How the hell dya start playing CSB?

Post by Horse »

Annoying.
Ive just finished DM after years in the wilderness without it and boy was it good to be back. (im running the Windows Linux version)

Now, much like the previous guy, im trying CSB for windows. I can tour the prison, pick a team, and thats it. It tells me to exit the game and use the StartUp Disc ( i remember that from the original Amiga version) but alas it doesnt actually start the game. If i quit and then reopen and resume the game, it just starts me off where ive saved it, in the Prison.

Useless and bl00dy frustrating.

Any clues anyone?

Well, here we are.

I'm the fellow who wrote CSBwin. So I am somewhat
familiar with it.

In the prison, you select your characters. Then you save
your game. For example, save it as CSBGAME.DAT.

Now you must place these characters into the CSB dungeon.
Run CSBwin the same way you did when you entered the
prison. But.....instead of clicking on 'DUNGEON', click on
'UTILITY'. Then select the game in which your characters
were previously saved. In our example, 'CSBGAME'.

Then click on 'MAKE NEW ADVENTURE' twice. Heh! I did not
create this. This is how the Atari game worked.

Then select where you want your new game to reside. For example,
click on 'CSBGAME2'.

Then click on 'QUIT'.

Run CSBwin again. (This is like rebooting the Atari.)
Click on 'DUNGEON'. You will be at the prison door again.
Click on 'RESUME'. Then select the name of the
game that you saved. 'CSBGAME2' in our example.

Now you are starting the adventure
with your selected party in the CSB dungeon. You will be
in a dark room with your enemies gathered around you.
The first time you do this you will be convinced that something is
wrong. A game cannot start this way. But it does.

just to point out.. this is exactly how you had to do it with the Amiga. You pick your heros. Then activate them adjust their images etc. and then 'make new adventure' all before being able to play CSB. And you had to reboot after each step. The difference here is that CSB4Win loads a damn site faster than my amiga 500 :)

Firstly: Apologies for the repeat posts. I spent a good hour searching the forums cos i was sure someone else may have had the same problems, and decided that the best way was to attach my problem to a few 'similar' problem threads. Sorry if it wound you up at all... *hides*

Secondly: Thank you for the expedient and erudite response!

Thirdly and finally: It worked! (of course it did, you made the game so it was bound too!) It also jogged my memory of the old amiga startup....I just hope my PC doesnt die every six months the way my Amiga used too ha ha!

Thanks again, nice site by the way, nice nice nice indeed. Just emailed an old mate who i used to play the game with (Version 1, he did the walking and i did the mousework!) and he's amazed its still out there....so thanks from him too!

Neighs. :D
...fast as the mind behind the eyes......

I'm amazed how many people played DM in tandem, though I never tried this (no idea of doing this, no people to do with :D).
But my main problem: I need some party selection advice! In DM and DM 2 I've found the "Sandman's finest" pretty quick, but I can't help myself in CSB. The game's a little bit more difficult than the other ones in series, so maybe that's the problem.
Now I'm trying Tunda, Algor, Petal and Plague (or Necro).
Please help!

Plague is quite good, but has low stamina.
i took tunda and buzzzz and itza, too.
that was my second party.

my first party had been the one from dm,hissssa daroou wuuf and elija at very high levels, and with boosted stats(amiga, lost items but kept stats), so it was a nice walkthrough somehow.

You can actually train your reincarnated heros in the prison, until they almost starve to death. this way, you can easily train four levels (neophyte, novice, apprentice, craftsman,..) in each skill for every character. The food/nurture value is set to normal if you save and make a new adventure..
But anyways, good luck with your current party!!

Yeah I played through CSB with a good friend of mine Paul.. He even had a tape recorder going through a lot of sections. We basically for a weekend sat down in my basement (he had slept over) and went in shifts. He would play for a while and then I would take over and so on. It's funny because he sent me an MP3 of it.. (HE STILL HAD THEM) and it was weird .. I remembered sections and then hearing things I was saying about it.. and he was getting pissed off with the game too so he'd start mouthing off monsters and so on.. funny funny.
