inside.

I went initially to the dianneandpaul.net site and initially downloaded the 31 minute replay as recommended. This was saved to my 'downloads' file. When I tried to play it my puter stated that it did not recognise the programme - winace or something like that. I gave up from that point on and didnt want to show my ignorance to you techno guys...

I have now downloaded from the link you gave, CSBwin and going to see what happens.

Incidently, dont you guys work at all????? 8) Its my day off and you live in the opposite parts of the world, yet youre online and helping me???

Beowulf, downloaded CSB4win as your link suggested, its in my download files but when I try to open it nothing happens. Do I need to download other files?

When I scan through threads from other forums, no one else seems to have this problem eg "I downloaded the CSBwin and straight into the game". not for me it seems.

Incidently, dont you guys work at all
No. I don't work. I did that for 50 years and I had
quite enough of it.

I just downloaded a file from dianneandpaul.net called

MovieDM3145.rar

I extracted it to a folder all by itself. The folder
now contains five files:

Credit.txt
CSBwin.exe
dungeon.dat
graphics.dat
playfile.log

I open the folder with Windows Explorer and double-click
on CSBwin.exe. I am doing this as I write so as not to
leave out any steps.

It says" "I am ready Master. What is Your Wish?"

I click on "Dungeon".

The door appears. With "Enter" and "Resume" buttons.

I select the "Misc" menu. Dropdown Menu appears. I select
"Playback".

I watch the movie.

Where do things go wrong for you? What is the name
of the file you downloaded? When you extracted the
files what files did you get? What did you do then?
What did you see?

I'm guessing by what you are saying, that you are having trouble extracting the file, you need a program called WinRAR, easy to find I think.

I myself havent been to Auckland in ages, several music things have taken me close, but if i get into the NZ Youth Orchestra that is held up there, but thats not for quite a while. Anyway, i'm sure this problem can be solved.

Yup, .rar are zipped files tpp and you need an extractors. WinRAR you can get from www.winlab.com. WinACE should also extract RAR files, and also .ace files...but go with WinRAR not to confuse the issue :)

And work, yup, i have that
I also have a small house and not too large a work and broadband at each. If I'm more than a few metres from my computer at either I'm outside freezing, and when a computer's online, how can you resist checking on the forums every so often : )

Oh and Oh my...

downloaded the file at dianneandpaul.net again and followed instructions.

double click and even double click on DM3145, right click, any click on the file - nothing.

double click on the CSBwindowsLinux96 file- nothing. No files are displayed within the folder.

Followed your instructions Paul H. Unable to open file at all.

Went to the RAR link recommended by Beowuff and tried to download the RAR.files but its in Italian  and I need a password and loggon to enter the site. My Italian consists of 'prego' bona sera, avanti and gratias, mucho gusto or is that Spanish

Well dear Mentors - we are having the worst weather in NZ in 100 years - floods like never before and now a cyclone is heading this way and everything is tied down and we are in for another few days of up to 200 kph winds and lashing rain.

Thank you all again for your interest.

You MUST have a programme that can decompress the files in the downloaded folder. Best thing to do is go to google.com and type in 'win rar' and see what you get. There are plenty of free programmes.

Sorry to hear of the weather problems. Here in the UK, we have had an inch of snow and the whole country grinds to a halt! Makes me laugh, I think half the population of this country wouldn't have a clue if we moved somewhere with real weather!

I found an english version of RAR.

Downloaded it but I only get it for 40 days then i have to pay for it - licenced etc. Is this correct? do you have to pay for it to run Linux?

I then dragged the RAR dezipper onto the movie and have just completed the whole 31 minutes, Stamm, zipping through DM and seeing the white lord himself!

Its very late - 2 am and sleepy but satisfied that I HAVE seen the movie and itwas wonderful to behold - those purple worms seemed to be the most time consuming for Stamm.

Congrats - it was great!!! (and see, I am learning how to use all this new knowledge from you all  )

Tomorrow will see how playing DM or Chaos works now that I have the RAR.

Hopefully, its now goodbye to STEEM...

gratias senors...

Congrats for getting it all working!

So the weather is really bad in Auckland to. We had to call the firebrigade to nail down the roofing iron on our house as it was blowing away last saturday, and now its just started pouring with rain again.

Well, we can view the 31 minute movie with no prob. However, (aghhh) I cant play on Linux - says it cant find files and things - when I double click the .bat files (DM or CSB) a black dos box flashes but I cant access it and a message overidesit saying

Windows cannot find CSB Win - make sure you type the name correctly and try again et al.....

The weather is so bad the rain is sideways and its around 130 kph at the moment. My husband lived in the Aleutian Islands for 3 years just off Alaska and he says it was never like this there... I have shade sales  up over the outdoor living area and its too dangerous to try and cut them down even. Rather risk them ripping off than someone's health right now. Water is gushing down the chimney pipe and I have towels wrapped trying to stem the flow. Its a solid cedar 2 story house and lots of little leaks are springing up here and there.

Any suggestions for getting CSBLinux96 up and running? especially now I can run the movie whenever...

Once again, thank you for all your advice everyone.

THIS FORUM DOESNT RECOGNISE ME ANYMORE

As you can see above - I am now a 'guest'. It wont accept my username or password anymore.

Could this be due to the weather???

I have never used the Linux version. But it sounds like
you are trying to play the Windows version on Linux.
The Linux version is found at:

http://debian.frodo.looijaard.name/

But I think it is for a particular brand of Linux. (I am
totally ignorant of the issues with the Linux release).
It say "Debian" Linux.
