shields and the block command

I found that back row members employ the hit command
of a shield item without "can't reach" being displayed.
Just wondered, whether or not this message should appear
(for back row attacks and when facing the wrong direction)
Is that an (apparent) inconsistency or perfectly normal or
is it all the same?
Most likely it does not really matter, because shields seem
to be as useless as protective items as they are as a weapon
anyway.
Alas, I cannot remember how the originals handled shields.
Could be that champions were doing some minor amount of
damage (1 or 2) with "hit".
My champions start wearing them on their backs from now on
(1st field in the backpack inventory, I do not want to totally
dismiss them)
