Depends how you mean - there's different types of balance. For example, a couple of no-mana fighters balanced out by a pair of high-mana casters. Or a party in which all four members have similar stats. You might want to have a mess around and experiment with different characters and combinations till you find what suits your taste. Even those with no mana at the start can end up casting uber spells eventually, and even the weakest, flimsiest magic user can eventually melee something without dying in a couple of hits.
However, in previous discussions on this forum, it seems that certain characters are more popular than others. My regular party now is (Re-Incernated) Hissssa, Gothmog, Wuuf, and Gando. The first three of those are fairly common choices, it seems, but several people have such preferences as Halk, Stamm, Daroou, and in one or two bizarre cases, Mophus.

Hello!
Hmmm... Ameena (or Fippy?) is surely right... But, what about changing the rules (for once)? ^^
I would just like to propose another way to choose your characters... (Beware!) This is an 'heretic' way to choose them (!)...
Here is the way I personally choose my champions:
- Don't look if they are "good" or "clumpsy"... just look at their portrait and ask yourself "Do I like this one?" (if the answer is no, forget this char.).
- The answer to the question you ask yourself just above will be often : "yes" (because the person who drew these portraits did probably put a piece of his heart in each of them! (I know no one who really dislike one of these portraits (does someone dislike a character in DM?)))
- Once you've seen all the different portraits, try to remember the ones you like "more than the others".
- Select the 4 characters with the portraits you like the most and re-incarnate them.
Your party will be well balanced, because it is your party whatever happens (!). You will cherish them and correct their defaults. ^^

Two fighters and two magic users is balanced. Remember that you can train any char in anything, so any party will do. Some chars are just a bit better at some things that others.
As for the exact heroes, everyone has different favourites. Mine are Hissssa, Daroou, Tiggy and Boris/Wuuf depending on my mood. You can get a flask in the dungeon soon, so starting with one is limited benefit.
Objects you get most mileage out of that you can start with:
Moonstone (9 levels), rope (8 levels), Sword (2 levels), Axe (2.2 levels), Samurai Sword (1.5 levels)
For less methodical approach, Charlatan's advice is good. Pick those you like. As I said at the beginning, any party will be good enough.

I take the four women. Sonya, Chani, the Elf blonde and the female thief.

i suggest hissssa (strong and mana is ok) and stamm (axe) as fighters and wuuf (bottle) and chani (moonstone for stamm) as mages. train all of them at least a bit in all 4 disciplines, so they will get more health and stats. you can train fighter- and priest-skills by warcrying the first screamer some minutes, this will multiply the mana of hissssa and stamm very easily, allowing to cast light as wizard-training.

Zed (all rounder) Stamm (repliable fighter plus axe), Boris (good mana and mage) Wuuf (flask from the start, good mana, and very flexible spellcaster) - this party will let you cast healing, use any basic weapon, cast good spells (though all biased to one person) and also have one flexible fighter who can right away learn magic to back up your main priest/wizard.
Take the time to let the back characters get some ninja levels to beef up and learn each other's trade, find ways to let Stamm get mana, and keep practising everything with Zed as he can get priest and wizard levels early, and can gain in fighter levels reasonably well too.

Stamm and Zed for sure are my fav combination of front 2. Once you get Stamm casting MON fireballs he really is a well-rounded character with plenty of strength. Zed like you say Beo is an all-rounder when it comes to ability, he can pretty much do everything you need. For the back I used to choose Wuuf as the 3rd (Priest) but found out most times that he becomes much more of a caster than the 4th (Wizard) I take whether it be Elija, Nabi, Boris or Tiggy... Wuuf outgrows them all so I usually put him as the 4th character now. As for 3rd it's a choice between a few, Gothmog, Nabi, Elija....
I like to balance my team by having the 1st character as a strong fighter, the 2nd as a high dexterity ninja that can also fight (Zed is good here coz his stats are all above 40), 3rd character is my priest and 4th is wizard. Of course the back 2 can cast whether they're priests or wizards so its all good, and I cast with my ninja quite a lot too.
I talk a lot.

Good party, I used to use Tiggy in Boris's place but her health annoyed me more than the lovely mana was cool, and I take Halk withStamm myself now, but then that leaves you drier for magic in your first run - have fun with it!
My Team

The team I am using at the moment is:
Daroou
Hissssa
Nabi
Gothmog
I feel it is important to have two really tough front liners to get through the first few levels. Certainly until you reach the Shreiker room. Magic becomes more and more important as the game goes on, but without Hissssa (strongest dude in the game) and Daroou (Right up there with strength, but can also do some (very bad, admittedly) spell casting) I think i wouldv'e been toast before i could even reach level four's shreiker room.
As it happens, i was surprised at how (relatively) easy the Worms were to tackle. I 'melee'd with Daroou (axe) and Hissssa (sabre) and poison clouded with Nabi and Gothmog.

My one and only choice (since the old Amiga days till todays emulator era):
Tiggy (need a wizard? Take the strongest one and make no tradeoffs

. Too weak for you? Train her! Bless god, that she's just tall enough to be seen in the mirror...

)
Chani (a must-have for any "Dune"-fan, look at her beautiful blue eyes... and a nice Moonstone for the "not-so-magical" party members comes as bonus)
Daroou (no need for clothing at the beginning, fur is better

. If i was a worm, this fur-ball would scare me... And under all these hairs you find a little magic talent too. )
Hissssa (need a stylish fighter? Take him. Stamm and Halk always looked too "dumb" for me. Hey guys, look at their portaits: Do you really can imagine that these two guys cast magic spells?

)
So i have a "balanced" party:
2 males - 2 females
2 humans - 2 not-so-humans (including an aristocratic lizard!

)
2x skin - 1x fur - 1x scale armour
2 wizards/priests - 2 ninjas/fighters (at the beginning)
A moonstone at start to train the back row guys in magical arts
Who in hell needs axe and flask at start? I go on duty for the grey Lord, not for Lord Coward...

In a pinch, I'd rather have a dumb looking friend with a big axe rather than a nice looking talking lizard.

Yeahh, flame war is opened...
Stamm rules... maybe in ice age. A club would better match him than an axe. I've heard rumours, that he's got cooties in his ugly beard. Hmmm, yellow... maybe remainings from the last breakfast-eggs?!?
And belonging to Hissssa: No damn giggler can steal his mighty claws. And what about Stamm's axe?

Hissssa is a hermaphrodite. So I can't argue with your claims of him being balanced.

There is definitly no flag for "hermaphrodite" in the source code!
Don't be tricked by my small amount of posts in this forum, i'm no novice in DM-things...
In german, "Stamm" means a tree's trunk. So this is a match: Both of them have the same intellectual capabilities...
Maybe we should flame us in the chat...

In order to start a flame war you would need a spark of intelligent debate : )
Stamm rules, case closed, anyone disagreeing will be banned when they least expect it and all posts edited with the word 'wibble' to make them seem silly to future generations of DM players : )

Can you let me know what a good balanced party would be
I am not sure if many people will agree but I think:
1. Leif - good, strong fighter who later becomes a great spellcaster. When reincarnated, he can certainly become a great all-round character.
2. Halk - again, he is a good fighter and I've had him trained high up in the wizard and priest levels, shame about the lack of mana but once he gets his hands on some magical items there is no stopping him.
3. Sonja - just wait while she starts gaining priest levels, and she's always handy to kick some ass if the front two characters are killed/injured
4. Daroou - good stats and becomes a good all-round character in the game. Again, a good backup if another character is injured in combat.
I am not too keen on the likes of Gothmog and Boris because their food and stamina goes down too fast.

I never noticed any difference in speed of food line decrease...and stamina can be increased by training...erm...Fighter levels...or Ninja levels...umm...yeah, levels, anyway...
And who wants stinky Dorf, blech...better to have funky reptile and cute ickle doggy and cool black-cloaked-glowy-eyed thingy dude. Well okay, that said, I do have a Dorf myself, but at least he has some mana

.
Wibble wibble wibble. Pooh to you, fuzz brains

.
"...make them seem silly to future generations of DM players."
Make me seem silly? You need to expend efforts to make me seem silly? Are not my own efforts enough? Just how mortally offended should I be at that crass, wounding comment of yours? Pfah! Stinky dog-bum

Hah, I'd make you look boring, all your cool posts I'd turn into pictures of snails and 500 line poems about stone, wahahahhahahaha

Ahhh but snails CAN be interesting (or are you saying PaulH is boring?) under certain circumstances, and so could a poem about stone if written effectively enough...dunno about 500 lines though...
And anyway, surely making me look boring isn't hard since I probably manage it well enough anyway with big long posts waffling a load of crap that says something that could probably be said in about two lines eh

I haven't played DM in a while but my player was always 1. Stamm, 2. Halk, 3. Zed, 4. Gothmog.
Is this a decent team or should I change next time I play.

It seems to be a very good party. Halk and Stamm are probably the best fighters you can take, Zed is a good all-rounder, and Gothmog a decent magic-user, though I always preferred Boris or Wuuf over him.

Gothmog is not a decent magic user, this propaganda all came about cause he looks cool!

Ah so the fact he's a Journeyman Wizard to begin with is al just a big front is it? Omg the LIES :O.
Posted: Sun Sep 11, 2005 4:12 pm
by beowuuf
It's not a friont,. but it is a waste - a) he has only 20 mana? You can't doube fireball! b) journeyman wizard? If you ressurect you have to wait ages to level up! Boris and tiggy kick his arse instantly,. fireballing right away with more mana than he's dreamed off...well, 20% extra anyway.
Plus his dexterity is crap without his cool cloak...
