Watching yesterday's Dr. Who (set in 1930s New York) I couldn't help wondering if the pig-men were a nod to the LAPD cops in Duke Nukem 3D... ?

I thought it was a nod to the low life in Alaistair Reynolds "Chasm City".
But pig men are fairly generic creatures and have figured in other works, so it could be influenced by lots of things or even nothing and they thought they were being original....

Haven't they been in Dr Who before? They've been in the new series before, but I mean way back in the old series already?

I love Reynolds work. New age Hard Sci Fi. Sometimes the dialogue and setting is a little flabby but great nevertheless. Start with the first, Revelaiton Space, and go through them in order.
