Hmm, haven't heard of that before - what version of DOSbox are you using?

I'm using the latest version (o.63), got sound but the arrow keys + pg up/dn do not work - they do when you just run the game without dosbox

Ug, just realised that the latest version of DOSbox is v0.65 and not 0.63 (how that happened is in the lap of the gods (they are laughing at this moment))however, I've tried 0.65 and still no joy - I've also tried disabling the keymapper in the dosbox config txt file (after all, if you run it without dosbox the keys work - don't they?) help!

I'd recommed using VDM sound.

thanx for that, but I've tried VDMS sound on default settings and I've got nothing - I can't be bothered to muck around with the settings in VDMS (because I don't know what I'm doing - if you've got any ideas on that one it would be quite helpful).BTW I've had a look at the bmp's for DM2.5 and it loox quite good...
I would rather run the thing in DOSbox anyway as it seems to work perfectly apart from the keyboard being a git!!!

Hmm, alot of people run DOSbox with no problems, so I can't tell what it could be (dion't use it myself, so sorry for the no additional help). I wonder if it's a problem with the latest versions? Maybe check the net to see i9f other users are complaining of lack of keyboard control...
Bote that if you use CSBwin it is basically the old CSB engine and it lpays DM.

If you've read the docs on the encyclopedia, DM used very primitive SB sound. Techincal stuff aside. It just might not be supported by DOSBOX or VDMSound

Well, I'm exhausted - I guess you can't have you're cake and eat it - at least in dosbox got sound and some playability - off the top of my head I reckon it's some kind of inturrupt problem - still if anyone can help me fiddle with dosbox settings to try then have a go...thanx

Well if you want the game to run well I suggest following:
Output=Surface
core=dynamic
cycles=6500
Scaler=normal2x (If you have a lot of RAM I recommend AdvMame2x)
It works very good with 486 era games on 2.4 GHz Athlon with 768 MB RAM.

thanx, but the laptop I' on has a 1.6 processor , I doubt whether it would rectify the kboard problem anyway...

Try a different approach then: Use partition magic or something alike to split of a small MS-DOS or Win98SE partition, add the mouse command line and - if existent - MS-DOS-sound-drivers and there you go.
I did this when I'd been first rediscovering DM, but later I ditched that setting because I prefer CSBWin and RTC much over original PC version.

Thanx for bringing this little conversation to a new zenith, but mucking about with that aspect (although I only have a slight inkling of what you're on about) is way above my head, if I bodly go where I've not been before I could do some SERIOUS damage. What I really think I'm after is something to do with the interrupts, maybe a change to the DOSBOX config file and the SB settings.
It might just be some 'quirk' with the laptop I'm using (Toshiba sattelite).
as I've not tried it on any other PC.
Qoutes r cool:

Ok, if you don't want to create alternate partitions, did you ever try CSBWin or RTC? If not, is there anything about CSBWin or RTC you dislike?

I had an ST AND an Amiga (those where the dayz!), I played DM and then when I got CHAOS (on the ST) I thought 'I've bin here before' I've played with STeem, and although I didnt rediscover CHAOS I notice that you need emulators (forgive my ignorance for CSBWin do you need an emulator for that?) I am not really very interested in all the mucking about with stuff that anyway.To sum it all up I'm only interested in th PC version of DM so that I can "spread the word" about the original (and I think best) game of all time.

CSBwin is a programme that has taken the atari ST csbwin engine and converted it for use on a PC - it is the emulator, if you like. It is the original CSB engine, which apart from a few minor thigns was the DM engine aswell. It has since been expanded to play DM, and also a host of custom dungoens. You can download it through the encyclopaedia

CSBWin is an exact transformation of the original Atari ST version to the PC. It is 100% identical. RTC is slightly different in details, but more comfortable to use. You don't need an emulator for either, just download the game and play! I understand your approach, you seem to be just as much of a purist as I am!

For that reason, I prefer playing CSBWin, because it is absolutely identical to the Atari ST version (though I have to admit I'd prefer the Amiga version for sounds). And I definitely agree to the best game of all time statement!
EDIT: Bah, Beo beat me to it once again...
