If anyone is around, please can you go to this site and tell me what you see? It will either be a site with a big pink header area or a Netbenefit holding page. Thanks.

It said Netbenefit, so I guess it was the holding page, grey header with orange.

Thanks guys. Could I possibly ask you to check again in a few hours too? Thanks.

Love the Christmas avatar TRego. My skelly joined the fun but his hat is a bit small.

OK, no need to keep checking. I've discovered that the change over actually wasn't done :-( Someone hasn't done their job properly and now I'm going to be the one who gets it in the neck next week when the site launch is delayed.

"If you want something done properly, kill Baldrick before you start."

AAAAAAAAARGHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! Oh, wrong thread....

I'm getting the Netbenefit page too, in case you still wanted to know (seeing as it looks like it's been about six hours since the last post to this thread...).

Thanks, but don't worry, see my previous post. The muppets who were supposed to have switched things over were clearly down the pub early on Friday. That doesn't help my deadline, does it? Useless feckers.

Being dependent on other people doing their job properly, and being constantly let down, is making me want to give up web development all together. It's just not worth the bloody hassle any more.

Yeah, I saw that earlier this week. Luckily I haven't had any clients quite that bad, but a few come close!

This site is good too. I've submitted some of my own horror stories too, see if you can guess which ones are mine! :)

FOR FECK'S SAKE! IS EVERYONE BLOODY USELESS!?

I have to work all day today on a DIFFERENT client's website. They set me up a test server. So I try to login just now and get this "Oops! This link appears to be broken." The idiot didn't even test it before sending through.

AAAAAARGH. I have HAD IT with these muppet-fisting clients on this muppet-fisting plane!

Holy hand-grenades, I need to go and get a full time job. I haven't found ONE single client yet* who knows what the hell they are doing. At least in a full time job I can concentrate on what I'm good at and be shielded from idiocy like this.

*Actually, that's not true, but it sounds good in a rant :)

I both laughed at this, and yet think it's a valid career choice for you Gambit :)

I know it's been a few year, but dude, come on, you can't have forgotten so quickly what it's like working a full time job, have you?

Funny timing by the way, a webcomic was doing this for a few days. Basically, what if 'Superman' had to take on webdesign as his day job.

Honestly. Where I work over 50% of my time has been shielded from the client and I have retained most of my sanity because of it. It's truly wonderful to do what I like and not have to divine clients requirements. I wouldn't put it down as the reason for changing jobs though. I'd just put an extra 20% on my estimations for when dealing with incompetence.

Maybe the caveat is work for a bigger company so you get shielded more from customer idiocy, but don't make it too big or else you will just be working for 'internal customers' whom are also idiots.

Also, anyone driving slower than you is a moron and anyone driving faster than you is an asshole :D

I think these last two projects have also helped me realise that if I continue to freelance, I need to stop offering a full service and sub-contract out the technical stuff to someone else. I know enough to be dangerous, but I'm starting to get involved in bigger projects where my knowledge is more limited and I have to spend far too long learning new stuff.

It's a good learning experience and a wake up call. I've been feeling like this for a while and these two projects have certainly reinforced my thinking that I need to just focus on what I'm best at: design and front-end work ONLY.

Ah ha. So you've have had to work with databases in this one, create relationships between entities on the web forms and the like? Or are you installing modules, or creating profiles in apache or IIS? All that I can say is that I like that stuff but I *must* at least gain an appreciation in creating user interfaces and web site design. All that I can say is the front-end is the most important!

Put it this way: I'm not a programmer and I've had to create a complex relational website which includes some stand alone complex forms ..... using Wordpress!

FFS! Wordpress does not a website make. It told them two things in the very first meeting:

1) I don't recommend Wordpress for this project, it's unsuitable.
2) DO NOT USE FASTHOSTS to host this site, or by the end of the project someone will be murdered

Now, I hate to be the guy that said "I told you so".........

full time job
It's mostly the same there anyway: you work hard. Then some manager comes along and proofs it all to be wrong using a POWERPOINT presentation (*). It may well be something you've been working on for years. Now how does that feel. However: you get constantly payed.

(*)
Yep. It's true. You've done it wrong all the time. I've proofen it. In POWERPOINT. You were not invited as they came to judgment, and if you were, all you could have done anyway is sitting in a corner with a half-opened mouth not believing what is going on. And if addressed what you're 'thinking about it', all you could possible do is saying something like: "ghargl".
