There isn't one, you can only cast spellshield via the teowand from level 4
I forget if the physical shield will also give you any amount of protection

Nope, just fire there is still a physical/magical component to lightnigh bolts. Sure I tested a trap of mine using lightning bolts and needed to have a teowand handy.
I gues someone could test it
No idea how RTC handles it.....

is there no way of casting a "spell shield" like the one the teowand creates?
I take it not?

As I said before, you can only cast the spellshield using the teowand
If you are creatign a custom dungeon, the both CBSwin and RTC have any item to cast the effect, and with RTC you could code it to a spell

That one protects against fireballs. If you cast it enough times, you can make your party invulnerable to low level fireballs. Handy when fighting creatures that cast fireballs.
Good armour seems to protect against lighting bolts but not a great deal, the Teowand's Spellshield is best.

In original FTL-DM you can't protect against lightning except by the Theowand, although according to the manual, the YaBro-potion is supposed to do that - but the original FTL-DM YaBro-potion only protects against physical attacks. George has corrected this bug for RTC though, so YaIr creates a spell shield, albeit only for 1 character per potion and with a very unpleasantly short duration that makes it difficult to profit from the spellshield at all.

Since when does ya ir create a spellshield???
It's the noirmal shield spell ... always has been ...

Beo: No, not YaIr. YaIr always and ever only has been creating a physical shield for the party, in all versions known to me. YaIr works as usual, in RTC as well as in FTL. Only the YaBro-potion is different in RTC from FTL, which is correct in a way, since the original FTL-DM manual states that the YaBro-potion is supposed to create a spellshield (I always considered the state YaBro had been programmed initially by FTL to be an unintentional bug, and I'm glad that George has fixed it).

I read it that the opposite had happened
Where does the manual say des-bro creates a spellshield?

ok, could be level four!

with all the worms, it's more or less a balanced item.. nevertheless the best magic item, for a while!
( lv 8/lv12)(snakestaff and staff of manar )
there are 3 types of spell:
teowand's spellshield:
light blue , spaced border around champion portrait
fireshield spell:
green border or yellow??
physical shield etc..
dark blue border
there was a discussion on that some time ago..

Beo: I've doublechecked, took me a while to find it since it is very long ago since I had read that bit, but at last I found it: It is in the Adventurer's Manual published by FTL games, page 41: "Spell shield potion - This potion creates a shield against spells. ... When this spell is in effect, a dashed light-blue line will surround your champions' boxes at the top of the screen."
Aside from that I find this quite logical - who would shield a character by potions in melee if there is a spell that can be cast in the middle of combat and that will shield the entire party? So all in all I think RTC is handling shields best.
Zoooom: Firseshield is green, physical shield dark blue and spellshield light blue in all versions known to me.

Anyone else think that lightning bolt was the biggest waste of time ever as a spell?
In almost all cases it would only hit one of the monsters when there's a group of them, it cost way more to cast than a standard fireball, and it didn't go BOOOOOM when cast with mon power...
Plus for a given level it required more skill to cast, for example my lo master wizards struggled with mon lightning compared to the laughable easy mon fireball.

Simon: Generally you are theoretically right, but you forget species' and characters' specific resistance: There are monsters (and characters) who have a much higher anti-fire than anti-magic. Shoot lightning at these and fireballs against everyone else. If you are interested in actual figures, check the Encyclopaedia.

Rats, rusters, scorpions seem to be an example of wasting so much firepower to take them out...don't know if their anti-magic is weak though...
