Just curious if I could get in with a chat client like mirc into our chatroom.
Is that possible, if so please give details.

Not as far as I know. It's all built in Flash and integrates with the phpBB for usernames.

thanks GAmbit. flashchat is not
that bad, anyway.
I heard, you seem to have more customization possibilities in mirc like blinking on screen instead of sound message, and maybe there would be not as many lags, maybe. I am not very literate at these things, and it doesnot matter, I just would have given it a try.
This forum, compared to others, is high quality I think, and flashchat adds nicely!
I totally forgot about #dungeonmaster channel on quakenet. I went there only once and met a japanese? or so who played dm2 with one character. My computer crashed at the time and as said i forgot about it.. Is there still someone around? Even back then, the guy was saying noones ever there!

I used to go there, a long time ago.
Nobody except sucinum was ever there, at that time. Lunever (does he still come here?) came in a couple of times. That was it.

is it possible to show, somewhere on main forum site, a counter of people sitting there on a moment? (or a list of people sitting on a flashchat, or just a counter).
I would like to know, who is allready there, (if any), before I`ll connect the flashchat. Thx

Maybe, but I'm not going to look in to it. Someone else can.

for me connecting to the flashchat takes a while (or two

). That`s because my net runs quite slowly. Each time I don`t know if there`s anyone in. Could you make at least some "brick" or something on the forum, showing if someone is there (ex: if there`s AT LEAST one person inside the flashcat, the brick is red, if there`s noone - it stays black). It could be in "Who`s online" info or somewhere else, I don`t know...

Sorry. Not something I'm willing to look into. Flashchat and phpBB are two completely unrelated pieces of software written by different people. Flashchat allows reading of usernames from phpBB but that's all I believe.
If someone wants to find a way of doing this, please do and I'll implement it, but I'm afraid I don't have the time to look into this myself.

yeah, that would be a bonus.. as I too simply avoid looking as I sometimes assume no one is there.. I sometimes see a few of you online but it doesn't say if you're in chat or not.
However, no having it confirmed that no one is in chat.. maybe less people will use it? because, instead of a happyaccident of two people checking at the same time.. they will both avoid it because they both know, no one is inside
*shrug*

True, usually chats happen because someone goes in, no one is there, then decides to stay in while they do other things. That means you usually catch someone, and that can be it for the evening, as more people come join leave etc
If everyone else is waiting for everyone to go into chat, then no one might!

I agree with you, if people see that the chat is empty, noone would enter it (why, it`s empty)! But othervise, sometimes a person is waiting on the flashchat to talk, but people don`t come at all, cause they think there`s noone as usual (sometimes I enter the flashchat in one window, and then run forum and watching, who`s there: a lot of people comes to the forum and go, but noone is coming to the flaschat to see if someone is inside- they think it`s probably empty). It would be sufficient if only one person stays on the flashchat online and waiting, and more and more people from the forum would join (if they want to!), to see what`s going on (or who`s on).
Sometimes I enter the chatroom for a second and disconnect if I dont see anyone. I`m sure a lot of people do the same. So it`s really big luck, if they meet in that short time.
BTW: is it also opened for the guests (non-registered)?

I mean a "mark" on the forum that shows, if the flashchat is empty/not empty.

if it`s impossible to do what I suggested above, we could make a new "sticky" topic on this "suggestions & maintance" or "news and chat" forums, where we could give a posts about our flashchat presence - for example: "today I`m waiting on the flaschat till 01:00" or "I`ll be there for 30 minutes [from a message time of course]". If someone is interested in talk, he could then pop in to the flashchat with certainty that it`s not empty.
Out-of-date (staled) posts could be deleted every week or month, etc.
It wouldn`t need any effort of transforming the forum, which I realise would be a lot of work (connecting a forum with flashchat etc.)
I`m writing about it because I see that flash is empty lately.

OK, OK, OK, I'll implement this, but only when I next upgrade the phpBB software and that won't be for a few weeks,

Well it is a sticky in the news forum for general chat, seems logical to just post there : ) But you've worn gambit doen, so well done!

Thanks for the moral support.
I was just looking at the upgrade process and can't for the life of me remember how I've done it in the past AND manged to upgrade all templates and mods.
I think I might have to start from scratch again and do a simple subSilver install, losing all the old templates. Bugger.

Noooooooooooo! Don't do it! It sounds like tons of work, when you were more invested in having fun creating the Codex!

Hmmm.... it's all coming back to me now. The templates part is one of those slow, methodical things that shouldn't be too bad.
The core engine can be treated quite simply. If any mods break as a result, I'll just have to re-add them.
Not sure when I'll get this done, but it'll be soon(ish).
And yes, the Flashchat "Who's online/" thing will be added too.

That's great to hear Gambit! Thanks a lot for implementing this!

Yes, I failed to implement any of this last year. I shall probably fail again this year unless someone can give me lots of money so I no longer have to work.
