DM SNES alternate version?

In my research for my DM website I have discovered that among the many hint books available in Japan, there is one for SNES DM that features images from an alternate version of the game.
If you've played DM SNES or ripped the graphics out, you'll know that many of the creatures were re-drawn in a more cartoony, japanese style. However, the guide book I've seen shows images that are more like those from the original game.
Perhaps there was an earlier version that used the familiar images? Has any body seen this different version of SNES DM?

No links, it was something I found on Yahoo Japan some time ago. I'll see if I still have the image saved and upload it.

I was one of those crazy people who went and bought this game, as well as the cloned Skulkeep for my Sega CD even though I already owned both for my computers. But I really enjoyed the game. They changed a few of the designs on the monsters - the Gigglers, Animated Armors, and Couatls were the most notable. On the whole, most of the graphics were faithful adaptions of the original version, and they added some really beautiful and creepy pieces of music that enhanced a few of the levels. Level 4, Meet Your Doom, was most notably enhanced by the addition of music... As though those Magenta worms couldn't be unnerving enough.
I had one of the first versions, and my friend has the second that was chopped up even more so. My copy is slower than hell to play, but I am glad I bought a copy of this first version. It is almost identical to the computer version, with a few secrets changed here and there, and occasionally I found all my old maps were a square or two off. The dungeon itself remained otherwise unchanged, and most of the monsters were identical to the old, with the exceptions I already noted.
Hope that explained some things, and if not, just let me know. I'll try and be clearer.
I am so thrilled to have found this site, I was starting to get the feeling that I the only person who ever played this game!

In DM2 manual for Amiga version, there are screenshots where in the inventory screen the characters have detailed head/torso/hands... not just schematics. I always wondered what kind of DM2 version is this, because I haven't seen such illustrations in the Amiga version.

Probably an alpha or beta version. I'm sure they removed the detailed hands before launch because they would be confusing. The schematic ones are much easier to tell apart from equipment icons. (Game manuals are almost always assembled long before the game is finished, so they're ready to ship when the game is done. Then they change things during beta, and the manual is no longer accurate.)

One thing I forgot to mention: I also have seen screenshots with such hands in a magazine before I have seen the manual. Do you think these screenshots were pre-release (most possibly)? The screenshots were in a later issue than DM2 review... Sometimes magazines just browse their screenshot database just to fill the space.

The hint book I was referring to has been relisted on auction.Yahoo.jp, you can see it here:

I'm going to ask my contact if he'll obtain it for me, but I think he's already sick of me, so keep your fingers crossed!

Woo hoo! I've just received my rather large package of Dungeon Master goodies from Japan. It turns out that the above wasn't a guide book at all, but simply an A4 poster advertising the game. Still, it's an interesting piece of merchandise. See this thread for a photo of the stuff I have just received:

I splurged and spent $11.04 on a copy of DM SNES with a box and manual (shipping included), and I plan to send in scans of stuff if the stuff is in good condition. I downloaded the ROM pack and noticed there were 4 versions! I can't imagine any more! How cool. More graphics. How many different sets does that put the count at? 4? 5?
