How do I do what Lost Scrolls of Mount Anais says I can do?

The Lost Scrolls of Mount Anais says that there is a way to have the firestaff but not close all the walls that lead to stairs up to the upper levels from Chaos' level. It says before you grab the firestaff. Does anyone know how to do that?

It can be done but it doesn't achieve anything special

There is a floor trigger in front of the square key door that is activated if the party carries the firestaff over it. To avoid this happening once you have the firestaff plus gem, turn around on the spot and throw the staff.

NOTE: This works with the Atari ST version! It does not work in RTC as the trigger is operated by carried items and flying items. But i've never played any of the other versions so couldn't say how they act.

PS. Have you returned to the dungeon entrance with the firestaff before joining it with the gem?

Actually, I don't even have the staff yet, but I can, just not ready to. I am playing Dungeon Master Win(CSBWin with Dungeon Master Graphics)but the save game was copied from my Dungeon Master PC34 game because it wouldn't work!
I posted this so far in advance of needing to do this so that I have time to get an answer.
Well, thanks for the help, that will really help me, always being hungry!!

I went and looked at the map using DM Builder...
I do see what is happening. If I carry the firestaff to right inside that square key hole, the stairs are blocked. But if I through it right from where I get the firestaff+, I might only throw it 3 spaces and make it land on the space. Or will that not close it? What do you think of my "what would you call it"?

It triggers on carrying only - so even if you mis-judge the throw (you shouldn't) jsut stand on the tile either side of the trigger pad and pick it up (throwing again if necessary) and nothing will happen.
