Well, go on then - how do
you say it?

Can't do the poll - Most non-English-speakers wouldn't pronounce it like an english "e" anyway, no matter whether short or long.

I've always pronounced it "NAY-ta".

nee-ta for me, like the Greek letter Beta - though I have heard this pronounced bay-ta, a la RK.

Nay-ta or neh-ta, like R.K. and Trantor. Rhymes with beta or feta cheese.
Edit: O.K. Not like Trantor. I pronounce it nay-ta like R.K.

I pronounce "Beta" the same too - "bee-tuh"...what about the "Ceti" in "Tau Ceti" (the name of a star)? I say it as "SEE-ty" but I've heard it pronounced as "SET-ee" on telly...but I think that was by Americans though so mayby they pronounce it differently *looks in Soph's direction*.

It's "set-ee".

settee too, like the thing you sit on
Posted: Mon Aug 14, 2006 5:51 pm

I pronounce it "setty".
Is your SEE-ty with a "tee" or a "tie" sounding ty?
Isn't language fun?

Posted: Mon Aug 14, 2006 6:07 pm
by Ameena
It's "ty" as in "tye"/"tie". I think it's 'cause that's how my dad says it so that's how I say it, 'cause it's in "Frontier Elite II", a game we had on the Atari.

yes yes yes, but how would you pronounce "Pronoiai Allagion", who were ancient Byzantine heavy horsemen!
Posted: Mon Aug 14, 2006 9:50 pm
by beowuuf
If you are standing around trying to pronounce it, I assume you will be dead from ancient byzantine spears pretty soon anyway so your answer would be moot.

Whilst we're on the subject of pronunciation, I've been playing a superb board game called "Caylus" with some fellow game geeks recently and we're not too sure how to say it.
The Klingon version comes to mind first (KAY-LUSS) but as it is a French town I would have thought it was more likely to be SAY-LOO or KAY-LOO... or KAY-MOO ?

Well, seeing that word, I read it as "KAY-lus"
