Level 4 Hit and Run Problem?

Hi, I just started playing DM, the original version thats packed in RTC. On level 4 there is a puzzle at the start thats really giving me a hard time.

I come up to a button that teleports me in front of a door 2 blocks down the hall. I need to side step through the door it seems but I can't do it fast enough. I even dropped ALL my equipment to help me go faster.

Also is there a way to side step other than clicking the button onthe screen? When I push left and right on my arrow pads it turns left and right rather than strafing.

Thanks for the help!

Yes - only the forward/backward/turn arrows map to the cursor keys ont he keboard, but all six of the arrow keys map to the lower half of the numpad - try that and I think you'll find it works ;).
You can also change the keys in the Config file, but those are the RTC defaults.

OK - cool. I will try it when I get home. Do I need to dump all my gear to do this?

Lol no - I don't imagine you would have anyone in the yellow by Level 4 anyway, surely? I normally take a slight bonk on the head from the door as I nip through and I only ever have my whole party in the grey, weight-wise, so if anyone's in the yellow I dunno if you'd make it through.

As long as the weight is displayed in grey for every character, everything will be fine. Also, I think it is impossible to not get hit by the door - but with keyboard sidestepping, it shouldn't be a problem.

Nah, I can get under it without been bonked! ;-)

I will probably just be the key issue, sort it out so you can sidestep and it will all be good

I played that part a while ago with just Tiggy and she was in the red. To my surprise she didn't take a hit from the door. So I guess it's not that hard after all. This was with PC DM and DOSBox 0.65..

Well, at least in RTC even by pressing the button by mouse and immediately pressing your sidestep key twice you can't get through without getting a hit on your characters' heads, but at least you're on the other side of the door.

There are a couple of other places where you have to be fast, let alone any combat, so anyone really playing this game will do movement by keyboard only (I also do all spells by keyboard - with practice you can get an amazing firing or shielding speed impossible to achieve by clicking runes) and use the mouse for weapon usage, throwing stuff, picking up stuff and operating wall items.

Wieght influence knows only 3 states: Unencumbered load is displayed by light grey load figures, encumbered by yellow load figures, and heavily overloaded by red load figures below a characters inventory.

Speed is determined by the slowest party member as the limiting factor. If one of your characters is loaded yellow, all the party will move like being encumbered, if one of them is heavily overloaded, all the party will move like being heavily overloaded. Stamina drain by load of course remains individual.

Also, boots of speed will only show effect if all the party is equipped with them, so you can run very fast through half the game if you play it with only one character, but if you prefer a full 4 character party (like I do), you need to find all 4 well hidden pairs to make them become really useful, and thus will only really profit from them in the last part of the game, provided that you find them in the first place.

Ok thanks for the info Lunever- useful stuff.

I had tried the num pad before and thought it didn't let me do side stepping but then when I tried again I realized I needed to put numlock on. Thanks! Now I can progress on my quest! If I ever get some free time...

Numlock or not - most of the time I play on a laptop without a numpad, but lucky us RTC config.txt allows to to remap the key configuration pretty easily. For example I use SXADYC fo movement, F1-4 for character inventory, F5 for inventory cycle, QWER for casting character, 1234546 for spell runes, 7 for delete rune, and TAB for cast preared spell.

Also, RTC allows for a couple of other details to be determined by the config.txt specifications. Beware that the config.txt is delineated by TAB, not by Space or similar. Best you just overwrite keys and other stuff written there, and leave the rest as it is.

Is your keyboard differnt on that laptop? SXADYC doesn't look convenient to me on the standard layout.

Lunever is from Germany, and on German keyboards, the Y and the Z have switched places. So for you, it would be Z instead of Y.
