Importing Monsters

I have searched through several forums, tried importing monsters individually, tryng through clicking a dungeon, editor comes with dungeon master java always says unable to import, even does so with items. I tried to import even default things that came with game and still unable to create custom monsters. If i load up other peoples maps i am unable to see their monsters as well, the monsters are in the correct file and are in gif format and are of correct size. Any suggestions? Please help.
