Which set of DM2 grafics do like more?

So, even if the PC ones do have a larger colour palette, I find the less cartoony Amiga ones more appealing in style. How do other people feel about it?

Are there screenshots anywhere online where we can compare and contrast the differences?

I like bits and pieces of both so I can't vote!

All in all, I prefer the Amiga version.

It would appear that the Amiga graphics for DMII are more similar in style to the graphics found in the original games of Dungeon Master and Chaos Strikes Back.

For this reason alone I would prefer those, even though they are more... basic.

Unless of course the graphics for DM/SCB were re-drawn using the style of DMII.

I think the whole matter is linked to movement.
Dm2Graphics are more cartoonish and movement is in dm2 smoother, both of monsters and the party.
So the cartoon style somehow fits, too.
I just like the old style better, and to be honest I only ever played the
pc version, so maybe that influences me for voting for amiga!

I knew this one would be close because there are a lot of nostalgics here. I prefer the updated graphics myself. The cartoonish nature of DM2 adds a unique flavor to the game, further setting it apart from its predecessor. I can't say I'd like DM/CSB with the same style of graphics, but for DM2 it works really well.

I like the PC graphics, but the Amiga ones are scarier. And some are much cooler. I like the Amiga archer.

Interestingly, it was Interplay who told FTL they needed to update the graphics for the PC version, presumably because they simply looked too dated on other Platforms and everyone had just gotten hold of Doom...

Hhe, I have a great mental picture of that -- if I had half the artistic ability of Cows I'd attempt a rendering...

Doom killed the industry. First-person shooters rocked the planet after that. Bleh.

Actually, I think Wolfenstein was the first of those FPS games...it certainly came before Doom (you can access the first two levels of Wolfenstein in Doom 2).

doom was a real eye candy. I still remember playing it the first time -
no wait- I just saw it being played !

I had seen Wolfenstein 3D before doom , and it was, well, sillyfunny somehow at this time(especially the speech samples: mein leben!)
but the real breakthrough was with doom.486 did have more power than 386! nicer wall graphics for doom. Not that much pixelating style like wolvenstein 3d...
unfortunately this got off topic! ;)

now you can play Jdoom or Gdoom - powered versions of good old Doom, wchich are, IMHO, much better than Quake (I mean much playable) !
==========
for now, first option in poll wins 6 to 4; "classical DM style" (horray !!!) :D

Wolfenstein was the first, yes, but Doom was the one that sent the genre to the heights where it still looms. Actually, I am playing a lot of Doom the last days. Even after 12 years, it is still by far the best shooter ever created IMHO.

Oh, any hooray for Amiga graphics! ;)

Amiga graphics are really the most DM-ish. I like that FTL-feel which is in all DM games except in DM2-PC/Mac !

hey, I know a game, that is nearly 20 years and it`s still first better in it`s cattegory ! ;)
Doom wasn`t best only because was first: it`s because all other doom-like games were just duplicating its climate. it is still first-and-best in it`s category, just like DM :D

Just compare Doom to DukeNukem or DM to EOB! First sometimes MEANS the best

I don't necessarily agree with you Adamo. There are plenty of games that once were revolutionary, but simply got surpassed later on. I doubt many people would prefer Dune 2 to Starcraft, for example. I'd put it this way: sometimes, everything comes together just perfectly. There are a select few games where everything feels right: controls, atmosphere, style, level layout, and general feel. As with movies, there are only a few games that create this very special, almost magical feeling. Dungeon Master is one of them, as is Doom. There are other games I would classify similarly, but to a lesser extent; games like Super Mario World, Super Metroid, Turrican 2, Resident Evil 2, Final Fantasy 6 or Tomb Raider 1. However, DM and Doom are the two most magical games to me.

Amiga all the way! 8)
linflas wrote:yep, doom killed my amiga..
I played Doom quite hapily on my A1200 060, it even allowed me to jump & look up & down. I was even able to play Quake pretty well, Amiga TeamFortress rocked!
It was Half-Life that finally killed my Amiga! As soon as that came out I had to have a PC

Off-topic: I liked Duke3D way better than Doom for the game play, but I do think Doom had much better atmosphere.

Evenmoreofftopic: had that on me Amiga too, using a Mac emulator. Since there never was an 060 mac it ran faster than it did on the Real Thing 8)

back to the topic: would it be possible to replace SOME creatures from PC DM2 graphics set with their amiga equivalents in RTC version of DM2 ?
If there`s some way to extract creatures from Amiga version of DM2, they could be also added to RTC editor... We could make a mix of the coolest PV versions of some creatures and coolest Amiga versions of some other. What d`you think?

You can compare them here:
http://dmweb.free.fr/?q=node/782

Especially I like
1. Thorn Demon more,
2.Vortex are the same in the Encyclopaedia,
3. Glops are the same crap (but 1st version better IMHO),
4. Rocky: first version is better
5 and 6. Gigglers: a tragedy. Original giggs from DM/CSB are still best
7. worm - definitely first version (similar to original ones)
8. Spectre - 1st version is IMHO more scary
9. Trees - second is better
10. Dragoth - definitely first, even with that blue colour
11. Minions - hmmm... first..
12. Bats - 1st, Amiga version definitely better
13. Archer - Amiga version at least 1000 times better
14 and 15. Vexirk kings and Dark Vexirks - no big differences, besides both versions are good !
15. Merchant - both version are creepy :(
16. Mummies - hmmm... this time I choose PC version, but Amiga ones is also good here.
(minions, minions...)
17. flame - 1st !!!!!
18. digger worm - first !
19. skeleton - again no big differences, but less-colorfull style looks better.
20. Axemans - as above
21. Ghost - as above
22. Wolfs - both are tragic, Hellhound from CSB was much better IMHO
23. Dru Tan - I don`t know wchich is worst...

Ok, that`s my opinion about that graphic sets.

RTC is originally Amiga inspired... and all PC monsters are really crappy imho. i would change all monsters to their Amiga version but i would keep the PC interface/items/portraits.

Says who?

At the risk of (re)starting the original flame war; given that I have an ST and never seen an Amiga let alone been inspired by one I'd say that it's actually quite the opposite!
