The easiest to install and use and the least buggy:

Of course I have reason to be biased.

The CSB clone of DM is excellent, as is the RTC version, both for Windows. They run on current operating systems fine. For Dungeon Master 2, playing the Macintosh version on a real Macintosh is best (System 7,8,9, and Classic under X) and the PC version is difficult to run with the smoothness of an old computer.

The Windows clones are better than the original because of the levels of modification and customization (the programs that customize are Windows-based) and the ST and Amiga are not common computers anymore.

You could probably start a war on that question....;)

(take a look at the dungeonmaster&chaosstrikesbackencyclopaedia)

For pure gameplay, i think i like the Amiga version the most.
-->emulator rom??;

The pcversion is good, but you have not all the sound available.
To start it is not a bad choice.

I never played any of the original Atari St versions...but i do not doubt that they where good as well...

csb4win/linux lets you play custom dungeons(fan made and original ones), participate in competitions and has many more enhancements built in(experience tracker , movies, ect..)..has been ported to macintosh computers and to the pocket pc.
The corresponding editor is called csbuild.
It is close to the original Atari ST version, so you should definitely check it out.

There is Return to Chaos; RTC; another clone, not as close to the original dungeon master as csb4win.. but with enhanced monster strategies (e.g. some collect items to throw at you.); THis clone allows you to build your own dungeons, too, with an included editor...That is also fun.

Other editors provide the possibility to to alter to an extent the graphics of monsters and to modify items. Not that easy, though.

Dungeon master java is another clone, although an abandoned project. Some say it is difficult, and it is.

There are other clones & various projects are going on, more or less dmlike, yet to be fully completed.

Anyway, enjoy!!

You made that up! :) RTC doesn't have this as a feature; well, not yet anyway.
Dungeon master java is another clone, although an abandoned projec
It's not abandoned, it's COMPLETED. Big difference.

I'd like to see somebody's computer play DM2 on any emulation platform and do it smoother or faster than mine :P !

DMJava is very easy to edit, but you lose much of the atmosphere of the dungeon and the gameplay strays from the original (its just the feel, you know?)

The lastest CSBWin should have no sound problems, (or call Paul Stevens and tell him, I'll bet he'd be mad if the newest wasn't working.)

Gambit:
RTC :as far as i remember, the trollins can collect their clubs and throw them!.

for dmjava .actually i was wondering about whether i should call it abandoned or complete. STRANGE.
It seems i made a BAD choice....ach, all this editing...just a thought THe maker of dmjava has finished the project and then abandoned it.=he does not work anymore on it. BUt there is another guy who has done some efreet/djinn/genie monster....so it is not dead...maybe undead..chuckle and shrug.

trying to say moooo!

nope *shakes head* no trolin club throwing
you can do that to them though! : )

there are a few people who have done modules in dmjava - germanny has produced some nice graphics sets and a dungeon or two.

I am really confused *shakes head vigorously*. I could swear they did throw their clubs at me. Well they where antmen i think, but ...
ok. i HAVE to check that ...*runs into wrong direction...*

Being seriously, *pant, pant* i do think that i made back then a one level dungeon with dmute...sadly i do not have it anymore. that is the only plausible explanation i have. I do not know the programmes as well as you, and would never question or ignore your advicesect. but i am really sure that there had been a trollin throwing clubs at my party!! It could have been an altered pc-dungeon master, though, because i had an monster tactics screen or sth...
arrrrgh!!! Maybe someone can help.

Regards,

There is one level on CSB where there is an 'anti-throw' device. It's at the ring where the antmen are on KU. If you come up the stairs i think, and throw an item, then it will be teleported and reappear coming from an invisible wall at the other side.
It is possible that this may be what happened, since you did say it may have been antmen that threw it at you.

and head crabs are nothing to laugh at! not unless you are running or have a gun too! : )

It was definitely not RTC!

Hmmm it could have been dmjava....took me three posts to realise.
*grabs gun and runs*

yes, in dmjava there is a distinct possibility that you had things thrown at you : )
like this *throws a head crab* uh=-oh, i don't think it liked that *runs away with wimpy crowbar*

in french for blutch...
