I still don't quite understand why people try to reproduce original products, save as a learning experience. I mean, if you want to play the original, then play the original. I thought the whole point of reproducing something was to improve on it in some way.

Maybe he is planning to make an editor?

Then he should probably make an editor and not clone the game itself.

I agree that there is no point in doing a remake if there is nothing new in the package. Especially when the original EOB2 works just fine without any magic tricks..

Well its very early days yet. RTC cloned a great game, and its editor is fantastic.

Some people like playing the original DM and CSB through WinXP etc without having to muck around with emulators or play through DOS!
Plus you don't know where a project will go...I'm sure Paul S didn't imagine what would happen : )

Well, EOB2 runs perfectly in WinXP with just VDMSound. Don't know if it's possible (or relatively easy) to have sounds without any aid since they are handled quite differently in old DOS games compared to 'modern' Microsoft operating systems..
Yes, the project could go anywhere, but for now I'm just sceptical..

Paul S didn't imagine what would happen
The only reason I did it was that when I started the
project there was no way to play CSB. If I had a
machine like the one I am using and an ST emuator such
as the ones now available, I would never have started
such a tremendous task. RTC was just getting off the
ground but it was for DM and, IMHO, was too slow for
the machine I had at that time. Moreover, I was under
the delusion that DM and CSB were very different.
Imagine my surprise when someone played DM using my
CSBwin!
So I agree that making a clone of something that
works perfectly well is sorta silly. Except as a learning
or recreational experience. It would be better to
try to do something new like combine the best
features of several games. A compendium of DM,
EOB, Wizardry, Ultima, Might and Magic, etc.
But for a "Keep Busy" project, you can hardly
beat building a clone and letting it loose on the world.
Speaking of the world, my PocketPC version of DM is being
released by some gaming magazine in Japan on the
CD with one of their issues.

Hi all,
I'm the guilty one who is doing this remake. Why? Because I have fun doing it. Its really that easy.

But there are still some other reasons: A year ago I tried to play some classics with a PocketPC. With DosBox and a lot of time I managed to run EOB2 - but still without sound. It was not easy to get it running at all! So I started the programming...
My motivition is the gain of programming experience and the love for the classic original. The map files and event scripting is/will be completely open (simple text files), so an editor should be no real task - later.

Then don't let all the mean pessimists put you off : )
Good luck!

Glad you joined us.. it's projects like this that help keep this community alive.. despite the occasional nay sayer
as mentioned.. clones hava a habit of taking on a life of their own. A good many people make clones and as such we've seen a number here and also house forums for them specifically.. so it just goes to show they do well, so long as the creator sticks with the project.
There are a number that looked promising and then fell prey to "real life"..
cheers

and sometimes people would love to play again yet never have it or even an amiga or whatever else EOB is on, this is like another chance for those who wish to play it again...
...as well as those who have trouble running emulators.

Axel, I wish you luck with this, and look forward to playing and eventually editing one of the greatest games ever made.
