Ra Door

since I really can't decide and only a couple people have commented on it so far in the other thread I figured I'd put it in a place more people might notice.
I've done 4 examples and I'm just really looking for a style for the effect that will reference the old a bit but give it a new look which shows the power of the door. That it's raw power behind preventing your entrance. I'm still designing the door frame at the moment, but if you could vote on which you think is the best I'll go with that
1.
Ra Door 1
2.
Ra Door 2
3.
Ra Door 3
4.
Ra Door 4
thanks for the help

Hmm, number two seems closer to the original, but more importantly gives the impression of a barrier instead of some spooky stuff that you can't walk through
However, for look I really like number one, so I would be prepared to change my vote if the doorframe somehow made it look more 'solid' an obstruction

Hm... hmmmm.... hmmmmmmm... I voted for two - it doesn't look so nice or "cool", but it really gave me a feeling of an energy barrier, whereas the rest might look better but it looks like a mist (1) or sunshine (3) or sunshine + mist (4).
I like number three too - but it misses something - maybe sounds would help it, or the colours should be more contrasting, I don't know.

Exactly. If there were some way to combine the feel of 2 as a barrier into 1 that would be perfect!
I think it's solidity, for want of a better word - i think the pattern needs a period where it becomes less translucent and a very definite colour in certain areas as if the power condenses in certain spots. Maybe that would make it feel solid.

Hey, nice stuff. I like 1 and 4, probbaly 4 best.
Is this for RTC? You won't get so smooth anim in RTC (it only supports 6 FPS) so you'll have to compromise a bit there. Not sure how DSB handles this kind of thing.

It was for entombed, wasn't it?

it is indeed for Entombed. the exact problem I have with this is trying to have it look like a barrier.. I could combine 1 with 2 and we would end up with something more like 4 which is a combination of 1 and 3. but it may more look like contained fire/smoke?

if you take a closer look at number 1, there is a line at the bottom.
I think no1 would work as a barrier if these lines would be left, upper and right side, too.
So the fire would billow a bit over these lines (rectangles in 3d space/=doorframe?)
and this will give a nice effect imo---------because you need confines/dedicated area for the fire.
as a means of comparison(size 3d-location etc pp)
still vote for number2(probably bcs of zo door resemblance!?).Though all could be used..3 and maybe4 too would need a more sudden
change or flush flash colour change. don“t know how to describe it. Very smooth going and slow mo

I personally like #2 also. It's got the most "barrier like" quality to it.

DSB animations can run at up to 35 FPS.

i voted 4, nicest one, but maybe you could combine it with 2 for the barrier effect, which finally means that the best one is a combination of all !

for all those who voted for 2 but were unsure.. I give you.. by popular request......... RA DOOR NUMBER 5!!
http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v291/ ... adoor5.flv
we've got 6 votes for ra door 2 making it the most likley.. so I need at least 6 to say they like this new version better or I go with number2

I'd still prefer number two.
You know... it all depends on what the door should represent. I mean - the other alternatives are very very nice, but if it is supposed to be sort of "energy barrier" (as you suggested, and as was the original DM door), the number two is the best, I think. As I wrote before, the rest looks either as dust in sunshine, or some clouds, or - the last (number 5) looks... like... clouds behind an oily water... I don't know... sorry for that, I mean - as I said, it's very very nice, it's a very very good work, but it doesn't feel like an energy barrier.
Although, the door frame and sounds are vital for us to decide which one is the best. Sounds can change the whole atmosphere and feeling.
Keep doing this great job!

Nope....Number 2. It just looks like it would
repel you backwards if you attempted to
enter. I see no advantage to having a door
that looks as if it has multiple layers.
Number 2 looks like a homogeneous energy
field.

oh, as a side note.. the latest video has green lines which should not be in the video. it's the geometry I placed the textures on.. just ignore the green lines..

I like 5, I think there is nothing wrong with the idea of a huge amount of power, I like that there is a surface (like water) so you know it is a solid barrier.
I think I would go with number 6 above number five
And I'd watch the vocal voting as opposed to the clicking voting. You got two verbal votes for two alone to start with, yet two people had already voted for four and only one had actually voted for two!

Six people (55 %) have voted for number two! Or I'm blind as a mole.

to start with though, it was 1-2 yet 2-0 going by the vocal minority

I'm going to almost match Wuffy's response here with a "Wooooo..."

.

And if we combine all three responses like some voltron rip-off, we get:
"Wow! Woooooooooooo...ooooooooh! Now that's something!"

Maybe I'm dumb, but this looks more like a portal to me than a barrier. If I saw it in a dungeon I'd certainly to try to walk through it. Maybe it's because it reminds me of the Stargate erm... stargates.
Upon reflection, I think what gives me this impression is that you cannot see what is beyond the door, so it looks like a mirror you can enter to travel somewhere else. I think if I could see the room beyond I'd get the barrier feel.

Doh! You're probably right!
EDIT: You're right in your analysis of the portal, not in being dumb.

indeed, but as it was a quick test, I didn't bother to set up an entire scene behind it until I was happy with the movement/look.
