I figure there are more than a few French speakers here so I'll post it...
I have a question about the phrase "ça ne tient pas trop la route." Is it an idiom for something? My scant knowledge of French tells me, and Babelfish confirms, that it means something like "It does not hold to the route." Is this an idiom for something not being accurate, not fitting, or, what?

Yes, the litteral meaning would be for a vehicle, like a car, which is not very stable on road.
This expression is also used for anything (even abstract) that does not look very robust, stable, efficient.
